2BARN LOMMEL-KATTENBOSBRUEGEL AND THE COMPOSED LANDSCAPE The World of Bruegel examines several works of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. After your visit, you will have a new appreciation for his work. The common man and daily life: that was Bruegel’s focus, and that is the focus of this exhibition.

People and their everyday lives, their customs and habits, the contents of their homes, gardens and kitchens, household utensils, plants and animals… these are the kinds of things that the Open-Air Museum Bokrijk collects and studies, and the kinds of things that Bruegel showed in his 16th-century paintings.

The similarities don’t end there. Bruegel was an exceptional landscape painter. Just as the Bokrijk Museum is carefully composed, so Bruegel assembled diverse elements in his landscapes.

That’s why Bruegel belongs here in Bokrijk. His scenes and stories continue to fascinate us. They hold a mirror to the world today and make us think.

Here, we will investigate the following masterpieces: the series of paintings called The Months, the prints The Poor Kitchen and The Rich Kitchen, and the encyclopaedic painting The Battle between Carnival and Lent.

3 PLAY BARN (LONGITUDINAL BARN MOL-ZELM)BRUEGEL AND THE CHILDREN’S GAMESAs Pieter Bruegel the Elder knew all too well, people need to access their playful, creative side as an escape from everyday life. He created a kind of visual encyclopaedia of games in his painting “Children’s Games.” It’s full of scampering children illustrating all kinds of amusements. Up close, you’ll see more than 80 games played both then and now. Games like leapfrog and marbles are easy to recognise. But who still knows how to play “King of the Hill?” Take a look and have a go with your friends and family.

1HOUSE WORTEL

START BRUEGEL GAMEPieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1526/28-1569) designed his

paintings as visual puzzles for people to look at together. Viewers can discover all kinds of stories and meanings in them. As conversation pieces, they also lead to discussions. And through his compositions, Bruegel comments on current

events, as well as holds up a mirror to his viewers.

We invite you to play a game using one of his paintings, The Battle between Carnival and Lent. It’s teeming with little scenes, objects and figures… Want to play along?

In the Bruegel Game, you search for lost objects from the painting that are hidden throughout Bokrijk. They are the keys to the stories that Bruegel depicts. Collect the objects you find on your virtual hat: after all, Bruegel was known for the remarkable head dresses he painted. Is yours the prettiest hat? Or the

funniest?

• You can pick up a jester bracelet in the info centre next door. It’s linked to your personal hat and collects all the information that you find along the way.

• Look for ten hidden object-crystals along the Bruegel route. Found one? Scan the jester to collect the object. Try it out now with the crystal in the middle of this room!

• Scan the jester to log in on your virtual mirror. Collect objects on your hat, unlock hat-games and explore the stories behind the objects. Learn more in the instructions on the screen.

• Which Bruegel character do you like the most?Choose your personal hat by following the red pipes. This will be your hat for the whole route.

Will you win the price for the prettiest and wittiest hat? At the end of the game, share

your hat on Instagram with the hashtags #bruegelgame #bokrijk for a shot at the Grand Prize: a weekend in Vienna, including a

visit to the real Bruegel paintings in the Kunsthistorisches Museum!

6 OIL-PRESSING MILL ELLIKOM

THE BIRTHPLACE OF BRUEGEL?Oil was pressed from rape seeds and flax seeds in this mill, which comes from an historic group of mills in the Abeek Valley in Ellikom (Oudsbergen).

A lane linked the mill with the Stork’s Nest farm in Great Brogel, part of the city of Peer. Does Bruegel’s name refer to his possible birthplace in Brogel? Up until today, Bruegel’s actual birthplace remains a well-kept secret.

Jozef Weyns, the first curator of Bokrijk, had a thing for Pieter Bruegel the Elder. In the Kempen section of the museum, he sought to create an “oldfashioned village” in a Bruegelian landscape, including farmhouses,

barns, windmills, a smithy and a church. This oil mill could have come from a drawing by Bruegel, and fits within the intended Bruegel scene.

7 INTERSECTION HERENTHOUT

THE GOLDEN MEANIn the foreground of Bruegel’s painting The Battle between Carnival and Lent, a fat man representing Carnival sits on top of a barrel, and a skinny woman

representing Lent sits on a three-legged stool. Bruegel makes fun of extreme behaviour: the gluttony of Carnival and the stinginess of Lent.

In the centre of the painting, a couple follows a jester, who shows the way with a lit torch. Are they on the enlightened path? The face of the woman is hidden; her lantern is dark…

Which direction do you choose? Left towards the dissolute life? Or right towards the religious path? Or the golden middle way?

4 BRUEGELHOEVE VORSELAARBRUEGEL AND BOKRIJKThe link between Bruegel and Bokrijk is more obvious than you might think. For Jozef Weyns, the museum’s first curator, the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder was an important source of inspiration.

It’s telling that, before its opening in 1958, he wanted to call the museum “Bruegelhome.” Weyns was also influenced by Bruegel’s work for the arrangement and furnishing of the buildings. He augmented this farm from Vorselaar with elements from two other farms so that the finished building resembled the typical “Bruegelian farm” as closely as possible. This was a farm that Bruegel painted several times, including in The Village Kermis and The Parable of the Blind.

For the 400th anniversary of Bruegel’s death in 1969, the building was actually renamed the “Bruegel Farm.” For Weyns, the anniversary provided an opportunity to introduce other Bruegel elements into the museum. He based the interior decoration of the Bruegel farm on The Poor Kitchen, a famous print by Pieter Bruegel.

He also published the four-volume classic, Volkshuisraad in Vlaanderen (Common Household Implements in Flanders): an inventory of historic tools and utensils with extensive descriptions and his original drawings. For this work, Weyns studied the paintings and prints of the Old Masters, including Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

5 MOL-MILLEGEM POST MILL BRUEGELIAN SCENES Just as the Open-Air Museum was carefully built from different parts, Pieter Bruegel’s landscapes were assembled from various elements. Some of Bruegel’s drawings and paintings bear a striking resemblance to things you see here in Bokrijk: historic farms, barns, windmills, gardens, the “Bruegel farm,” etc….

The painter often used a high vantage point so that you, as the viewer, look down on the landscape and off into the distance. Just like Bruegel, this windmill offers you a viewpoint over the landscape. From the grain attic, you can look out over the grounds of Bokrijk as they unfold before you like a Bruegelian landscape.

8 THE WOODSBRUEGEL’S WILD MAN

In Bruegel’s time, the woods were the domain of robbers, freebooters and outcasts… and of the wild man. He symbolizes man’s unconscious and

primitive urges-everything that falls outside of civilised norms.

This opposition between civilised and uncivilised, culture and nature, is the theme of the story of Valentine and Orson, twin brothers who are separated shortly after birth. Valentine grows up at court, while Orson is raised by a she-bear in the woods. When they

meet again later, Valentine tames the wild man. Bruegel depicts this tale in his painting The Battle between Carnival and Lent. In the 16th century, it was a popular play performed on Shrove Tuesday.

Enter the hut of the modern wild man and step into the unknown!

9 WESTMEERBEEK CHAPEL

BRUEGEL AND RELIGIONIn Bruegel’s time, people’s lives were shaped by belief in the

afterlife. Whatever you sowed here on earth, you would reap in heaven. People lived by the Christian calendar, more so than today.

Bruegel lived in a tumultuous period, when religious questions were of burning importance and the Catholic Church was under attack.

In our time, religion plays a less important role for many people. We often seek other ways to give meaning to our lives. Where do you find meaning in your life?

10 HOOGSTADE COURTYARDTHE SQUARE OF THE SENSESWelcome to the Square of the Senses! In Bruegel’s time, public squares were popular places for spectacles. That’s where local chambers of rhetoric put on plays during festivities. Bruegel’s famous painting The Battle between Carnival and Lent shows a town square teeming with people celebrating.

Just like the rhetoricians of the 16th century, the actors and musicians of theatre company Laika and Bokrijk Living History perform a play in our square: Bravo! Mister Bruegel. They bring The Battle between Carnival and Lent back to life. This spectacle is full of characters showing people as they still are today: dancing, drinking, eating, playing, flirting, complaining, teasing… all too familiar. With all their faults and virtues, just as Bruegel depicted them.

From July 11th to September 1st 2019 - start at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM (+/- 45 min). Saturday and Sunday: extra play at 4:00 PM (Dutch spoken - understandable for not native speakers).

Laika, theatre of the senses, also lets you literally taste Bruegel. On Sundays, public holidays and during the Summer, you can come here for a sip of ‘Kleyn Bier‘ and a piece of ‘Paradise waffle’, both created by Laika and inspired by 16th-century ingredients. Let yourself be immersed in the ‘Diorama of the Senses’ in the Mikke from Lo, where sounds, bits of music and smells draw you into Bruegel’s painting!

11THE BARN FROM ZUIENKERKETHE WORLD OF BRUEGEL. A MIRROR ON TODAYHere, in this impressive barn from Zuienkerke, your tour ends with Bruegel’s painting The Battle between Carnival and Lent. It’s an encyclopaedia of daily life in Bruegel’s time: numerous objects, buildings, customs, celebrations and rituals unfold before your eyes. The painting is teeming with details, constructed like a puzzle where you keep finding more pieces. The closer you look, the more connections you make.

Bruegel sees mankind as the measure of all things. He was a master observer who could capture the different personalities and little quirks of his characters in paint. He holds a mirror up to the viewer in a humorous way, and comments on our foibles.

Now you can be both a participant and an observer in Bruegel’s world via Battle between Carnival and Lent. Explore our marvellous collection of 16th-century objects that appear to have leapt right off the painting. The viewing cabinets reveal the symbolism, iconography and hidden stories behind the painting.

In the virtual mirrors, you can dress up your hat with collected objects from the game. Finally, a modern interpretation will show you how relevant Bruegel’s work remains today.

TASTING THE FLAVOURS OF BRUEGEL

When you hear the name Bruegel, does it immediately bring Bruegelian buffets and rice pudding to mind? In Bruegel’s time, there were actually a

lot of other dishes on the menu. The Open-Air Museum’s catering outlets offer you the opportunity to taste ‘Ei in ‘t groen’ (Egg in the green), a barley risotto, ‘Kleyn bier’ or sour dough waffles, all inspired by the daily ingredients used in Bruegel’s time.

Also try Wildeman, the latest Bokrijk beer. This dark beer (9%) was commissioned by Bokrijk and it was conceived and brewed by Brouwerij Boon from Lembeek, based on age-old and taste-defining traditions. It is for sale in

our catering outlets and the museum shops.

THE BRUEGEL SHOPYou should definitely visit the Bruegel Shop at the end of the Bruegel Trail. You will find a range of beautiful and original Bruegel souvenirs there.

The shop also sells the book titled ‘Conversation pieces - The world of Bruegel’. This edition, published by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and the Bokrijk Open-Air Museum, focusses closely on the numerous objects that Bruegel depicted in the painting titled ‘The battle between Carnival and Lent’, but does this from a contemporary viewpoint. Available in Dutch and English.
