Park Maintenance A new master valve and flow sensor were installed in Woodlawn Cemetery in March by Irrigation Technicians Troy Lauritson and Gerardo Reynoso. The flow sensor will be used to detect breaks in the system, track water usage, and detect when flow is too high or too low. Sustainable irrigation features such as these are essential to reducing water usage in the city’s public spaces.

Restoration of walking paths in Douglas Park became necessary after the heavy rains of this past winter. Park Maintenance Crew Leader Ruben Molina, Equipment Operator Gumersindo Diaz and Groundskeeper James Welch (pictured below) backfilled, graded and compacted new decomposed granite along the paths, restoring safety for park patrons.

Two planter beds near the Ocean Avenue/Wilshire Boulevard intersection in Palisades Park were refurbished in March by Groundskeepers Baruc Alvarez, Juan Martinez and David Nunez. Some of the existing plants were overgrown, and others were dead or missing completely. Staff removed all old plants and replaced them with 130 drought-tolerant Cistus hybridus (White Rockrose) shrubs. A plant protection zone was installed around the area.
