FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Labyrinth Method Lunatics AND Cherish on Impulse from Sage Community School Advance to Destination Imagination's Global Finals, the Largest Celebration of Creativity in the World CHILOQUIN, OREGON, April 19, 2018 – It’s official! Sage Community School is sending two of the eleven Oregon teams to compete in Destination Imagination’s Global Finals. After achieving first place in their division for creativity, teamwork and innovation in regional and state academic tournaments, the Labyrinth Method Lunatics from Sage Community School received their invitation on April 7, 2018 to compete in Destination Imagination's Global Finals, the world’s largest celebration of student creativity, to be held May 23-26 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Sage Community School’s second team, Cherish on Impulse, achieved second place in their division and were chosen in a national lottery on April 19, 2018 to also attend Global Finals. The Labyrinth Method Lunatics will compete with other teams in the Maze Craze, and Cherish on Impulse will compete with other teams in the Treasure! Challenge. These are two of seven, open-ended Challenges that require students to apply science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, in addition to their talents in improvisation, theater arts, writing, project management, communication, innovation, teamwork, community service and social entrepreneurship. “This is a wonderful opportunity and the first time that Sage Community School has the opportunity to send a team to Global Finals after all these years,” said Sage Community School Director, Anna Fowler. “It is such a tremendous honor for any school to be able to send a team to Global Finals, but for a small rural school like ours with an enrollment of 60-70 students to have two teams chosen for Global Finals, is a testament to the work ethic of these kids, the dedication of team managers Donna King and Terra Whitlock, and the fantastic support of their families. We are actively trying to raise the needed funds and anyone wanting to donate please look for links at our website http://www.SageCommunitySchool.org,” Both teams must raise a combined total of $20,000. Cherish on Impulse’s team members include Summer Buckingham (10), Sydney Fowler (12), Zoe Johnson (12), and Chris Lo (12). The Labyrinth Method Lunatics team members include Rhiannon Burkhart (11), Willow Daniels (11), Kaitlynn Milano (10) and Caleb Swanson-Utley (11). Sage Community School has sponsored teams for their Destination Imagination After-School club for the past 7 years. This year, Sage received a grant from Klamath County Cultural Coalition for both teams to attend the regional and state affiliate tournaments. "Destination Imagination GLOBALS! The Olympics of Creative Minds!” said Donna King, Team Manager and 5/6 grade teacher at Sage. “We are thrilled to be a part of this rare opportunity to represent the State of Oregon, U.S.A. To see my students being recognized and praised globally is not only rewarding for them, but for me as well! Watch out world, here comes Sage Community School!" “It is such a joy watching these students challenge themselves,” said Terra Whitlock, Team Manager and 6/7/8 grade teacher at Sage. “They’re learning so many valuable lessons about collaboration and creativity. I’m really proud and so excited to take them to Global Finals!” Destination Imagination (DI) has had a positive impact on more than two million students who have taken part in its acclaimed academic program. This year, more than 150,000 students have participated in tournaments throughout the U.S., as well as 30 countries, in hopes of earning a spot at the Global Finals competition in May. “Going to Global Finals means a lot because there are eleven teams from Oregon and two of them are from Sage,” shared Summer Buckingham. “My sisters and I have always been involved in DI. They have wanted to go, but now I get to go.” “It’s always been my dream to go to global finals and finally I can,” said Sydney Fowler. I’m so excited to represent Sage at Global Finals.” The Labyrinth Method Lunatics and Cherish on Impulse from Sage Community School are among the

8,000 students representing more than 1,400 teams that have advanced to participate in Global Finals 2018. “Going to Global Finals is a once in a lifetime chance for me,” said Chris Lo. “We get to show the world what we can do!” “This is my first year in DI,” shared Zoe Johnson. “It’s so exciting that we are going to Tennessee. This means the world to me!”

Destination Imagination is a leader in project-based learning opportunities that blend STEM education with the arts and social entrepreneurship. Its academic Challenges are studentdirected and are designed to teach kids how to think, not what to think. Teams who participate have the opportunity to present their solutions at regional and state tournaments. "I am very grateful to be going to Globals. I’m sure it’s going to be an amazing, awesome and exciting experience. I hope me and my team enjoy it," said Rhiannon Burkhart. “I am really excited and honored to go to Globals! I think my whole team is ready to go, because we did very well at the Affiliates,” added Willow Daniels. Each year, DI competitions begin with a regional tournament, where team solutions are assessed by a panel of trained Appraisers, ranging from educators to artists to engineers. Each team solution is scored on a variety of elements, including originality, workmanship, presentation and teamwork. Teams with the highest scores advance to the Affiliate Oregon Tournaments. The top-tiered teams from the Affiliate Tournaments advance to Global Finals. “I’m excited! I cannot believe we made it! It will be so much fun in Tennessee, especially since I was born there. I can’t wait to see fresh, beautiful Tennessee again,” said Kaitlynn Milano. “I am both amazed and surprised to be going to a very big and special place. This will be fun,” added Caleb Swanson-Utley. Destination Imagination dedicates itself to enriching the global community by providing opportunities for learners of all ages to explore and discover using the creative process from imagination to innovation. Klamath Tribes: Restoration of the Spirit 2018 Each year, Prevention has been able to create mental health promotion messages that are weaved with Klamath Tribes culture and beliefs. This year we will focus on the creation story, ancestral teachings, lessons of mother nature, and spiritual and cultural revival. All of these elements are critical in addressing mental health and substance abuse in our tribal community. We encourage you to spread the word and look forward to seeing you on this night. NOAA forecast for this week

The winter of 2017/18 will go down in the record books as the snowiest on record in Billings, Montana's largest city. After an additional 2.6 inches of snow on April 23, Billings officially reached its snowiest winter on record, with 106.1 inches of snow so far this winter through the afternoon of April 23. The previous record for Billings took place in 2013-14 when 103.5 inches of snow fell. In an average winter, Billings sees only 55.1 inches of snow, making this winter’s total nearly double the seasonal average.

Vanuatu's Manoro Voui volcano, also known as Ambae and Aoba, erupted in September 2017, forcing short-term mass evacuation. The entire island was evacuated but most of its 11,000 residents returned by December, only to find their island covered in ash, grey and lifeless. The eruptions re-intensified in March 2018, releasing huge amounts of ash. In addition, in just one eruption at the beginning of April, Ambae released more sulfur than any other eruption in the world over the past 3 years. The government has since admitted that families on Ambae are struggling to live due to heavy volcanic ash and announced the urgent, total and permanent evacuation of the island. All people are to leave the island forever by May 1. Read more

At least 22 of 34 provinces are already suffering badly. In a statement released by the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) reads: "the extremely dry winter has affected 22 provinces across Afghanistan and now threatens to negatively impact the lives of one million people, with an additional two million who could feel its effects over the coming months." According to the statement, 23 - 30 % of water sources have gone dry. Food insecurity and reduced access to safe water are beginning to take their toll in the 10 worst affected provinces. Read more

Ten youths, nine girls and a boy from a pre-military academy, were killed after they were carried off by a surge in the Tzafit stream west of the southern part of the Dead Sea amid intense storms that hit the South of Israel on Thursday. The body of a missing female student was located late Thursday night, bringing the death toll to 10, after search and rescue operations in the Judean Desert continued through the night. Efforts were earlier halted around 8 p.m. due to danger posed to the team by the harsh weather conditions. Two other students of the school were moderately wounded and were taken to the Soroka-University Medical Center in

Credit: Menahem Kahana/AFP Heavy rain and floods affecting Kenya since March 2018 have displaced more than 211,000 people, killed at least 72 and injured 33 across the country. The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected to continue and called on Kenyans to be prepared for flooding, as water levels have already surpassed the usual season’s average. As of April 25, about 50,000 people are reportedly stranded in several villages in Moyale, near the border with Ethiopia, after a road linking them to the border town was cut off by floods. KRCS said they have been unable to access food and water supplies for 10 days. Read more See a video

A crisis of plastic waste in Indonesia has become so acute that the army has been called in to help. Rivers and canals are clogged with dense masses of bottles, bags and other plastic packaging. Officials say they are engaged in a "battle" against waste that accumulates as quickly as they clear it. In Bandung, Indonesia's third largest city, we witnessed the shocking sight of a concentration of plastic waste so thick that it looked like an iceberg and blocked a major tributary.

Soldiers deployed on a barge used nets to try to extract bags, Styrofoam food boxes and bottles, a seemingly futile task because all the time more plastic flowed their way from further upstream. The soldiers we filmed had planned to load the plastic onto trucks but because the vehicles never arrived they decided on a different course of action: to use a digger to push the waste downstream. I asked the sergeant what would happen to it. It was up to another unit to collect, he said. It became someone else's problem. Read more Photo: David Shukman Monarch Butterflies in the Pacific Northwest: In central Washington and central Oregon we have been seeing over the past few days, fast-flying orange, black and white butterflies heading north or north west. These are California Tortoiseshells (Nymphalis californica) doing exactly what Monarchs do, expanding their range north from California and southern Oregon where they overwintered! Normally populations of CA Tortoiseshells are relatively small and the northward spring migration is rarely noticeable. But in 2017 huge populations developed in parts of Oregon, so current populations are still quite large. CA Tortoiseshells are seeking Mountain Lilac (Ceanothus spp.) plants to lay their eggs on. They lay batches of 250+ eggs and caterpillars can locally defoliate Ceanothus! If climate conditions are good and natural mortality low, we could be seeing very large numbers of California tortoiseshells in the PNW this summer!

More than half of the fresh fruit and almost a third of the fresh vegetables Americans buy now come from other countries. Whatever the drawbacks or

advantages, imports are likely to continue growing. According to a recent Agriculture Department report, fresh produce imports will rise 45 percent from

2016 to 2027, implying that a decade from now, three-quarters of our fruits and almost half of our vegetables will be imported. Read more

Klamath Humane Society – volunteers needed at the Humane Society. We are getting started on our

disaster program and need volunteers in the Chiloquin area. We also are looking for people who can write grants. Foster homes for dogs and cats are always needed. For more information, contact the shelter at 882-1119 or e-mail [email protected]. Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) – a statewide program working with children K-3 during school hours. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a child for ½ hour, helping them read (or reading to the youngest). We always need volunteers, whether scheduled every week or merely as a substitute reader when the regular reader is unable to attend. Call the number below for an application or fill out an on-line application at www.getsmartoregon.org. It will be the most rewarding hour you ever volunteer! Contact the SMART office at 273-2424 or the Chiloquin Elementary School at 783-2338 or call Junie Stacey at 541-281-9787

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.
