A Message from Mr. Ross… Spring, the most exciting; yet challenging time of the school year for students, teachers, and parents. Thirty- six weeks of school is now down to only six weeks. Six weeks to stay the course, six weeks to improve, and six weeks to learn as much as you can before entering into summer hibernation. With a number of end of the year field trips and our 8th grade recognition program on the horizon, students at Riley Street Middle School have a lot to look forward to. Too often with young teens and tweens looking ahead can often lead to being forgetful about the present. Students are encouraged to stay the course and display the same study habits they have all year. Parental expectations play a large role in helping our students achieve at the highest level. Please encourage your student(s) to stay laser-focused on the academic tasks in front of them as they gleefully await the “fun” stuff taking place around school to wrap up the year. Behavioral expectations remain the same for our students regardless of what month the calendar reads. It remains customary for students at Riley Street Middle School to Do What’s Right, Treat Others Well, and to Do Their Personal Best. Lately, we’ve seen a spike in student behaviors and poor decisions that can have a negative impact on our school culture. Below I listed a few areas that I’d appreciate all parents taking the opportunity to discuss with their children: Peer Conflict ~ Assist your student in developing an appropriate response or strategy to use when they disagree with someone, feel hurt or wronged by someone. Dress Requirements / Hygiene ~ Assist your student in choosing modest clothing to wear that is in compliance with our dress requirements and appropriate for current weather conditions. The warm days ahead will also require even the most reluctant student to stay mindful of cleanliness and daily use of deodorant. Social Media / Technology ~ Assist your student and provide clear expectations for online behavior if you allow them to partake. Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Brady and I have been addressing a number of social immaturity issues lately tied directly to texting and snapchat. Consider moving your child offline or begin using many of the parental control features to stay involved in your child’s digital world. Thanks for your partnership and entrusting us with your children. The staff and I consider it a privilege to work alongside the students and parents of Riley Street Middle School. The Hudsonville Band Boosters is happy to announce that Marco’s Pizza will once again be sponsoring our band

program as our “Restaurant of the Month” offering a 20% donation to the band program. Please show your support at

Marco’s Pizza on Wednesday, May 9 anytime between 11am and 10pm and mention the Hudsonville Band Program to be a

part of this great fundraiser.

The money raised will assist the booster program in providing the finances, manpower and awareness needed to present our young musicians with exceptional music education and performance

opportunities.

This fundraiser is not limited to band families. Please share with family, friends and co-workers. Just be sure to mention the

Hudsonville Band Program when ordering.

7th grade End of Year Field Trip ~ Our 7th graders will have the opportunity to attend a fun and exciting end of year field trip to 3 Mile Project in Grand Rapids on Friday, May 25. The 3 Mile Project is a youth community center that features activities such as: basketball, volleyball, foosball, pool tables, movie theatre, video game stations, gagaball and reball.

While it's our hope that all of our 7th graders attend the field trip, it would not be in good conscience for us as educators to allow failing students to attend this school function. Please note that any 7th grade student who has missing work or is failing a class as of Friday, May 18 will not be allowed to attend the end of year field trip to 3 Mile Project. They will attend school that day for work time and academic support. Look for additional information and permission slips early May.

Letter from the President

Back in October, students in the 8th grade wrote argument letters to local, state, or federal government officials discussing a topic and why their opinion was valid and fair. Many students chose to write to their local officials in hopes that they were more likely to get a response. One student, Brianna Chando, in Mrs. Biondo's class, decided to write to the top government official: the President. Much to her (and her teacher's) surprise she received a response! In her letter, she argued that oil and gas

pipeline government inspections need to be executed with stricter federal policies. In the response from the President, he thanked her for sharing her views and provided other informational documents stamped with the official seal. We love to have an authentic audience for our writing, and it sure doesn't get much more authentic than that!

PLEASE VOTE TUESDAY, MAY 8ANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL AND

SINKING FUND MILLAGE PROPOSAL On May 8, two ballot proposals will come before Hudsonville School parents and community members. The first is our annual Non-Homestead Millage renewal. This is an annual renewal voters have approved for the past 23 years and would generate approximately $4.4 million dollars of

operating revenue for our school district. Of note, this is not a tax on primary residences and is not a new tax. Additionally, the State of Michigan assumes all districts levy the full 18 mills. If voters reject the proposal, our district’s state aid is reduced accordingly. The second proposal is our Building and Site Sinking Fund. Effective March of 2017, Public Act 319 expanded a district’s ability to utilize Building and Site Funds for security and technology. The House passed the bill in June, 2016 with a vote of 107-1, and the Senate passed it 36-0 in October, 2016. Even though Hudsonville has had this millage for the past 25 years, because the legislature expanded the use, the ballot language identifies it as a new millage. Of note, both millages will MAINTAIN our citizens’ current millage rate and will not raise taxes. Previous improvements made as a result of this one mill levy have included additional classrooms to accommodate all day every day kindergarten, roof repairs, boiler replacements, and land acquisitions.

Click here for official ballot language.
