A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2013 NFL Draft have been awarded to 16 teams. The Houston Texans were awarded two compen-satory picks: the 33rd picks in the third (95th overall) and sixth rounds (201st overall). Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more

or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensa-

tory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 222 choices in the seven rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft. This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third

through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on sal-

ary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. Two clubs this year (Indianapolis and the New York Giants) will each

receive a compensatory pick even though they did not suffer a net loss of compensatory free agents last year. Under the formula, the compen-satory free agents lost by these clubs were ranked higher than the ones they signed (by a specified point differential based upon salary and per-formance).

Former Texans C Steve McKinney will announce the team’s second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft on Friday, April 26. McKinney was one of 32 NFL alumni selected to announce picks from

the podium at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Among the others cho-sen are six Pro Football Hall of Famers, including three from the Class of 2013.An original Texan, McKinney was the first unrestricted free agent to be

signed in team history in March 2002. He started the first 67 games in franchise history and was with the team until 2007. A Galveston native who grew up in Houston, McKinney was a third-round pick of the India-napolis Colts in 1998 out of Texas A&M. The tradition of NFL alumni announcing picks started in 2011. Former

Texans cornerback Aaron Glenn announced the team’s selection of Brooks Reed in the second round of that year’s draft. Former Texans linebacker Danny Clark announced the pick of DeVier Posey in the third round at the 2012 draft. - From HoustonTexans.com

BEYOND THE FIRST

The state of Texas arguably has the greatest football passion and pedi-gree in the country, whether it be at the youth, high school, college or pro level. So it should be no surprise that the Houston Texans have drafted 16 players overall and at least one player in every draft that either went to college or high school, or has some connection to Texas.Below is a look at what players the Houston Texans have drafted who

are either from Texas or went to college in Texas.

Sept. 22 at Baltimore 1-6-0* Houston is still looking for its first win at Baltimore and redemption from a pair of losses at M&T Bank Stadium in 2012, includ-ing a 20-13 loss in the AFC Divisional playoff. The Texans are 0-3 all-time at Baltimore.

Sept. 29 Seattle 1-1-0 The visiting team has been blown out in both meetings in the series with the Texans losing 42-10 at Qwest Field in 2005. Houston evened the series with a 34-7 win at Reliant Stadium in 2009 behind 193 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns from WR Andre Johnson.

Oct. 6 at San Francisco 1-1-0 Both games in the series have been decided by a field goal. Joe Nedney hit a 33-yard field goal with 3:52 remaining in over-time to give San Francisco a 20-17 win in Houston’s last trip to Candlestick Park on Jan. 1, 2006.

Oct. 13 St. Louis 1-1-0 Both meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less. The Rams won in their only other visit to Reliant Stadium, 33-26 in overtime, on Nov. 27, 2005, despite a franchise-record seven sacks by the Texans. Rams QB Ryan Fitzpatrick ended the game with a 56-yard TD pass to WR Kevin Curtis.

Nov. 24 Jacksonville 12-10-0 Head coach Gary Kubiak is 6-1 at home against the Jaguars since taking over in 2006. Houston has averaged 32 points per game in that time and amassed 653 yards of total offense in a 43-37 overtime win at Reliant Stadium last year.

Dec. 1 New England 1-4-0* The Texans are looking to avenge a pair of road losses suffered at the hands of the Patriots in 2012, including a 41-28 loss in the Divisional round of the playoffs. Houston defeated New England, 34-27 in the 2009 season finale.

Dec. 5 at Jacksonville 12-10-0 The Texans have won their last two games at EverBank Field, a first in franchise history. Seven of the 11 road matchups have been decided by a touchdown or less. The Texans have never won three consecutive road games against a single division opponent and their five road wins against Jacksonville are the most in franchise history against a single opponent.

Dec. 22 Denver 2-2-0 The teams have met only one other time in Reliant Stadium, a 31-13 win by the Texans in Week 15 of 2007. Houston came away with a 31-25 win at Denver in Week 3 of the 2012 season.

LONE STAR SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT DRAFT NOTES

Since its inception in 2006, the Texas Bowl has played host to some of the National Football League’s best players before they became stars on Sunday. Fifteen eventual first-round draft picks have played in the Texas Bowl, and the Bowl has been a proving ground for five quarterbacks who would go on to start on Sunday afternoons.

In addition to being a first-round pick and eventual NFL starter, BaylorQB Robert Griffin III became the first future Heisman Trophy winner to play in the Texas Bowl when he won the award in 2011. Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel gave the Bowl its second Heisman-winning alumnus last season, though Manziel did not actually play in the Bowl as a redshirt freshman.
