According to the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency’s 2012 National Survey, 46percent o respondents believed that a natural disaster
will occur in their community; however, nearly 70percent o Americans have not participated in apreparedness drill or exercise in their home, school,or workplace in the past two years. At the National Weather Service, in conjunctionwith America’s PrepareAthon! , our goal is to help allMontanans:• Understand which disasters could happen in their
community;• Know what to do to be sae and to mitigate damages;• Practice drills and share inormation to better
prepare the community;• Participate in community resilience planning. o reach these goals, the Glasgow UmpiresAssociation will hold lightning saety drills with allsix o their local Cal Ripkin youth baseball teams atthe irst games o the season, starting April 29th at 6and 8 pm, and on April 30th at 4 pm.
hese drills give players, coaches, umpires, amilies, and spectators the opportunity to prepareor and to practice what they would do in a real severeweather emergency. Practicing these preparednessskills is vital or learning how to react to severeweather and or staying calm during emergencies.
he Glasgow Umpires Association recentlybecame Weather Ready Nation Ambassadors. Forover a decade this dedicated group has practicedlightning and thunderstorm saety at Cal Ripkin,Babe Ruth and American Legion Games in theGlasgow area. he most impressive event may have been theJune 2007 supercell that caused nearly $35 million in
Cal Ripken to participate in America’s Preparathondamages across the region; they sent everyone homewith plenty o time to get to saety. So, i you see them checking cell phones during a
game, it’s not to check MLB scores, but rather to checkradar and lightning data to keep players and spectatorssae! Te National Weather Service and America’sPrepareAthon! wish to thank them or their dedicationto the saety o the players and the spectators. America’s PrepareAthon! is a national, grassrootscampaign or action to increase individual andcommunity preparedness and resilience throughhazard-speciic drills and exercises or hazardsrelevant to their area. o learn more about America’sPrepareAthon! We had a little debate when FLIP’s
called in their sandwhich special this
morning. Is it “bleu” cheese or “blue
cheese? Why the ancy “bleu” that so
many use? What’s wrong with “blue”?
So we went to the internet to find the
answer.
I you are among those that spell it
“bleu” cheese (and we have in the past)
you’ll be dismayed to hear this, but
the phrase “blue cheese” showed up in
English a century and a hal beore the
Frenchified “bleu cheese” version.
In act, the phrase “blue cheese”
may have appeared in English beore
romage bleu made its appearance in
French. Here’s the story. Te earliest example o the phrase
“blue cheese” in the Oxord English
Dictionary is rom an Aug. 3, 1787, entry
in Te orrington Diaries, an account
o John Byng orrington’s travels in
England and Wales:
“I eat to day at dinner, and at supper,
some excellent blue cheese … which …
resembles, both in color and taste, the
blue mold o Cheshire cheese.” It wasn’t until the 20th century that
“bleu cheese” showed up. Te earliest
examples were rom the 1940s. A 1941
issue o the journal Dairy Industries,
or example, notes that “Frenchmen
are no longer particularly interested in
Argentine bleu cheese.” (Argentine bleu
cheese? Who knew?)
Interestingly, the only citation or
“bleu cheese” in the OED is rom this
quip by Ogden Nash in You Can’t Get
Tere From Here (1957): “Every time the
menu lists bleu cheese I want to order
romage blue, / Don’t you?”
Te earliest example o romage
bleu in a search o French works in the
Google Books database was in Huit
Jours d’Absence, an 1821 book by H.
Saint-Tomas.
In gushing over a cheesemonger’s
creations, the author writes that nous
mangeon avec délices (“we eat with
delight”) the delicacies rom the
marchand de romage bleu (“the blue-
cheese merchant”).
But even i it turns out that thereare earlier examples o romage bleu out
there, we see no reason why an English
speaker should reer to all blue cheeses
as “bleu cheeses.”
Te three best-known blue cheeses
are probably Roqueort (French),
Gorgonzola (Italian), and Stilton
(English).
It would be just as silly to reer to
Gorgonzola as a “bleu cheese” or unromage bleu as it would be to use either
term or Stilton.
As or Roqueort, why shouldn’t an
American (good speller or bad) call it
a “blue cheese”? Afer all, the cheese is
French, not the speaker.
At any rate, the FLIP burger o the
week sounds pretty darned good, any
way you cut it.
