Get your taste buds ready: This Sunday, March 28th, at 5 PM in Anderson Hall, Broadmoor will host its annual Burnt Of- ferings cook-off, a church-wide fundraiser for missions. In addition to tasting an array of some great food prepared by budding chefs from the congregation, the evening includes a live auction with some very unusual and interesting items. The event and auc- tion fundraise for a variety of missions in the church, including the Neighborhood Block Party, scholarships for mission trips to Cuba and Russia, the Layette Ministry for newborns at LSUMC, the Red Bag Ministry for Noel Food Pantry, and the Kid's Hope tutoring program, just to name a few. Tickets will be for sale at the Wel- come Center on Sunday, $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets will allow you to sample a bite-sized portion of each dish. Come and feed your stomach and spirit with the sampling of delicious foods prepared by the church community. I was putting down a little sod in the yard, and I figured out that I don’t much like robins. I think I’m supposed to, harbingers of spring, “bob, bob, bobbin’ along” and all that. But, honestly, they give me the creeps. Those yellow circles around their eyes don’t help. And at times, I’d be breaking up dirt and suddenly have this feeling that I was being watched. And I was. A robin would have taken up a perch very nearby, in hopes that I was turning up a juicy worm snack. I guess my main complaint is that it seems they want someone else to do the hard work. They wait for me to break the ground, and they would reap the results. And then I thought, maybe I judge them too harshly, and myself hardly at all. How many times, every day, am I the beneficiary of someone else’s good work? When I consider the people—family, friends, complete strangers—whose work makes my life possible, it makes the words of John Donne ring true: no one is an island. Or the Apostle Paul: we are members of one body. So, the next time a red, red robin comes to visit, I will try not to begrudge him a worm or two. And maybe he will give me a song. See you Sunday, Broadmoor is also pleased to announce the addition of our new Business Administrator Terry Love. Terry has complet- ed twenty years of ministry in the Louisiana Confer- ence of the United Methodist Church as an Ordained El- der, most recently as the head pastor at St. Luke's UMC in Shreveport. He plans on retir- ing from full-time ministry in June, but feels called to continue to serve a local church part-time. Terry attended semi- nary at Perkins on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas, and before St. Lukes's he worked as a youth minister at Summer Grove UMC and as an Associ- ate Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Monroe. Terry has extensive experience work- ing with church finances and budge and, leading financial campaigns, and has previously served on the Louisiana Conference's Mis- sion Finance Com- mittee and Board of Pensions. Looking for a small group? We have a new United Methodist Women Circle (Soul Sisters) that is starting. We are young (30ish) women with full-time families, school and church responsibilities, and careers. We are all on the same walk in life learning how to juggle everything without losing sight of who we are as women and how we personally identify. We support and encourage one another and lead by example to the community that it’s okay to be you, it’s okay to make mistake and through it all we can still have a major positive impact. Our focus is support-ing and encouraging one another and the community by focusing on families and children. We will be meeting in members homes or other pre-determined activity locations on the first Friday evening of each month. Charter members include Jerry Byrd, President, Ashley Hochstetler, Treasurer, Kylie Clinton, Kimberly Dollar, Rachel King, Kristin Nelson, Jennifer Powers, Emily Robinson, Andrea Seaton and Beth Wooden

Women's Luncheon

Shepherding God, You are the one who leads us into life. Lead us in the paths of righ-teousness and justice for Your name’s sake. Even though we walk through the darkness of bombings, of shootings, of floods, of earthquakes, of death, of sickness, of war in our world we will not let fear overtake us. We will not fear evil in this world, for You are with us as a shepherd is with his sheep. You are comforting us as a mother comforts a hurt child. May we feel your presence as we walk through the coming days.

In the presence of those who hate, You are preparing the table of love for us. You bless the ones who love and call us to be transforming bold carriers of love in the world, so that even the ones who hate will be transformed

by Your love. Our blessings overflow because of the love You have shown through our reaching out to one another—through the acts of kindness, the caring strangers, the daring first responders, the solidarity of Bostonians, Texans, Americans…home of the brave. Holy God as a news anchor asked if there was a superhero in Ameri-cans…I think there is…you. You are the superhero that lives inside of us….the father, the son and the holy spirit….blessed trinity. Surely good-ness and mercy will be with all of us all the days of our life. Surely goodness and mercy will overflow and overwhelm any acts of evil in this world. Surely goodness and mercy will overcome the world, and we will dwell in the love of God forever and ever. Amen.

Broadmoor will hold a National Day of Prayer Service on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 in the sanctuary. This service is open to the community and it will offer a time of silent prayer, guided prayer, taize chorus, scripture readings and singing. There will be a time of personal prayer and prayer for our community, nation and world. Prayer is the primary power that has directed us and upholds us in times of joy and in times of difficulty. The National Day of Prayer is a time when we recognize God’s grace and ask for God’s continued direction in our lives, in our community, country and world.

Mission Opportunity: Beauty for Ashes

Isaiah 61:1 & 3

checks out to Broadmoor UMC, and bring filled bags to the Welcome Center. For more information, contact Kel-lie Taylor at 318.572.8553.

I realize that it is still one week away, but I want to talk about the anthem that will be sung on May 5th at the 8:30 service. Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756-1791) composed “Ave Verum Corpus” in 1791. This was also the year that he composed his final work, Requiem.

The Latin poetry, used by many other composers before and after Mozart, is one of the most well known texts. Quite possibly written by either Pope Innocent III or Pope Innocent IV in the Thirteenth century, the words are:

“Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, cujus latus perforatum,

unda fluxit et sanguine: Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O Jesu dulcis, O Jesu pie, O Jesu, fili Mariae. Miserere mei. Amen.”

An approximate poetic English translation is as follows:

“Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who having truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood: May it be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death. Oh sweet

Jesus, Oh pious Jesus, Oh Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen. ‘

For whatever reason, Mozart did not include the final sentence: “O Jesu dulcis…”
