The Bible Belongs in Schools
From Christian History Institute
THE NARRATIVE of United States history is inex-tricably intertwined with references to the Bible. For instance, when the Pilgrims spoke of creating a shining city on a hill, they were alluding to words of Jesus. In the same way, when settlers of Virginia observed a day of thanks toward God on the an-niversary of their arrival, they were obeying Scriptural in-junctions to give thanks. Abra-ham Lincoln warned that a house divided cannot stand, knowing his listeners would immediately recognize Jesus Christ as the authority for those words. Readers of Harri-et Tubman’s biography would have recognized her prayer “Oh, Lord! You’ve been wid me in six troubles, don’t desert me in the seventh!” as an allu-sion to Job 5:19 “He will de-liver you from six troubles; in seven no evil shall touch you.” And, when slave owners referred to the curse of Ham as a justification for holding blacks in thrall, the story of Noah and his sons would leap to a Bible reader’s mind. Likewise, when abolitionists declared slaves to be brothers, Bible readers would also recognize the allusion to Philemon 15–16: “Perhaps the reason he was sep-
arated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever—no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother.” The Ten Commandments are chiseled into stone at the Supreme Court of the United States, and the very names of many American cities reflect Bibli-cal lore: Bethlehem, Philadelphia, Beulah, Zion, Hell, and many more. Presidents and other prom-inent individuals have worn biblical names: John
Witherspoon, Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln, James Madison, Abigail Adams.
Educators have argued that cultural literacy demands a basic knowledge of the Bible. For this reason, Time magazine joined the push for biblical literacy on April 2, 2007, when David van Biema argued “The Case for Teaching the Bible.”
“Simply put,” Biema stated, “the Bible is the most influen-
tial book ever written. Not only is the Bible the best-selling book of all time, it is the best-selling book of the year every year.”
Biema mentioned Shakespeare’s 1,300 allusions to Bible passages and other references to the Bible in literature. He also argued that we “need the Bible to make sense of the ideas and rhetoric that have helped drive U.S. history.”

Attention Senior Saints,
We are wanting to involve our youth in some service projects this year. But...we need your help! Do you need some yard work, window washing, car washing, paint-ing, cleaning, etc. done around your house, but you’re finding it difficult to get it done on your own? We would like to be of assi-tance! “Service” is FREE and comes with a smile. Please see Mike or Andrea Crisp if you have a project for our youth. PLEASE don’t be shy! We WANT service projects! You’d be helping create ser-vant hearts in our youth!

Suggested Good Work Take the time to pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ all around the world who are perse-cuted for their faith.
Control Your Tongue When you are tempted to joke about sin: “Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is favor” (Proverbs 14.9).
The Wisdom of George Washington: On honesty, justice, and minding your own business “In politics as in philosophy, my tenets are few and simple. The leading one of which, and indeed that which embraces most others, is to be honest and just ourselves and to exact it from others, med-dling as little as possible in their affairs where our own are not in-volved. If this maxim was general-ly adopted, wars would cease and our swords would soon be con-
verted into reap hooks and our harvests be more peaceful, abun-dant, and happy.”
The Wisdom of Augustine of Hippo: On whether you truly believe the Gospel “If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don’t like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself.”
Do you want a life without struggle? “Success is sweet, the sweeter if long delayed and attained through manifold struggles and defeats.” –A. Bronson Alcott
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” –Frederick Douglass
“Do not feel entitled to anything you do not sweat or struggle for.” –Marian Wright Edelman
“Strength only grows from strug-gle.” –Louis L’Amour
“The reward is not so great with-out the struggle…The triumph can’t be had without the struggle.” –Wilma Rudolph
“We take no delight in existence except when we are struggling for something.” –Arthur Schopen-hauer
“I’ve never forgotten for long at a time that living is struggle. I know that every good and excellent thing in the world stands moment by moment on the razor-edge of danger and must be fought for—whether it’s a field, or a home, or a country.” –Thornton Wilder
“Nothing, I am sure, calls forth the faculties so much as the being obliged to struggle with the world.” –Mary Wollstonecraft
“We glory in tribulations, know-ing that tribulation produces per-severance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5.3–4).
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and com-plete, lacking nothing” (James 1.2–4).
