St. Francis de Sales Parish
Our mission at St. Francis de Sales is to joyfully welcome you to our parish family of faith, trusting that: if you are seeking Christ,
you will find Him here. If grieving, you will receive comfort. If troubled in spirit, you will receive the blessing of peace without being judged. If discouraged, you will rejoice in hope. If alone,
you will find companionship and Christian love. May our parish be a sanctuary of peace for you as we journey
together to the Father’s house.

REFLECTION
Happy Easter. Today we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus
from the tomb. For the past three weekends, we have looked
at the possible reasons (and their refutations) as to why the
Resurrection of Jesus may not have occurred. It is precisely
the Resurrection that proves the veracity of Jesus’ claim to
being God and His founding of the Catholic Church.
The last three weekends we wrote about the “Theft Theory,”
the “Swoon Theory,” and the “Hallucination Theory.” Today
we look at the “Symbol Theory.”
The Symbol Theory arises out of our secularized mindset
which refuses to accept objective criteria for faith. This
Symbol Theory argues that the disciples did not really see the
Resurrected Jesus, but that they did not lie either. The people
who espouse this theory “believe” that the disciples were
expressing their faith in Christ’s message of transformed, new
life through the use of symbolic terms.
To refute this Symbol Theory here are some points.
First, if Jesus did not physically rise out of the tomb, no one
can explain why there was no cult of the grave for the dead
Jesus as there assuredly would have been under such
circumstances.
Second, there was no pre-existing literary symbolism of this
type on which the evangelists could draw. The closest thing
that they knew of was the Old Testament prophet Elijah being
taken up into heaven as a ratification of his mission. But this
is quite different from a bodily death and bodily Resurrection.
Third, it is not easy to see how a mere symbol could have
transformed the hearts of the disciples from fear to stone type
courage, taking them from flight to martyrdom.
St. Paul wrote in his first Letter to the Corinthians 15:14, “If
Christ has not been raised then empty too is our preaching;
empty too is your faith.” In verses 17-19: “and if Christ has
not been raised, your faith is vain; you’re still in your sins.
Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If
for this life only we hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable
people of all.”
He is Risen. Alleluia.
(The aforementioned theories on 31 March, 7, 14, 21 April
refuting the Resurrection of Christ were taken from
Catholicculture.org by Jeff Mirus).
MARRIAGE & COMMUNION
Due to the many misconceptions regarding the Catholic Church
and marriage, please note that a Catholic may marry a non-
Catholic in the Catholic Church, without his or her conversion
to the faith. In some instances, a person, who has been
previously married, can also be married in the Catholic Church
after consultation with the priest.
If as a Catholic you’re married outside of the Catholic Church
without the permission of the Church, we respectfully ask that
you refrain from receiving the Eucharist until your marriage has
been validated (“sacramentalized”) by a Catholic priest or
deacon. To remedy this situation, please call one of the priests
to make an appointment to have your marriage validated. We
are only too happy to bring back to the couple, the graces
necessary to live out their marriage, and to reconcile them with
the graces of the Eucharist.
The Confirmation candidates have successfully
completed their preparations for the sacrament of
Confirmation. The grade 7’s will attend their
Confirmation rehearsal as part of the school day. The
rehearsal for the children who attend Public/Private
and Other Catholic schools is on Saturday April 27th
at 10:00am. Please see the below dates and times for
the sacrament of Confirmation:
April 29th-St Jude, St Josephine Bakhita at 7:00pm
April 30th -St Andre Bessette, St Catherine of Siena,
Other Catholic schools at 7:00pm
May 1st - Public/Private schools, St Francis de Sales, St
Patrick at 7:00pm
This week we begin to prepare the children for their
sacrament of First Communion through the grade 2
retreats and class visits. During the retreats, we are
hoping the children feel the beautiful welcome of the
Catholic church community while they become familiar
with the special places in the Church, the parts of the
Mass, the items used at Mass, the liturgical year and
prayer, through fun interactive games and activities.
Please refer to the RCIC preparation schedule if your
child attends a Public School, Other Catholic School or is
in grade 3-6. Classes will resume at the Parish on
Saturday April 27th from 3-4:30pm.
FIRST
COMMUNION
A message from the youth attending SteubieTO 2019 & Edge Camp 2019:
Through the Office of Catholic Youth, the Archdiocese of Toronto has worked to create meaningful, faith-based experiences for youth, with the aim of transforming young Catholics “into one of [Christ’s] faith-filled disciples”. Included in these experiences is the Steubenville Toronto Catholic Youth Conference and Edge Camp. Celebrating its 6th year this year, the Steubenville Toronto Conference is a Catholic overnight weekend experience for youth in grades 8-12; while Edge Camp, now in its 10th year, is a Catholic overnight adventure camp for young people in grades 6-8.
This year several youth from our parish have signed up to attend Edge Camp and the Steubenville Conference. The cost of Edge Camp is $475 and the cost of the conference is $310. These amounts include meals, accommodation and transportation to and from Edge Camp and Steubenville Toronto. While all of us who will be attending these events this summer are eager to do so, not all of us are able to afford to pay the full fees associated with these experiences. Next weekend, there will be a second collection to help raise funds to support the youth attending the Youth Conference and Edge Camp. Please consider helping us by making a donation during the second collection next weekend.
Sincerely,
The SFDS Youth attending Steubenville Toronto 2019 and Edge Camp 2019
