  • APRIL 21, 2019

  • WELCOME

Westminster Presbyterian Church is a covenant family of believers called by God to fulfill His purposes here in Laurel, and as a staging ground for worldwide kingdom growth where we seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ – to fill the earth with disciples, subdue it redemptively for God’s glory, and worship Him joyfully. We are being redeemed and equipped by the Spirit to build up one another until the Lord returns.

He has raised Jesus from the dead. God has claimed us as His own. He has brought us out of darkness. He has made us light to the world. Alleluia! Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia! -based on 1 Peter 1:3-5

    HYMN OF PRAISE*

Christ the Lord Is Risen Today

  • CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY

  • PROFESSION OF OUR CHURCH’S FAITH* This is the good news that we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved, if we hold it fast:
that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
that he was buried,
that he was raised on the third day,
and that he appeared first to the women,
then to Peter, and to the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Jesus Christ is the first and the last, the beginning and the end;
he is our Lord and our God.
 —based on Matthew 16:16; Mark 16:9; John 20:28; 1 Corinthians 15:1-6; Revelation 22:13

    CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN

If, at times, we deny You, God forgive. When the risks of discipleship are high, and we are nowhere to be found:
 God forgive.
When we wash our hands of responsibility:
 God forgive.
When we cast our lot with powerful oppressors and seek to buy freedom with silver:
 God forgive.
When fear keeps us from witnessing to Your truth, or prejudice keeps us from believing it:
 God forgive.
In the bright light of Easter morning, O God, our sin is exposed,
and Your grace is revealed.
 Loving Father,
raise us in Your love so that, with joy,
we may witness to Your awesome deeds, in the name of Jesus, the risen One. Amen.
(Hear now our silent and individual prayers of confession)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON AND THE LORDS PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN.

  • Valerie Elliot Shepard was the only daughter born to missionary parents, Elisabeth and Jim Elliot. Her parents were missionaries to the Quichua Indians of the Amazon jungle. In January 1956, while attempting to reach the Waodani Indians (a primitive and savage stone-age tribe) with four other missionaries, Jim was speared to death. Valerie and her mother continued to live with the Quichuas and were miraculously invited

to live with the Waodani tribe that had killed Jim. Valerie’s mother along with another missionary, Rachel Saint, learned to speak the language and translated the story of Jesus to them.

Valerie has written two books, Pilipinto’s Happiness and very recently, Devotedly: The Personal Letters and Love Story of Jim and Elisabeth Elliot.

Please join us as Valerie Elliot Shepard tells the story of her parent’s missionary work and love story and her own endeavors as a pastor’s wife, mother of eight, she and her husband’s missionary work in Africa, and how they chose to live in God’s grace with joy.
