BISHOP STEVENrsquoS LETTER ( EDITEDhellip ) FOR MAGAZINES This comes with love and prayers as we navigate the next stage of the pandemic togetherhellip We are still waiting for more detailed guidance from the Church of England for churches The national Church is waiting for further detail from the government and is pressing for this Every local church will now be thinking through plans for worship over the coming weeks As you move forward we want to affirm again the importance of local collaborative decision making Every situation is different Listen carefully to national and local health guidance on when it will be wise to begin and extend in-person worship The government is working to the helpful principle of moving forward steadily but carefully at this stage of the pandemic We believe this is helpful guidance for churches as well as for wider society Circumstances may change but we would hope that every benefice will now be planning to begin public worship in something like the normal patterns by Step 3 of the road map At present this will begin not earlier than 17 May just before the Feast of Pentecost Social distancing and other COVID precautions will continue to be necessary But we hope that together there can be a sense of every church building being open again after the lockdown as we remember celebrate and pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our life and mission Navigating through Lent Holy Week and Easter will be more complex We anticipate and will actively support a varied approach in different places There will be a great deal of pain for congregations who are again unable to meet together normally to celebrate Easter We will need to continue to be patient and gentle with one another through this time +Steven also draws our attention to Psalm 23 as we look ahead to the next few months to the need to lsquoshepherdrsquo both ourselves and one another as we look to bring healing restoration and encouragement without taking on too much at once His podcasts on Isaiah 40-55 are now available in a short book Comfortable Words a call to restoration (see the diocesan website for details)

We also hope to be open for private prayers on Easter day so things are progressing in the right direction We have received advice from the diocese in the form of Bishop Stevenrsquos letter on the proceeding page We still have to be cautious in our approach to opening up and flexible in the changes which face us On a happier note all flowers for mothers day were taken and several people emailed their thanks

This months magazine yet again owes thank you to Keith Atkinson for his contribution including the missing Rector and tales from Northern folk Also included was a picture of vicars in the uniform of the day which I am not sure if James or Shelia would wear it today Did you know that PCCs started a hundred years ago and there is an article from

The Parish Pump by the reverend Peter Crumpler There is a small article on helping hands followed with Valarie Phelps corner There is a word search puzzle to be completed On the rear page there is a service rota There are also two easter prayers

Parish Registers 21 February to 20 March 2021 No entries A missing Rector of Rotherfield Peppard ldquoYou have a section on your website for previous Rectors You are missing my 10th Great Grandfather Richard Tynney 1587-1625rdquo That was the gist of an email which has alerted us to Richard Tynney BA ldquoof Rotherfield Peppard in the County of Oxon clerkerdquo as is stated in his Will The entry for Rotherfield Peppard in the Victoria County History confirms his period at Peppard (1587 ndash 1625) and mentions that ldquosome parishioners evidently took advantage of absentee rectors to avoid paying tithes prompting Richard Tynney to seek remedy in the courtsrdquo The ldquoabsentee rectorsrdquo may have held livings in plurality The List of Rectors on the church website was compiled from the List which hangs in the chancel That original List was the gift of the Revd Wilfred Lewis in 1947 to whom we are greatly indebted The details seem to have been researched by him during World War II That must have been very difficult especially for records of Lincoln Diocese in which Peppard lay prior to 1542 Keith Atkinson The Rising of the North and an organist at Durham In his regular Saturday column in the Daily Telegraph on 13 March Christopher Howse wrote about the impact of the Rising of the North of 1569 The Rising was led by and credited to the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland but the activists were far removed from the earls and ldquothe desire to restore Catholicism was the most important single motive for the rebelsrdquo The big event of the Rising was High Mass in a packed Durham Cathedral on 4 December at which John Brimley master of the choristers played the organ He was organist from 1541 to 1576 through Henry VIIIrsquos final years Edward VI Mary and Elizabeth He is buried in the Galilee Chapel at Durham not far from the Venerable Bede and a splendid epitaph on his grave reads

In September 2015 the Parish Magazine carried a review which I had written of a book by Katharine Tiernan entitled Place of repose It concerned the journey of the monks with the relics of St Cuthbert following the abandonment of Lindisfarne in 875 until they eventually came to rest in 882 at Chester-le-Street At the time I reported that ldquoThe facts are largely drawn from the monk Simeonrsquos History of the Church of Durham (1096) Many of the characters and incidents are historically validrdquo Place of repose has now become the first part of a trilogy following publication of Cuthbert of Farne (2019) and A new heaven and a new earth (2020) ndash ldquoa gripping story of violence heartbreak and redemption that brings the trilogy of novels about [Cuthbert] Northumbriarsquos iconic saint to a dramatic conclusionrdquo The three books are published by Sacristy Press and the third was reviewed in the Church Times in November httpswwwchurchtimescoukarticles202027-novemberbooks-artsbook-reviewsa-new-heaven-and-a-new-earth-by-katharine-tiernan-and-pilgrims-by-matthew-kneale

Mrs Tiernan writes historical fiction with a strong factual basis All three books rely on her cited primary sources which are the writings of the Venerable Bede and of Simeon of Durham I paid tribute to Bede in an article in the Parish Magazine in May 2020 It now seems appropriate to find out about Simeon of Durham of whom I was unaware until reading Katharine Tiernanrsquos books Simeon (or Symeon) (active from c 1090 until after 1129) was an English monk

and historian who embraced the monastic life before the year 1083 in the monastery of

Jarrow and then moved with the rest of the community to Durham in 1095 [the

foundation stone of the Norman cathedral was laid in 1093] He was author of two his-

torical works which are particularly valuable for northern affairs including the De

Exordio Ecclesiae Dunelmen(History of the Church of Durham) The text written

between 1104 and 1108 traces the history of the Church of Durham from its foundation

at the island monastery of Lindisfarne in 635 up to the end of the 11th century

In September 2015 the Parish Magazine carried a review which I had written of a book by Katharine Tiernan entitled Place of repose It concerned the journey of the monks with the relics of St Cuthbert following the abandonment of Lindisfarne in 875 until they eventually came to rest in 882 at Chester-le-Street At the time I reported that ldquoThe facts are largely drawn from the monk Simeonrsquos History of the Church of Durham (1096) Many of the characters and incidents are historically validrdquo Place of repose has now become the first part of a trilogy following publication of Cuthbert of Farne (2019) and A new heaven and a new earth (2020) ndash ldquoa gripping story of violence heartbreak and redemption that brings the trilogy of novels about [Cuthbert] Northumbriarsquos iconic saint to a dramatic conclusionrdquo The three books are published by Sacristy Press and the third was reviewed in the Church Times in November httpswwwchurchtimescoukarticles202027-novemberbooks-artsbook-reviewsa-new-heaven-and-a-new-earth-by-katharine-tiernan-and-pilgrims-by-matthew-kneale

Mrs Tiernan writes historical fiction with a strong factual basis All three books rely on her cited primary sources which are the writings of the Venerable Bede and of Simeon of Durham I paid tribute to Bede in an article in the Parish Magazine in May 2020 It now seems appropriate to find out about Simeon of Durham of whom I was unaware until reading Katharine Tiernanrsquos books Simeon (or Symeon) (active from c 1090 until after 1129) was an English monk

and historian who embraced the monastic life before the year 1083 in the monastery of

Jarrow and then moved with the rest of the community to Durham in 1095 [the

foundation stone of the Norman cathedral was laid in 1093] He was author of two his-

torical works which are particularly valuable for northern affairs including the De

Exordio Ecclesiae Dunelmen(History of the Church of Durham) The text written

between 1104 and 1108 traces the history of the Church of Durham from its foundation

at the island monastery of Lindisfarne in 635 up to the end of the 11th century

The original manuscript is held at the University of Durham in the Library of Bishop Cosin founded in 1669 There are two continuations both anonymous The first carries the history from 1096 to 1129 and the death of Ranulf Flambard the second Norman Bishop of Durham the second extends from 1133 to 1144 Another manuscript held by the University of Cambridge Library contains a third continuation covering the years 1141-1154

About 1129 Simeon undertook to write a Historia regum Anglorum et Dacorum (A history of the Kings of England) This begins at the point where the Ecclesiastical His-tory of Bede ends Up to 957 Simeon merely copied some old Durham annals not oth-erwise preserved which are of value for northern history from that point to 1119 he copied Florence of Worcester with certain interpolations The section dealing with the years 1119 - 1129 is however an independent and practically contemporaneous narra-tive It is said that Simeon writes for his time with ease but his chief merit was that of a diligent collector and copyist

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God to those who are the called according to His purpose Romans 828

When you next attend a PCC meeting which is probably more likely to be by zoom than in person you could say ldquoHappy 100

th Birthdayrdquo to your colleagues It is a hundred

years since The Parochial Church Councils (Powers) Measure 1921 which was an im-portant stage in the birth of PCCs

During the First World War army chaplains found that many men who thought of them-selves as church goers were ignorant of the basics of religion This led to a new interest in mission for the church There were national days of prayer during the war and in 1915 there was a National Mission of Repentance and Hope The public were more in the mood for victory than repentance After the Armistice there was a desire for change in the national church and this led to a discussion about the links with the state

There was a concern that Parliament was often slow to enact laws for the church and many people felt the national church should have more authority to govern itself The setting up of Parochial Church Councils was part of that process In the past a lot of local secular administration had been the responsibility of churchwardens in the vestry meetings Gradually their functions were passed to local councils Most of their remaining powers were transferred to PCCs by The Parochial Church Councils (Powers) Measure 1921

The purpose behind these new councils was to give the laity a more prominent role in parish life to go alongside the deaconry diocesan and national councils which became the synods and have an important role in church life Some conservative clerics were concerned at this reform and felt that congregations would pick and choose clergy or object to a new incumbent chosen by a patron The process of starting PCCs to share in decision making in parishes was widely accepted but a few older incumbents and those in more rural areas failed to do either out of reluctance or ignorance

A leading churchman in the reform movement was William Temple who became leader of the lsquoLife and Liberty movementrsquo which hugely influenced the move towards democ-ratic government in the Church of England He was Bishop of Manchester in the 1920s Archbishop of York from 1929 to 1942 and Archbishop of Canterbury (1942-4)

He had been a secretary of the National Mission of Repentance and Hope in 1916 and became chairman and joint leader with H R (Dick) Sheppard of the Life and Libety movement We demand liberty for the Church of England he declared at a meeting in July 1917 One difficult issue was what level of commitment to church life enabled a person to be eligible to serve on a church council It was decided that anyone on the electoral roll whether they attended services or communion regularly could participate The then Bishop of Oxford resigned over the issue because he thought that councils must only be made up of committed regular communicants

The next Bishop of Oxford in his monthly diocesan magazine endorsed the principle of democracy and reassured people that it was a not negative step or would limit the powers of clergy or wardens He encouraged the congregations to consider how to use each otherrsquos gifts In Aylesbury the idea of the new PCCs had been discussed as early as 1918 It was felt that they would support the clergy particularly with financial issues

It is strange to think that the proposal for clergy and congregation to work together for the benefit of the church could be controversial The birth of PCCs was a major step in the life of the church I wonder what the next one hundred years will bring

This is a famous photograph taken during the 1927 FA Cup final between Cardiff and

Arsenal at Wembley The attendance that day was 91206 and there was little space

between fans The three policemen had been sent from the pitch side to the back of

the stands and the fans allowed them to walk on their shoulders and if you zoom into

the picture you can see hands being offered to steady them I wonder weather such a

thing would happen today

Yes you only have to go down to the surgery to see volunteers helping and

directing people for their vaccinations We are lucky to have such people among us

and todays figure 873784 is a credit to them almost ten times the attendance at this

FA cup final shown in this photo May we always retain that helping hand and reach out

towards others in need

able My father was very philosophical and whatever the weather even it caused

havoc with a special plan it would be suitable for something else Even the disrupting

floods at Shiplake would leave a legacy of rich tilth

Richard Ovey of Badgemore Park the great-grandfather of my old friend Richard

Ovey realized this when backed by Anker Simmons of Simmons he started a

ploughing match at Hernes Thus began the wonderful Henley and District Agricultural

Show in 1892 always held to this day on the second Saturday of September That date

neatly fitted into the rhythm of farming after hay-making and harvest but before drilling

when farmers would enjoy a brief late summer respite and has been missed only during

the two World Wars in 1952 owing to Foot and Mouth Disease and sadly in 2020

Once great excitement was caused by a bull which broke loose from the parade in the

main ring and into the Membersrsquo Enclosure I was 12 then and missed it as I was riding

in a bending race but I remember saying that I hoped the bull wouldnrsquot get into trouble

for going in The Membersrsquo without a badge

About 20 years ago I heard my name called through the loudspeaker My handbag

which I hadnrsquot even missed in all the enjoyment of seeing so many old friends had been

brought to the Secretaryrsquos tent To my relief all the contents were intact It had been

brought in by Mike Huntington ldquoBut I know him we go to the same Churchrdquo

I am so sad to hear he has died He was a very dear friend to many people

A Helping Hand

This is a famous photograph taken during the 1927 FA Cup final between Cardiff and

Arsenal at Wembley The attendance that day was 91206 and there was little space

between fans The three policemen had been sent from the pitch side to the back of

the stands and the fans allowed them to walk on their shoulders and if you zoom into

the picture you can see hands being offered to steady them I wonder weather such a

thing would happen today

Yes you only have to go down to the surgery to see volunteers helping and

directing people for their vaccinations We are lucky to have such people among us

and todays figure 873784 is a credit to them almost ten times the attendance at this

FA cup final shown in this photo May we always retain that helping hand and reach out

towards others in need

winter and day and night shall not ceaserdquo

In the farming world rhythm is crucial It may be slow but it is always steady and reli-

able My father was very philosophical and whatever the weather even it caused

havoc with a special plan it would be suitable for something else Even the disrupting

floods at Shiplake would leave a legacy of rich tilth

Richard Ovey of Badgemore Park the great-grandfather of my old friend Richard

Ovey realized this when backed by Anker Simmons of Simmons he started a

ploughing match at Hernes Thus began the wonderful Henley and District Agricultural

Show in 1892 always held to this day on the second Saturday of September That date

neatly fitted into the rhythm of farming after hay-making and harvest but before drilling

when farmers would enjoy a brief late summer respite and has been missed only during

the two World Wars in 1952 owing to Foot and Mouth Disease and sadly in 2020

Once great excitement was caused by a bull which broke loose from the parade in the

main ring and into the Membersrsquo Enclosure I was 12 then and missed it as I was riding

in a bending race but I remember saying that I hoped the bull wouldnrsquot get into trouble

for going in The Membersrsquo without a badge

About 20 years ago I heard my name called through the loudspeaker My handbag

which I hadnrsquot even missed in all the enjoyment of seeing so many old friends had been

brought to the Secretaryrsquos tent To my relief all the contents were intact It had been

brought in by Mike Huntington ldquoBut I know him we go to the same Churchrdquo

I am so sad to hear he has died He was a very dear friend to many people

How can we thank you for the precious gift of your Son Jesus for His life of obedi-ence and servanthood for His choosing to die that agonising death on a cruel cross so that we can be forgiven and most of all for His death-defeating resurrection on the first Easter morning and the gift of His Spirit to those who put their trust in Him

We canrsquot possibly thank you adequately Lord but we want to try Thank you thank you Father that Jesus our Servant-King is alive Lord of heaven and earth - and yet still serving us so that we too can live and serve

Dear generous loving Father

How can we thank you for the precious gift of your Son Jesus for His life of obedi-ence and servanthood for His choosing to die that agonising death on a cruel cross so that we can be forgiven and most of all for His death-defeating resurrection on the first Easter morning and the gift of His Spirit to those who put their trust in Him

We canrsquot possibly thank you adequately Lord but we want to try Thank you thank you Father that Jesus our Servant-King is alive Lord of heaven and earth - and yet still serving us so that we too can live and serve
