    Student Chapter Updates

    Lipscomb University

During the month ofMarch at Lipscomb, students involved withConcrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, and other competitionsworked hard to refine their projects. Through this finalprocess, students realized that their Concrete Canoewas better than the year and were excited to compete inthis year's competition. Steel Bridge worked until thevery last minute to get things done, but they did! Theydid not get to paint the bridge nor test load it, but thefinal product seemed to meet all the rules for this year.Qualifying for nationals was both teams' objective andboth teams felt that they could do it this year. The next step was to attend conference and achieve ourgoals. Once we arrived, we rested and then the nextday we practiced building our Steel Bridge. We soonrealized that we forgot our piers! Although, this did notstop us from competing. We decided we would shipthem over night for the next day for the loading portionof the Steel Bridge Competition. That same day weheaded to UCF to display our bridge and receiveaesthetics judging. The main judge gave us grace andtold us that not having our piers that day would be okayif we had them the next day. We were grateful for this.

Ultimately, the Southeast ASCE conference was

    Tennessee State University

Tennessee StateUniversityparticipated 2020ASCE AnnualConcrete Canoecompetition (Southeast zone) at Orlando. Under thehelp of Dr. Nathan of TSU and Lipscomb studentchapter, TSU Civil Engineering seniors Wyatt Baxter(captain), Joshua Stokely (co-captain), Daniel Reed,Mina George, Vatsal Patel, and Khalid Alasemdesigned and built the concrete canoe. The efficientleadership and construction experience of Wyatt andDaniel, and the creativity of Joshua, merged with theebullience and design efforts of Mina, Khalid, and Patelto produce a true team effort. The team membersovercame limitations in facilities, equipment, andfunding, while burning midnight oil day after day, especially during the Spring Break as the final daysapproached. They rent a U-haul and towed the canoe toOrlando on 3/13/2020 and was noticed the competitionis cancelled due to COVID-19. However, it is atestimony to their commitment and persistence, and theinspiration from faculty and their Lipscomb peers. Theyhave promised to transfer the knowledge from this hugelearning experience to the next TSU team. Thanks forASCE Nashville Branch support and Specially Thanksto Lipscomb canoe team and their ASCE studentchapter leaders!!
