Namaste,

oga practice assists us to align our internal environment to the natural rhythms and cycles of nature. We can empower Yourselves to find harmony within and balance the qualities evoked by the season. Apart from many other things, the one thing

that we can be very sure about during the summer is the increasing temperatures. Each year, it is getting intolerably warmer. But simple Yoga practices, relaxation and breathing techniques will help us to cool off this summer. Regular practice of Yoga can help

us acclimatise to the summer heat by activating our in-built self-cooling system. This summer, let us be mindful to practice with more

ease, slow our pace and make the most of our breath awareness for a refreshing and revitalizing practice. By consciously living a yogic

lifestyle, we can reduce excess heat on the physical, mental, and emotional levels.

This summer holidays, enrol your children for the Children’s Camp at The Yoga Institute and help them take a break from academics as

well as the digital addiction.

27th April is Dr. Jayadeva’s 90th Birth Anniversary and with profound respect and deep love we remember our Guru who was a great

scholar and a true yogi. Dr Jayadeva, the epitome of modesty, has been the simplest man with bare minimum needs. His article brings to

our awareness about how worldly possessions only generate diminishing returns. Maa Hansaji has candidly shared tidbits about her

marital relationship to throw more light on how Yoga way of living scores a successful marriage.

Practice Shitali (The Cooling Breath) and sip on refreshing Hibiscus tea to stay cool, healthy and happy!

MARRIED LIFE

oga means union. Perhaps a common problem is in realizing the Ymeaning of the word ‘union’ in marriage. As Khalil Gibran says ‘let there be spaces in your togetherness.. love one another but

make not a bond of your love’. The merging of two distinct individuals is such that one should be willing to serve and sacrifice for the life partner, without damaging one’s own individual identity or by inflating one’s ego. Certain emotional stresses may develop due to unmet needs and for these, Yoga presents the concept of ‘Asmita’, where the ego is sublimated instead of clouding right judgment. The individual is encouraged to realize that each one has to play their role in the larger orchestra of life. The ego is thus submerged and a harmonious blending of personalities results.

In deed and leading by example of harmonious householders’ living yoga everyday was Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra. Dr. Jayadeva learnt everything about yoga and harmonious relationships from Founder Shri. Yogendraji who along with Mother Sita lived all the ideals of a truly yogic couple.

Couples and matchmaking was prevalent in those days. I was spirited and was reluctant to parade myself in front of prospective grooms and their parents. Nor was I interested in the boys I happened to meet in college. All I knew was one day I would have to marry.

While studying during social service activity I had a bout of cough and wheezing. It reminded me of my priority and was looking for a cure for this suffering.

One day, it occurred to my father that we consult Shri Yogendra for a cure for my ailment. He took me to The Yoga Institute. I touched Shri Yogendra’s feet sand said, “I want to get rid of my asthma, please help me. What should I do?” Shri Yogendra suggested certain asanas, pranayamas and kriyas. I informed him that I was already doing yoga, and apparently, it had made no difference to my condition. Shri Yogendra told me there was more to yoga than the asanas. He asked me to join the 6 Months Teachers’ Training Course at the Institute.

In those days, classes for the Teacher’s Training Course were conducted by Shri Yogendra, Mother Sita Devi and Dr. Jayadeva. That was how I met Dr. Jayadeva. It was a turning point in my life.

I was eager to learn anything new. If there was something more than asanas, I wanted to know it. Dr. Jayadeva said in class once that one should pay close attention to oneself when being irritated. One day I ‘caught’ my irritation as it formed. I noticed that I was breathing hard. My heart had quickened its pace and breath was coming faster. I also noticed how tensed up I became. Then, an amazing thing happened. My hard breathing began to slow down, the heartbeat returned to normal rhythm, and I found myself slowly but surely relaxing. And wonder of wonders, the irritation was gone!

Slowly but surely I discovered many such lessons in Dr. Jayadeva’s class. Gradually, my asthma and allergies were gone.

I found myself thinking about Dr. Jayadeva, my teacher who made such a vast difference to my life. He was much older, but I hardly noticed. What I did noticed was his serenity, quietude and his penetrating intelligence. Every word he uttered was weighed before it was spoken. I could see how he would attend to various tasks with equal attention - sitting at the front

desk answering queries from newcomers, typing letters, carrying bundles of journals of The Yoga Institute to the post office, starting the water pump and so on. Besides taking classes, he seemed to have a hundred and one things to attend to, but never seemed to be in a hurry; he moved quietly and silently, attending to the work on hand. It occurred to me that the work was done, but he was outside the work being in no way attached to it.

Dr. Jayadeva moves on from the task done without looking back, without any further thought. He does not permit the work done to stick to him.

One day I spoke to Dr. Jayadeva and told him “Please wait after class. I need to talk.” So Dr. Jayadeva waited. I told him “I want to marry you.” He explained life would be very different, but I was determined. I went home and informed my parents who were not in agreement due to the age difference of 18 years. But I was resolute and clear that I wanted to marry Dr. Jayadeva.

Dr. Jayadeva’s brother Vijaydeva and his wife Jill had come down to Bombay from Australia. His brother was given the task of bringing my parents and brothers to the ceremony at the Institute. They did come, but resistance was still there.

I have to say that soon seeing Dr. Jayadeva’s qualities and his dedication and my happiness at my Institute home, they accepted their son-in-law who was a very loving, caring, understanding and very humble human being.

At my Institute home, all were yogis, and I had to learn how to cope with them. Dr. Jayadeva told me once that we should do Nishpanda Bhava and listen and not react. He was truly supportive and looking at his dedication and karma yoga attitude, I was inspired. His sense of duty and intuitive understanding of other people’s problems and his capacity to relate to them and to compassionately help them to solve their problems was a live lesson every day in relationships and holistic living. He never proclaimed himself to be a great Guru but unassumingly gave his time and talents to all.

Together we had seen many challenges and joys of married life, and we thought that we could start a couples class. This couples classes would help couples understand each other and be inspired by yoga’s marvelous teachings of maitri, karuna, mudita, upeksha and from conducting many couples classes, a book “Marriage - a spiritual journey” evolved; I would end by saying that even in his last few minutes before he boarded the heavenly abode, he gave and was happy that the lineage would continue with the birth of his grandson.

lmost all forms of modern yogic practices have their base in AHatha Yoga. It is a common belief that Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are mind-oriented and Hatha yoga is body-oriented.I have

heard people who are teaching or learning yoga saying ”Oh! I don’t teach or learn philosophy, I only teach Hatha Yoga”. Without reading authentic texts on Hatha Yoga, giving such a statement is not correct. None of such forms of yoga or teachers have any textual background.

People think that Hatha Yoga is all about difficult postures but that is not true. A prominent text on Hatha Yoga, Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Swatmaramji is mind-oriented through and through and the techniques of how to get rid of an overactive mind are discussed step by step. He starts with the verse ‘kevalam Rajyogaya’ .ie. Hatha Yoga is for rajyoga (samadhi). Swatmaramji suggests “Sarva chinta vivarjita” - one’s mind should be free of any worries before starting a practice, i.e. work on your mind even while practicing asanas.

Similarly in chapter 1, he is talking about Sadhak and Badhak tattvas. They are obstacles and factors conducive for sadhana, so again he suggests working on the mind. The concept of Mitahara too is a mind control. Before explaining Pranayama, Swatmaramji comes up with the verse “Chale vate chale chittam, nischalm nichle bhavet,” i.e. when the breath is unsteady, the mind is unsteady too and when the breath is steady, the mind attains steadiness. All through these four chapters, there are references of manas, chitta, the stages of samadhi, the absorption of chitta in nad, etc.

Without studying texts, if one thinks that Hatha yogic asanas are the ultimate yoga, it is unfortunate as without understanding the essence, if only techniques are focused on, it is a mere form of exercise. The essence lies in the purpose of yoga, i.e. unfolding the higher realms of consciousness. Hatha Yoga does emphasise purification of the body and asanas but the body here is a medium to go higher spiritually. Yoga can not be just physical; the path may be different but the goal is the same. And Swatmaramji himself, in the fourth chapter of his text, says that “There are practitioners of Hatha Yoga who do not have knowledge of Rajyoga. I consider them mere practitioners as they do not derive fruits for their efforts

ow often have you found your child glued to multiple digital Hscreens and felt helpless about it? Are you concerned about your child’s health, mind and future? After all, temper

tantrums, reduced attention span, lethargy, poor memory, decreased immunity, obesity and junk food cravings are all on the rise these days.

If children continue to be unhappy despite getting everything delivered at lightning speed, it will affect their patience (mind) and blood circulation (blood pressure). A non-content attitude will deviate their focus on unimportant things, making them uncompetitive, physically slower and argumentative, with less appreciation for the environment.

So, let us combat this threat together before it spoils future generations. As an interested reader and a doctor, I find it exciting to decode the principles of our ancestral science of movement and calmness, Yoga, on the human body and mind. Acknowledging the environment, our children should be able to harness the Power of the Sun and accept the Calmness of the Moon by performing Suryanamaskars on waking up and Chandranamaskars at dusk.

Both the salutations are a comprehensive and fun workout for children, comprising of eight powerful postures incorporating breath control, postural movements and meditation. Though elementary, they are an effective form of Yoga for children and can be modified through different intensity levels to get the desired rewards. Children of eight years and above should do the Namaskar series once a day; first slow with about 3-5 repetitions to improve mental skills, and then fast with about 10-15 repetitions to improve cardio fitness.

YOGASATTVA 07

The benefits of Namaskars for children are many, among them the digital detox, reducing digital obsession and improving imagination and creativity. Secondly, they calm the nervous system and increase patience, self awareness, confidence and help overcome stage fright. Done regularly, they also imbibe qualities of humility and respect, even in the very young. They also optimise the metabolism and improve immunity and strength. Last but not least, yoga teaches children to love and embrace themselves, fostering their self-esteem.

In today’s world, we hear so much about being the best and achieving the most. Yoga teaches children that their bodies are different; different bodies do different things and that all of them are okay. As Swami Satyananda Saraswati says: “The destiny of the whole world depends on little children. If you want to see the silver lining on the horizon it is not you and me, but children who have to be spiritualised.”

Q: How did you learn about The Yoga Institute?

A: I didn’t think much about yoga initially back in the early nineties. Luckily, I had good neighbours who saw me much stressed and would suggest joining yoga. I would think yoga isn’t for me. One day my neighbour pre-paid my yoga session fees and said now it would be my wish to join or not. Curiosity got the better of me, and I went. The yoga teacher was from The Yoga Institute, and I felt good within the first month itself. I wanted to learn more, and my teacher mentioned the Institute at Santacruz. So in 1991 I went to attend Satsang at the Institute and topic was AVAV. I was drawn in and completely hooked.

Till date, I remember the lesson learnt the first day. Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra and Smt. Hansaji Yogendra’s householder yoga and Satsang made complete sense to me, and I eagerly joined.

Q: State your present family responsibilities and ailment

A: An ailing mother, 87 years old, my wife & daughter. My daughter is married. For the past three years, my mother has been completely bedridden. The doctors have advised not to move her from the bed due to spinal deterioration. However, with Smt. Hansaji’s guidance and blessings, yoga is helping me cope and take better care of my mother. I move her cautiously so that she is able to enjoy the sea view.

Q: Is there a family history of any other disease? Please share the particulars.

A: I lost my dad to cancer. He was a chain smoker. My dad expired when I was very young studying in tenth grade for SSC. That’s why I discontinued my education and started taking care of household responsibilities.

Q: How have you benefited from Yoga and The Yoga Institute (TYI)?

A: It is a place of reverence and a temple for me. I receive guidance and support on all fronts, be they business matters, family issues, health

matters or my daughter’s marriage. At one point in time, I was going to give up on my business because it was not working out. I was feeling tired, exhausted and worried all the time. Then I spoke to Dr. Jayadeva who then suggested time management and I followed the guidance given. Shavasana and pranayama benefitted me immensely. I learnt a lot; everything from time management and maintaining a balanced state of mind to business skills, etc. Dr. Jayadeva was a true yogi and great teacher. Whenever I had any problem, I would ask him and he would give advice or write on a piece of paper, and it worked every single time.

One time, I asked ‘I worry a lot. How to stop that?’. Dr. Jayadeva wrote on a chit “Nachint” (do not worry). He then taught me ways to discipline myself and manage my finances. So I went home and applied the monetary discipline taught to me. I reduced my staff, took up extra hours and curtailed wasteful expenditures. I also diligently wrote ten positive points every day.

Attending early-morning Parisamvad became a ritual. The place itself has so much positive vibes and getting Guru’s blessings every day changed me. It took discipline and work to transform myself. I have borderline hypertension and minimum medication. But today I can manage everything adequately. Guru’s blessings early morning everyday, it’s an experience that cannot be put into words.

Q: Any Additional information or experience, please share

A: One experience would like to share. A famous politician offered a bribe of one Lac per month on learning that I was from The Yoga Institute and Dr. Jayadeva’s student. He understood what would be my answer. He smiled and withdrew. I was grateful, and by then even I knew the answer. Both smiled and parted.

In 2016, I met Dr. Jayadeva seeking his blessings and advice. I remember his words even today very clearly, no suggestions. “You are doing fine, keep at it!”

That’s Dr Jayadeva for you - always available, no matter how small or big your problem. He would never turn his back for anything. I got more than I imagined or asked for!

t looks very strange, but true, that the more we have of things, the Iless we want them. We reach a saturation point, somewhere along the line, when we indulge in having more of material things. In fact,

we cannot have too much of even good things, specially when the good things happen to be of this material world. All worldly objects have their inbuilt limitation. They of their own do not contribute to the total or inner development of man. Accumulation of more and more material things is not commensurate with man’s fullest or ultimate evolution.

Our desires for material possessions lead us to much travail and suffering. But it is also true that such possessions have their own limited merits. Worldly possessions also have an inbuilt capacity to cause us disenchantment. We are no doubt drawn by the glitter and glamour of material objects. We identify ourselves totally with them, wanting to possess them for all time. But this act of ours ends up finally in our disillusionment and disenchantment. When we consider the effort it takes to possess things, and the trouble in maintaining them, and the further suffering when we have to part with them, we realize that it would have been better if we did not have the things right from the beginning. Had we not been drawn to these material things, and had we not possessed them in abundance, we would not have reached this saturation point, to feel disenchanted about them. So in one sense, however painful it may appear, material things in a different context become very necessary objects for our own growth and development. Life is a large training school and we should not feel unhappy about being here. As Tolstoy rightly said, “We must remind ourselves as often as possible that our true life is not this external, material life that passes before our eyes here on earth, but that it is the inner life of our spirit, for which the visible serves as a scaffolding, a necessary aid to our spiritual growth”.

Unfortunately, such wise statements do not of their own lead to disinterest towards worldly things. In fact, the world of ours, consisting of different objects and different relationships, provides us an endless series of attraction. We just cannot see through this game of material life.

One may get a sense of boredom or disenchantment for a little while for a particular experience, but the very next moment, one would again get attracted to another object or relationship, believing that in this latter case we would not have to face the unpleasantness of the earlier experiences. It takes a lot of beating for a foolish man to realize the worthlessness of material existence and objects. The wise man, however, does not need to pass through so much suffering. He is a sensitive soul and can see through the untenability of material life, during his very early encounters.

What is true in commerce and economics is also true in spiritual life, viz., adding more and more of variables to a constant factor brings about diminishing returns. It is only that in spiritual life even the very first addition of a material object becomes a germ for the rise of disinterestedness. Material life is there for us for bhoga (enjoyment) as well as apavarga (absolute deliverance).

YOGA IS THESOLUTION

YOGASATTVA 24

Today’s world is struggling and the solution is yoga. Yoga is our age-old culture; the whole world is adopting this practice. Yoga is one such skill that helps the mind, body and soul in union with

nature. The two-day Harmony Fest celebrations of The Yoga Institute in Mumbai are a combination of in-depth knowledge, hard work, effort, devotion and dedication that produced extraordinary transformation and changed lives. My heartiest congratulations for the fantastic programme put together. We applaud the tremendous efforts of Founder Shri Yogendraji, Mother Sita Devi, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra & Dr. Hansaji Yogendra to spread the goodness of yoga done for the past hundred years.

A life school was designed by Shri Yogendraji to propagate yoga as a way of living. Yoga is an invaluable gift from ancient India; it’s our culture, our Sanskriti and tradition. We need to preserve it. One hundred years celebrations have united the yoga fraternity, and we should work on the PM’s noble path of “Sabke Saath Sab Ka Vikas.”

Today, more than 55,000 professionally trained yoga teachers in over 120 countries across the world have been spreading the goodness of yoga and promoting holistic health to millions of lives, both locally and globally.

Smt. Hansaji is a remarkable yoga guru and the only woman yoga guru to be invited by Hon. Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi to share the stage at the first International Day of Yoga in 2015.

For 100 years, The Yoga Institute has transformed the lives of millions of people through various social initiatives like Annam Brahma and regular Yoga sessions for differently-abled children, marginalised communities, especially women and children, the LGBTQ community, and many more.

His Excellency, Shri Ramnath Kovind, the President of India, gracing the occasion is very fitting. This festival has so many beautiful events, I am pleased to be a part of it.

The Yoga Institute has contributed immensely to spreading the good cause of Yoga; I humbly request Smt Hansaji to make us a part of this yoga journey and accept our contribution as well.

So enjoy, all the best to the Institute, and we wish them the very best for many more decades to come.

Yoga is a technology – a very very advanced technology to attain and to realise the immensity of being human. So please take up Yoga like I do and many of my friends, to attain the maximum balance of body, mind and soul. The Yoga Institute is doing a great job. And I congratulate The Yoga Institute on completing 100 years.

Way back in 1970’s I was suffering from backache and decided to take up Yoga. The founder Shri Yogendra Ji used to be there that time, under his guidance I started doingYoga and I had good relief. The disciplines taught by founder are still so fresh. I’ve known Hansaji ben since her childhood and it feels so great to see her as national personality. The Yoga Institute has played a vital role in popularising Yoga. I congratulate them on completing 100 years.

The Yoga Institute is my karma Bhoomi. The length and breadth of accumulated knowledge from books supplemented with a third dimension of depth after associating with TYI from year 1976. Learning and interacting with Founder (Shri Yogendraji ) was a rare privilege that continues to provide inspiration till date. Soon after completing the TTC, on the advice of Dr. J., I stopped buying books, reading books and finally distributed most of stocks of books at home. Then I got associated in administration of TYI and IBY. On encouragement from Dr. J., I kept writing articles for the monthly journal.I learned from participating in study groups and the publication of the cyclopaedia and books. Ever grateful for the guidance and counselling by Dr. J. and Hansaji during my emotional turmoil and making me a believer in God. All the blessings from TYI continues in making my old age phase fruitful and rewarding.

TESTIMONIALS

July 2018 happened to be one of my biggest life altering moments, one that was completely unforeseen and unplanned; the kind that only happens because it is destined. I arrived at The Yoga Institute, believing that I would do some Yoga (Asanas!) and be able to find some much needed peace of mind. But what I found was so much more, a whole new direction to my life.

My journey started with a Basic and Advanced Teachers Training Courses, internship, understudy programme and teaching assignments which bring their own learning along. I feel fortunate to be here amidst such a positive and nurturing environment, which is not just creating opportunities for me to spread the goodness of Yoga but also teaching me to live my own life with a sense of purpose and harmony. Seeing and interacting with Hansa Ma has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance for me whi le having the mentorship of the highly competent teachers truly enriches my learning experience. Be it the institute campus, its people or the vibration of this place, the one word I attribute to it is - beautiful! Come visit us to experience it for yourself.

“I attended the inaugural lecture given by Hansaji and was really impressed. I joined the classes immediately, run by Rohan Sheth and Brinda Sheth from the first day. I always thought that Yoga was an ok ok exercise and gymming was always a better option. But after attending the Yoga classes, I feel Yoga is more effective and necessary. The classes are very efficiently conducted by our teacher. I underwent an angioplasty of my heart three years ago, wherein one stent was fitted. After attending regular classes for the last six months under the able guidance of Hiralben, our Yoga teacher, I can proudly say that the heaviness that I used to feel in my chest has gone away and I feel much much better. Thank you to Rohan ji & Brinda ji.

Studying and living at The Yoga Institute for 3 months was a life changing experience for me. Before coming to TYI, my yoga practice was sporadic and undisciplined, and I had only very basic knowledge of the philosophy of Yoga.

So, I arrived at TYI hoping to deepen my knowledge on Yoga and to learn the practical tools to follow Yoga as a way of life - The Institute did not disappoint.

The course was very comprehensive and the calibre of the teachers high. There was always someone to turn to with any questions we had or to give advice.

It’s not an easy course and requires a lot of self-discipline but like anything, you get out what you put in. I’m so grateful to The Yoga Institute for offering such profound teachings on Yoga – the 3-month TTC is a course that everyone should do!

Shri Yogendraji - Father ofModern Yoga Renaissance

So a student of yoga should not get stuck at some little thing, which he wanted and he got, like curing his head-ache, if he stops there, he has no interest in yoga. His study of Yoga was simply a process of utility, he was looking for some treatment or a cure. But a real student of Yoga, aspires that for the expansion of consciousness; at that stage he is much more aware. How far does he want to go, he is afraid of the highest? Are his legs weak, he must get the strength in the legs, go up at the highest so that he can see in a perspective from an objective point of view everything. That becomes his ideal. The student of Yoga who will study becomes his ideal. The student of Yoga who will study Yoga, he must have that ambition for going as high as possible.
