The Incarnation Word 1
As Easter approaches, you’re probably looking for fun Easter crafts to do for yourself and your children. Dyeing Easter eggs is always a fun tradition - but do you know where it comes from? The symbol of the egg has its roots in pa-gan traditions. The Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Persians celebrated the festival of Spring in honor of Eastre or Easter, the goddess of spring. The egg was a symbol of the earth and the life that comes forth in springtime after a winter of barrenness. The Chinese are thought to be the first people to color eggs, dating back to 1000 BCE.
The tradition of hiding eggs de-veloped much later, in Europe. Early folktales tell us that a German duch-ess decorated eggs and hid them in the tall grass. She invit-ed children to find the eggs, and she told them that the
eggs had been left by a rabbit. The Easter bunny still visits many countries today.
Today Easter eggs serve as colorful re-minders of the new life that we all have because of Jesus’ death and resurrection. If you choose to dye Easter eggs this year, consider adding a fun touch. After the dyed eggs have dried, add onto them sym-bols of the Easter season. Try a cross, a flower, a butterfly, “He is Risen,” or any-thing else. You can add your symbols with fun markers or glitter glue pens. If you’re really daring, draw your de-signs with white glue and roll them in bowls of glitter - they’ll really sparkle!! Dyeing eggs together gives families a great chance to talk about what Easter is really all about and why it makes a difference in our lives. Share your stories with the little ones in your life. Help them think of their own “resurrection” moments. And think together about what symbols you can put on eggs to remember those moments. Have a blessed Holy Week and Happy Easter!

2 The Incarnation Word
Palm Sunday Sunday, April 14
On this day we begin each service with the Liturgy of the Palms outdoors (weather per-mitting). We’ll ask God to bless the branches of palm and then
we’ll wave them and shout “Hosanna” as we recall Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The tone changes as we hear a dramatic reading of the entire passion gospel taking us through the events of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and death on the cross. Our schedule for the day will be:
8:30 Liturgy of the Palms and Holy Eucharist Rite I 10:00 Interdenominational Liturgy of the Palms and Procession 10:30 Holy Eucharist Rite II
And so we begin the journey to the cross.
Wednesdays Lenten Activities April 3 and 10 Wednesday evenings are full of ways to grow in our knowledge and love of God—and the activities are perfect for kids of all ages! 5:30pm - Kids’ Choir Practice
The children will practice the anthems they’ll sing during the 10:30 Sunday services in Lent. 6:00pm - Supper
We’ll share a simple meal of soup and sandwiches. There are still open spots in this month’s schedule if you’d like to bring all or part of a meal. Check out the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the hallway.
6:30pm Worship
We continue learning to PAUSE during each day to talk with God. Each week we’ll add to our string of Prayer Beads and learn a new way of using them to draw closer to God. Kids and adults alike will be challenged to make daily prayer a meaningful, life-long, and fun habit!
The Incarnation Word 3
Maundy Thursday Agape Meal , Passover Eucharist, and Stripping of the Altar Thursday, April 18 at 6:30pm
We begin this evening with an Agape Meal, a shared feast of love. Bring your of-fering of bread, cheese, fruit, or olives and wine or grape juice. We’ll gather in the
hallway and feast together. Our service places Jesus’ Last Supper in its context as a Pass-over meal. We’ll talk through the steps of the seder, noting at which points Jesus gave new meaning to the bread and wine. And we’ll share the Eucharist just as Jesus’ original disciples did that night. As the meal ends, we’ll remember Jesus’ arrest and torment by stripping the altar.
Good Friday Interdenominational Service Friday, April 19 at Noon
We’ll gather at Incarnation with our brothers and sisters from Limestone Presbyterian, Buford Street United Method-ist, and St. Paul’s Lutheran to mark the day of Jesus’ death.
We’ll hear John’s version of the passion gospel, pray together about our complicity in Jesus’ death, and make our devotions at his cross.
Good Friday Tenebrae Friday, April 19 at 6:30pm
Tenebrae is the Service of Shadows. We’ll hear read-ings and meditations based on the Seven Last Words Jesus uttered from the cross. With each word, the light of
Christ will be snuffed and another nail driv-en into the cross. After the final word, there will be time for each of us to come make our devotions at the cross, either by praying silently or by driving another nail in. The service ends in silence.
Holy Saturday Altar Guild Saturday, April 20 at 10:00 am If you aren’t helping at Bread from Heaven this morning, come join the Altar Guild as they polish and iron and arrange lilies all to make our Easter service spectacular.
Easter Day Festive Choral Eucharist, Covered-Dish Brunch, and Easter Egg Hunt Sunday, April 21 at 10:00am We’ll celebrate Christ’s resurrection in one glorious service all together. There will be sweet-smelling lilies, floating banners, bells to ring out on the “Alleluias,” and a fun, interactive sermon. Afterward we’ll share a covered dish brunch together, so be sure to bring something to share. And while the adults linger over dessert, the children will
run around the play-ground hunting for Easter eggs. Be sure to bring your child’s Easter basket to hold their loot!
Easter Egg Stuffings We have plenty of plastic eggs for the little ones to hunt, but we need goodies to put in them. When you’re shopping, please be on the lookout for wrapped candy that won’t melt in the hot sun or small toys, stickers, or other goodies. You can drop them by the

church office any time between now and Palm Sunday, April 14. And thanks for making the day even more special for our children!
Easter Lilies We’ll surround our altar with beautiful potted East-er lilies as symbols of the new life Jesus brings us on Easter. These can be purchased in memory of a loved-one no longer with us or in honor of someone or some event that’s spe-cial to you. Simply sign up on the bulletin board in
the hallway and make your check for $25 per plant payable to Incarnation with “lilies” in the memo line. You can drop your check in the plate or bring it by the office any time! The lilies will be yours to take home after the service Easter Sunday.
Holy Baptism Sunday, April 28 at 10:30 Julia Johnson will be bap-tized at the 10:30 service on the Sunday after Easter. Join us as we welcome our newest baby sister into the Christian family, and cele-brate with her family at a reception after the service.

Outdoor Work Day Saturday, April 6 9:00-12:00 We’ll gather to spruce up our grounds for Easter. Come ready to weed flower beds, spread mulch, trim hedges, and clear leaves. Bring gloves and whatever tools you think we’ll need. It’s sure to be a fun and busy day - and won’t it feel great to be out-side?!
