Training & Development

2019 April Monthly Report Training & Development

The Safety training in March was on Air Quality: Asbestos and Mold

Awareneness. Employees learned what to do if they think they have

encountered mold or asbestos.

Supervisors focused on customer service with training on the topic of

“Speed of Service”. Employees learned the importance of working well as a team in order to get

what the customer needs in a timely manner. Training is a refresher and helps remind all employ-

ees of the importance of customer service.

Job specific training methods of the week covered stripping hard surface floors, top scrubbing hard

surface floors, floor machine pad assignment, and carpet extraction. Supervisors trained their em-

ployees on these topics to enhance their skills on job specific tasks.

The following was the training for the month of April.

APRIL BRINGS SHOWERS OF EDUCATIONAL & OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

Arbor Day Every April, WKU partners with the City of Bowling Green to host Arbor Day, a day of celebrating trees!

While educating attendees about proper tree care practices and tree characteristics, WKU handed out

1,500 trees of the following four varieties: Sugar Maple, Green Giant Arborvitae, Catalpa, and Eastern Red-

bud.

Earth Day WKU’s Earth Day Celebration is one of the most highly attended

events on campus. The Student Government Association Sustainability

Committee coordinates this successful event, complete with entertain-

ment, local food, and Big Red (left)! Despite having to move the event

indoors due to inclement weather, over fifty community partners, Uni-

versity departments, and student organizations filled Downing Student

Union with hands-on activities designed to promote environmental

sustainability and social justice; highlights include WKU Public Rela-

tions students’ “Recycling Rodeo,” Community Farmers Market’s local

foods tasting, and the Staff Sustainability Committee’s Office Supply

Swap.

Driving Performance Grounds

With Spring comes “weeds” and with weeds comes the

dreaded “dandelions”. The department has put in place a 4

round fertilization/herbicide program to help eliminate the

weeds and promote strong, lush turf around campus. In

April our contractor came onto campus to apply a pre-

emergent/fertilizer mix on all turf areas, athletic fields, and

south campus locations. Round #2 is scheduled for May as

soon as the semester is over.

The department upgraded our riding mowers this year to

John Deere 950M zero turn mowers. Last summer the de-

partment demoed several different makes and models, and

this was the one the crew decided they liked best. We bought two last year and

three additional mowers this year. We still have three more to go which will be

purchased next FY. Along with new mowers, we added some new weed eaters

and push mowers to our inventory. Several of our weed eaters and push mow-

ers were not operating correctly as we began our spring startup of all equipment.

Annual beds have been changed from winter to summer.
