1st birthday celebrations at Chestnut Tree House Goring Road shop

April 2018

We recently celebrated our Goring Road shop’s 1st anniversary with a party. We were delighted that the Mayor of Worthing, Councillor Alex Harman, attended together with staff, volunteers, customers and supporters.

Chestnut Tree House Trustee, Stephen Hollamby, welcomed everyone to the event and thanked the local community for their generosity and support for the shop since it opened last April.

In the last year, the shop team have processed and sold over 25,000 items that were generously donated by local residents. A quarter of these items were gift aided, meaning an extra 25p for every £1 pound donated. Since opening, the shop has raised enough funds to enable 38 children to spend a night at Chestnut Tree House, to receive specialist care and symptom management from our nursing team and to enjoy the facilities which the hospice offers. Everyone enjoyed refreshments and the stunning teddy bear birthday cake

made by our Retail Area Manager, Karen Bentley. The cake was cut by the Mayor and Shop Manager, Nichola Lambert, helped by Sidney the Squirrel, our Chestnut Tree House mascot.

The Goring shop is situated at 18 Goring Road, Worthing, and stocks general items of clothing, accessories, bric-a-brac, small electricals, books and homeware.

It also has an exciting children’s department with clothing, toys and games to appeal to families in the local area.

Neil Blanchard originally qualified as a chartered surveyor and worked for a number of years in commercial property development and management. He’s been the Chief Executive at Southdown Housing

Association since 2014, previously having worked for the organisation in senior management roles since 2001. Southdown is a not-for-profit Sussex-based organisation that supports over 10,000 vulnerable clients each year to overcome situations that are placing their health, housing and wellbeing at risk.

In addition to his role within Southdown, Neil is committed to taking an active role to help shape and influence the wider social care sector. He’s a member of the National Housing Federation’s Health and Housing group which supports the development of new policy ideas across health, care and support. At a local level he participates in a range of networks and working groups as part of the integration of health and social care services, and acts as a representative on the Sussex and East Surrey NHS Sustainability and Transformation Partnership’s (STP) Engagement and Equalities Reference Group. The group provides oversight, assurance, advice and positive challenge to ensure patients’ and carers’ views are adequately taken into account in governance and decision-making processes.

During the 1990s, Neil spent ten years volunteering as

A warm welcome to our new Trusteesa befriender and trainer to support people with HIV and Aids. Through this experience he developed a strong commitment to advocate on behalf of excellent end of life care, and is looking forward to continuing this work at St Barnabas Hospices.

Stephen Hollamby qualified as a solicitor in 1987. His legal experience started in the magistrates’ court in Havant and then Worthing, and in 1990 he moved to Bennett Griffin solicitors in

Worthing. Stephen was a member of the Law Society’s Children Panel for many years and represented children and parents in court in Care Proceedings. In 2004 Stephen combined that role with Managing Partner of Bennett Griffin. Stephen has now ceased his court work and is Risk and Compliance Partner at Bennett Griffin, advising the Partnership and staff on all regulatory and legal matters affecting the firm.

Stephen has been married for 35 years, with two children and two grandchildren (so far!). His additional loves are Southampton FC and England and he hopes that one day in his lifetime England will win the world cup again as he does not recall 1966! Stephen is very keen to assist St Barnabas Hospices in any way possible to ensure the future is as bright as the past in caring for those and their families going through very difficult times at the end of their loved one’s lives.

Congratulations to Kerry

Dying Matters Week 14-20 May 2018

Staff a nd volu nteer n ews

Looking after your health and wellbeing

Our team of slimmers are progressing brilliantly with weight loss achieved by all 21 staff. Special praise to three members who have broken through the one stone barrier. Please keep weighing in each week even if you think you’ve gained a few pounds – Liz Ibrahim (Occupational Health Manager) can motivate you to get back on track. With the Summer and holiday season fast approaching, new joiners are always welcome.

Next month is Dying Matters Week which aims to help people talk about death, dying, bereavement and making plans for end of life.

There will be an information stand, located at the top of the front stairs at St Barnabas House, with information from Dying Matters, including what happens to your online items when you die, as well as a chance to get involved by writing five things you want to do before you die. Look out for posters on display around the hospice and join us for a special Tea at Three on 16 May at 3pm to learn more about Dying Matters.

The Hospice Outreach Project Team are also getting involved, and members of the public will be able to take part by writing on the ‘before I die’ chalkboard or hanging ‘words left unsaid’ on a washing line.

Your Agony Aunt column from Data Protection Doris Dear readers, I have been so thrilled since the last Bulletin to receive your data protection questions to answer in this column.

Just a reminder about the beauty of data protection. We are a very caring organisation and data protection is well named – it means caring about what happens to a person’s data when they have given it to St Barnabas or Chestnut Tree. It means protecting their data. It could be medical information, contact details, bank account or credit card numbers, or just their name and address, or year of birth. They have given us that data to look after and we will care about it as much as we care about their health, wellbeing or happiness. We will protect all their data and use it carefully and sensibly to make sure their total experience with the hospices is the best it possibly can be.

Last month, I promised to tell you about GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations). These regulations are new and they come into force at the end of May 2018. GDPR is an all-round tightening up of data protection and I know that you will be offered training on this topic and you will love it! It’s also a great opportunity for everyone in our organisation to make doubly sure they are being very careful with all kinds of personal data given to us by staff, volunteers, patients, families, donors, supporters, health care professionals etc.

All the best, until next timeDoris x

Question: I work at Chestnut Tree House and people sometimes call and want to donate over the phone by credit card. Is it ok to scribble their details down on a post-it note and pass to fundraising?

Answer: No it is really not ok. There is a form available specifically for this purpose, if you can’t find the form, take their phone number and we will call them back. Use the form because the form has data protection questions built in. There are also rules about what you must do with the form when completed, after the phone call – it’s sensitive because it contains credit card details and we must protect that information.

Question: What causes a data protection breach?

Answer: Lots of everyday things can lead to a breach, here are a few to be aware of:• Accidentally disclosing sensitive data, for example a personal medical file getting mixed up with other papers.• Inappropriate access to sensitive data, for example a fundraiser being able to access all the HR records• Loss or theft of paper records or of portable devices (eg. USB stick) containing sensitive information• A breach of IT security (like sharing a password) could potentially lead to a data protection breach•Unauthorised access – someone hacking into our Lottery or medical files• Confidential information or personal details being left unlocked on a desk• Not disposing of confidential papers properly.

Question: GDPR – I’ve heard of it – it’s just a fundraising thing isn’t it?

Answer: No it applies to all types of data processing, not just donors but also including volunteers, staff and our beneficiaries (patients, families, children).

Question: What should I do if I think there might have been a data protection breach?

Answer: Tell your Manager and Director immediately. If a breach has occurred, we have 72 hours to report it to the Information Commissioner (ICO).

Question: I work in a St Barnabas shop and we work very hard to sign up stock donating customers to Gift Aid. When they fill in the form, customers often ask what we are going to do with their name and address and whether they will be inundated with brochures. What should we say in response?

Answer: The next version of the form will say what we are going to do with their data in the future. In this case, the customer’s data will only ever be used in relation to their Retail Gift Aid claim. The data will not be shared internally with Fundraising or Marketing. The only communications the customer will receive will come from our Finance Department who have to write to customers occasionally for administrative purposes about the monies raised through Gift Aid in the shops.

Join in the joy, feel the love and send Doris your data protection questions c/[email protected]

Relaunching the Walk of LifeThe Walk of Life welcomes patients and visitors to the hospice and is a celebration of love, life, family and friends. A pathway, made up of many thousands of pavers with personal messages, each paver not only gives hope and inspiration, but also helps continue to provide hospice care for our community with a donation to St Barnabas House.

This year, we have a new supplier, and a new programme of cleaning so the Walk of Life pathway will always look its best. The cost of some of the pavers has increased and the new prices will be published in May. In the meantime, if you would like to register your interest in receiving the updated brochure please contact our Fundraising Team on 01903 254777 or email [email protected]

Doreen Harbour who purchased a stone in memory of her daughter Jeanette Baker said:

“The staff and volunteers gave Jeanette the best quality of life she could have had during her illness and nurtured her young sons, Bradley and Connor. Over Christmas 2015, staff gave up their leave on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day to drive Jeanette home to Littlehampton to be with her family. It was wonderful for us all and we are indebted to St Barnabas House forever. We all feel ‘part of the family’ when we visit St Barnabas House and especially love the café so it is perfect to have this permanent family memento here. We trust the inscription will also give hope and strength to others.”

“I f ind it really rewarding to be able to make someone happy by doing their hair. It brightens up their day and makes them feel so much better about themselves. A lot of patients on oxygen can’t get out to the hairdresser so this is a lot easier for them.”

We’re thrilled to have hundreds of walkers already registered to walk through the night for St Barnabas House on Saturday 30 June in our annual Night to Remember midnight walk. With men and children aged 10 and over now welcome to join our ladies, we think this could be our biggest and best Night to Remember ever! Starting at 10.30am, our walkers can choose to walk 7, 13.1 or 20 miles from Worthing Leisure Centre, through the streets of Worthing and along the seafront. Make sure you get your family, friends and colleagues to register a team for this, one of our flagship events.www.stbh.org.uk/nighttoremember

Tackling single use plastics at St Barnabas HouseDid you know?

• Our coffee shop and vending cups are made of recyclable paper.• We are using biodegradable straws on the IPU, the Day Hospice and the coffee shop.• There are no longer plastic stirrers in the coffee shop and we are phasing out their use in the ward lounges. • We are phasing out the use of plastic drinking cups, and are looking for new alternatives.

Night to Remember is the biggest event for St Barnabas and we need over 200 volunteers to help us on the night. Roles include marshalling, handing out refreshments, serving breakfast, car park volunteers and our all-important finish line cheering squad.

If you’re able to volunteer or know someone who can, please complete the form on our website www.stbh.org.uk/volunteer-at-n2r or email [email protected]. Even if it’s just for a couple of hours, we’d be very grateful for your help.

Daffodils come out to celebrate our 15th birthdayTo celebrate Chestnut Tree House’s 15th birthday, one of our long-term corporate supporters, Gatwick Airport, donated some daffodil bulbs for a very special project in our garden. In October, a team from Gatwick visited the House and spent a day planting hundreds of bulbs in the shape of ‘15’. Spring has finally sprung and here is the result! We would like to thank the team at Gatwick Airport for helping us to make this happen, and for their ongoing support.

Going wild with RepTylersEarlier this month, children at Chestnut Tree House were treated to a special visit from the team at RepTylers. Everyone had lots of fun saying hello to Pandora the Burmese python, Pooh the skinnypig, Mr Fruitella the panther chameleon, and all their friends!

Thank you very much to Burgess Hill & District Rotary Club for so generously funding this activity!

Votes fly in for Chestnut Tree HouseThe East Sussex Team at Chestnut Tree House is thrilled to announce that we’ve been voted as the ‘People’s Charity’ for Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow this August. A huge and heartfelt thank you to all our staff and volunteers who voted for us.

This amazing opportunity will help us raise awareness and vital funds for the charity. Chestnut Tree House will receive a percentage of the money collected at Airbourne. We look forward to seeing everyone at the show which runs from Thursday 16 - Sunday 19 August. If you would like to volunteer at the event, please call Abi Harley on 01323 725095.

Minehead to Newquay for Trustee Neil Gatley

Trustee Neil Gatley is taking on the challenge of walking from Minehead to Newquay for Chestnut Tree House.

Neil started his career in the food and pharmaceutical industries, working for Thorn EMI as a Group Personnel Manager prior to establishing

his own HR consultancy, supplying advice and guidance to a range of employers. A Corporate Fellow of the C.I.P.D., Neil specialises in UK employment law. He is also a qualified and experienced health and safety advisor.

Art and happy memories at the Jerwood GalleryOn Monday 9 April, children and families were treated to a day at the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings, thanks to a three year partnership with Children and the Arts. The children we care for, their siblings and families had the chance to meet some wolves before listening to stories, making music and creating their own wolf-themed artwork. They also had the opportunity to explore the galleries at the Jerwood, which were closed to the public for the day.

One parent commented, “It’s amazing to be able to come somewhere where there is plenty to do, it’s not too crowded, not too noisy, all of which would have a bad effect on Liam. We’re really grateful for events like this.”

Neil said: “I was delighted recently to be invited to become a Trustee of St Barnabas Hospices. Over the years I have completed most of the long distance National Trails in England with the exception of the South West Coast Path, west of Falmouth. As I approach my dotage my plan now is to begin at the official start point - Minehead - and to then last the distance carrying a full backpack, staying at a combination of campsites, B&B’s and a youth hostel. The official distance is 190 miles but I reckon on covering at least 200 with deviations to visit attractive hostelries, campsites etc. My fundraising target is £2,000.”

A very special letterRecently we had a donation from a lovely young girl, who decided, with no encouragement from her family, to give her Easter money to St Barnabas House in memory of her grandfather, Alan. Jess and her family have kindly allowed us to share her touching letter.

The Big Get Together Since launching in 2016, The Big Get Together has raised an incredible £12,000. Thank you to all our wonderful participants.

We’re inviting you all to be part of The Big Get Together again this year. It’s really simple. Just get together with friends, family, neighbours or colleagues and hold a barbeque, coffee morning, garden party or try out your own unique ideas. It’s the perfect way to celebrate a loved one on a special date or anniversary.

Last year, Steve and Debbie Brattle held a Mexican themed garden party with their friends and family to remember

Debbie’s father and sister. They had a great evening with a quiz, cocktails and fancy dress.

Rustington resident, Harry Finnigan, will take on some of the renowned Tour de France stages this summer as he rides from London to Geneva in memory of his grandfather, who was cared for by St Barnabas House.

Harry, who turns 30 in April, will be cycling 644 miles across southern England and northern France for 10 days, from Wednesday 25 July to Friday 3 August. His grandfather, John Crammond was referred to St Barnabas by the Cardiac Unit at Worthing Hospital

with Advanced Heart Failure. John was assigned our Advanced Heart Failure Nurse, Michaela Wheatley, who joined the team in 2016 and has provided specialist support for over 150 people with Advanced Heart Failure since then.

Harry said: “Michaela visited Grandpa at home and went through some very difficult questions with my mum, aunt and Grandpa to ensure his wishes were met. She was with us the whole way until he died.”

“She sorted out medication when our surgery said it would take seven days, but he needed it urgently, she chased up the district nurses when communication was not happening and she gave us numbers of people to help with getting him a special bed, commode and frames into his house.”

Francesca and John Roberts have set off on a challenge of a lifetime as they take on a 2,660 mile trek from Mexico to Canada this summer. The couple are hoping to raise over £10,000 for St Barnabas where Francesca’s father, Ian Aitken, who lived in Worthing, spent his final weeks in February 2017.

Francesca and John are walking the full length of the Pacific Crest Trail; setting off from Campo in Southern California at the Mexican border in April, they are hoping to reach the finishing point at Manning Park on the Canadian border 173 days later in September. Their journey will include 20 days of trekking in the mountains as they take a detour to climb Mount Whitney, the highest point in California at 14,505ft.

“My husband and I married on 1 September 2016, which I think was one of my dad’s favourite days. Looking back at the pictures and videos of him walking down the aisle, the smile on his face, is priceless. Unfortunately, the next time we saw him when we got back from our honeymoon, he was given the news that he had terminal cancer and only a few months to live. The care the nurses and doctors gave him during his three-week stay was most astounding to witness.” Francesca Roberts

Education news

Clinical competencies pilot set to launchThis month, the Education Department embarked on an exciting pilot project to initiate nursing competencies within the organisation. It will allow St Barnabas House to evidence the standard of nursing care which exists and make provision for further learning.

Many other hospices have tried this initiative, however it has proved challenging due to its enormity. Therefore, being able to get this up and running is a great achievement.

Each competency requires nurses to undertake structured learning and assessment in supervised practice – spending allocated time with our Clinical Educator, access to relevant education via study days, online and other resources and ‘on the job’ learning and experience.

The purpose of the competencies is to demonstrate the value and skills of our nursing staff. By providing education and one-to-one supervised practice it

Working together with Sussex Partnership, St Wilfrid’s and St Catherine’s Hospices

Last month we facilitated a study day entitled: An Introduction to Caring for People with Dementia. We were asked by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT) to offer staff some training in relation to caring for people at the end of life.

Held at St Barnabas House, we invited neighbouring hospices, St Wilfrid’s and St Catherine’s, to attend. Thirty delegates, including managers, nurses and care support workers, were very enthusiastic and keen to learn.

The focus of the day was for mental health and palliative healthcare professionals to share expertise to enhance the care of people with dementia at the end of life. In the morning there were group discussions and lectures, with locality workshops in the afternoon. Each hospice shared information about their clinical services and how they could be used by everyone, work together to celebrate success and consider how potential challenges may be overcome.

At the end of the day, Carrie George (Lead Nurse for SPFT), considered how we could build on the knowledge and relationships gained from the day. Lots of suggestions were shared, with one of the most popular being to facilitate three link half days, one at each hospice, annually.

It was an effective study day which demonstrated the value of collaborative working. 100% of the delegates said they would recommend the study day and 96% said it would enhance their clinical practice.

acknowledges their individual skills and provides them with continual professional development.

Completion of the competencies will provide each nurse with a professional portfolio detailing ongoing learning and confirm his or her ability to provide a recognised standard of evidence-based care.

A total of eight willing and enthusiastic healthcare assistants from our Hospice at Home service, with Liz Watson as their mentor/assessor, are part of the pilot which runs until October. They will undertake two competencies – Communication and Maintaining Personal Hygiene, two very different but equally vital skills.

A full evaluation to ensure we get it right will take place before we roll it out fully.
