Mike Harley was hired in 1999 at Olympic Tug & Barge in Portland to be our new Port Engineer. Mike came from the coastal and deep sea fishing fleets and served that industry for many years. Tow boating was new to him but down in the engine rooms the supporting machinery was the same. Many stories were told of the innocent and safe jokes played between crews onboard where Mike was said to have been a master of the art in his day. I wish we could tell a few of them in this writing because I know Mike would if he could to bring a smile to you all.

So, to all in honor of Mike Harley, raise a glass, make a toast, tell a Seaman’s Prayer and make someone laugh. -Kirk Bonnin

Mike is survived by Carol (wife), Jody (daughter), and Joe (son) and their families.

“Mike was a team player, great shipmate and go to, can do guy. His loss hits all of us who had the

pleasure of working with him hard.”-Harley Franco

LARGEST CRANES ON THE WEST COAST

On February 22nd 2018, the ZHEN HUA 28 arrived in the Port of Tacoma carrying the four largest container cranes on the west coast. The DR. HANK KAPLAN and RICH PADDEN of Starlight Marine Services PNW escorted the massive vessel into her final destination in the Port of Tacoma.

I was lucky enough to be able to join the crew of the RICH PADDEN and document the arrival of these enormous cranes into the Port of Tacoma. Starlight Marine Services port Captain Dan Morrison and myself met the vessel in Tacoma. After parking, we made our way over to the water where a skiff was waiting for us, “I hope I remember how to do this,” Dan mumbled, as we rowed over to the dock.

When we first got to the dock, Dan touched base with the crewmembers of the DR. HANK KAPLAN and MILLENNIUM DAWN. Over lunch, Dan took some time to review policies, procedures, answer any pending questions from the crews, and just catch up in general. After lunch we moved to the RICH PADDEN where we stayed for the rest of the trip. The crew consisted of Captain Elroy (Luke) Olson, Drew Kerlee, Stephan Thompson, and Micah Denney. Prior to the arrival of the ZHEN HUA 28, all three boats had another job that we were able to ride along for. As I watched the job from the wheelhouse, Captain Olson explained the different aspects of the job as they occurred. Over radio, we could hear the captains of the DR. HANK KAPLAN and MILLENNIUM DAWN communicating with Captain Olson and working together.

While still on the first job, we learned that the ZHEN HUA 28 would be slowing down in Elliot Bay to switch drivers, which would delay them about two hours. The temperature steadily decreased as we distanced ourselves from the shore. As it dropped below thirty degrees, we were met with snowfall. I stepped outside to capture a few photos of the MILLENNIUM DAWN on the first job, and even though I was wearing many layers, the cold air instantly chilled me to the bone.

Over the Inland corner, the tops of the cranes came into view. We were all impressed by their size, and agreed that they reminded us of dinosaurs that towered over the mountains next to the water. With the DR. HANK KAPLAN by our side, we met them as they came around the corner, and watched them move into the port. By this point, the wind had picked up to 30 knots per hour, and what had been a pleasant flurry had turned into heavy snowfall. As we circled the ship for some photos, I could feel every inch of my body growing colder. Next to those cranes, I felt like an ant. They were so large, they even made the DR. HANK KAPLAN look miniscule.

It was a different perspective than I had expected or experienced. With all four cranes on board, the ZHEN HUA 28 looked was so mighty and grand, that capturing its size seemed nearly impossible. With its booms raised these cranes were 434 feet tall, taller than the monster “Godzilla,” who is no slouch at 350 feet. It was one of the most incredible situations I’ve ever been able to take photos in before, and the small snowstorm surrounding us added an element to not forget.

In an attempt to learn more about the cranes, I spoke to Starlight Marine Services PNW Captain Jonah Petrick. Captain Petrick gave me insight into one of the most interesting aspects of the ZHEN HUA 28’s arrival, and that is the delicate process of off boarding. The cranes were transported over completely assembled on the ZHEN HUA 28, which is a heavy lift ship. Engineers spent several days prepping the cranes for movement waiting precise weather parameters because the height and structure of the cranes capture so much wind area that they pose a risk for an incident during offloading. Once the weather was deemed favorable, the ship was ballasted down to match the dock level. With the ZHEN HUA 28 at dock level, the cranes were jacked up clear of the deck of the ship and using a temporary rail line from the ship to shore, the cranes were taken off the ship. The rail line also enabled the cranes wheels be turned and aligned for offloading. The offloading process of each crane took several hours and with many specialists and engineers involved.

Today, these massive additions can be found on newly built docks at Pier 3 and 4 at Husky Terminal.

The Signs of Opioid AddictionBy Sharon Cunningham, Human Resources

Opioid addiction is a growing epidemic in the United States, with opioid overdoses killing more than 115 Americans each day. Below you can learn more about why opioids are used and how to recognize the signs of opioid addiction.

What is an opioid? The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) defines opioids as a class of drugs that act on the nervous system to relieve pain. Common opioids include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids like fentanyl, and prescription painkillers like oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin) and morphine.

Opioid pain relievers are generally safe when taken for a short time and as prescribed by a doctor, but because they produce euphoria in addition to pain relief, many people find them highly addictive. Their accessibility can also cause them to easily be misused, like taking them in a different way or in a larger quantity than prescribed, or using them without a doctor’s prescription. Continued use (and abuse) of opioids can lead to physical dependence on and addiction to these types of drugs.

What are the signs of opioid addiction?Being familiar with the most common signs of opioid addiction can help you or someone you love get proper treatment before it is too late. Physical signs of opioid addiction include the following:· Noticeable euphoria or elation· Drowsiness, confusion or intermittent nodding off· Slowed breathing, Constricted pupils· Decrease in activity, functioning and/or relationships

Get Help NowIf you, a friend, or family member struggle with addiction, you are not alone — 25% of patients receiving long-term opioid therapy struggle with opioid addiction. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, success in becoming substance free begins with recognition that there is a problem. Many employers, including Harley Marine Services, now offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and we encourage anyone struggling with addiction to seek out assistance through these confidential programs. The EAP supplies professional counselors to employees and their families in a safe and private atmosphere. Information disclosed will remain confidential, and no contact with your employer will be made without written permission. Using an EAP will never jeopardize your job or chance for promotion.

For employees at Harley Marine Services, the EAP provides a number of counseling sessions available at no cost. Should you and your counselor decide that a referral to an outside provider is necessary the EAP will assist with this transition. Harley Marine Services cares about its employees and their families and offers 100% medical coverage for qualified substance abuse programs. Additionally, talk with your doctor about addiction treatment using other methods, like non-addictive drugs, to ween off opioids.
