Biogen and AbbVie Have Voluntarily Withdrawn Marketing Authorizations for Zinbryta
Susan M. Reynolds RN MSCN
In May 2016, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the disease-modifying
therapy Zinbryta (daclizumab) for treating relapsing-remitting MS.
Zinbryta is a medication given underneath the skin (subcutaneous injection) every four weeks. The
therapy is an antibody engineered to reduce inflammation. It targets MS patients’ T-cells, which are
key immune cells in inflammation. It is believed that Zinbryta works by blocking the binding site,
called the receptor, on interleukin-2 (IL-2), a molecule in the immune system that activates T-cells.
By blocking the receptor on interleukin-2, T cells are not activated to attack the myelin sheath in
your brain and spinal cord. Zinbryta may also work by increasing cells in the immune system called
natural killer cells, which kill activated T-cells that are programmed to attack the myelin sheath.
Biogen and AbbVie have voluntarily withdrawn global marketing authorizations for their relapsing
multiple sclerosis therapy Zinbryta (daclizumab) because of serious side effects that include
encephalitis (brain inflammation).
The European Medicine Agency, which oversees medications across the European Union, also
released a statement recommending an “immediate suspension” of Zinbryta’s use and a recall.
Twelve cases of immune-mediated inflammatory disorders, including encephalitis, may be linked to
the medication’s use based on a preliminary review of data, the EMA states. Three people have died.
Most cases started within eight months of starting treatment.
Biogen believes the voluntary worldwide withdrawal of Zinbryta is in the best interest of patients.
“We continue to prioritize patient safety and the care of multiple sclerosis patients worldwide,”
Alfred Sandrock, Biogen’s executive vice president and chief medical officer, said in a press release.
Biogen said it will work with regulatory authorities to withdraw Zinbryta and with healthcare
providers to support patients who have been affected.
Zinbryta carries a warning on its label about the potential of patients developing a liver injury that
could be life-threatening. It advises doctors who prescribe the treatment to keep a close watch on
patients’ liver function. Due to its risks, the medication is normally given to patients who have tried
two or more MS treatments without success. To date, over 8,000 patients worldwide have been
treated with Zinbryta.
If you are taking Zinbryta, or if you have taken Zinbryta in the past, please contact your healthcare
provider if you have any questions or concerns.

Fidget Cubes
The fidget cube is a hand held device that can have therapeutic benefits! It has sensory tools
on all sides: a switch, gears, a rolling ball, a small joystick, a spinning disc, and five buttons.
Often, individuals with MS (and elderly persons) have trouble with hand weakness. Fidget cubes can
help with dexterity, keeping the fingers and hands stronger. In addition, they can provide stress relief,
soothing agitated minds.
Toys R’ Us has fidget cubes for $7.98 each. They can also be purchased online at Amazon.com.
