The Inspire Central Wisconsin initiative brings together education and industry to help students and job seekers achieve their goals and address communities’ workforce development needs. Inspire Central Wisconsin provides powerful tools for students and job seekers and adult career searchers, community businesses, educators, and local system administrators.

In an initiative aimed at addressing Wisconsin’s workforce development needs, all nine of the state’s regional economic development organizations have teamed up to develop a statewide platform that directly connects local employers to students. In the Centergy region, that includes the Marshfield area in Wood County, MACCI is leading the effort.

Centergy and MACCI, with support from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DP), will expand the use of a web-based platform called Inspire that virtually connects area businesses to their future talent pool through online profiles, virtual career coaches, and career based learning activities for high school students and educators.

What should I know about Inspire? Inspire is a cloud-based platform that enables collaboration among all community partners in preparing youth to

transition from school success. Inspire integrates seamlessly into Career Cruising for grades 6 to 12.

Inspire connects education and industry with employer profiles, career coaches, work-based learning experiences, communication tools, local events, and social networking connections in a safe and secure platform.

Students engage with employer profiles to see how their pathways connect with businesses and organizations in their community. Students can ask questions of real working people in their community, learn about apprenticeship opportunities, and see upcoming employer-hosted events.

Employers can connect with students and share information about the work they do and skills they need. They can also target students with profiles that match their needs, all on a secure platform that protects students.

Community members can serve as pre-screened mentors to offer real-time career advice and answer students’ questions about the real world of work.

Where do I access Inspire? Participating in Inspire is easy! To access and register your business on this cloud-based platform, visit Centergy’s website to enter Inspire’s employer portal at http://www.centergy.net/workforce/inspire_employers.htm. Upon selecting a username and password, you’ll begin to establish your company profile. The company profile can describe your business, highlight unique attributes, and communicate areas of need to future employees. Upon completion of the company profile section, career coach profile, submittal and approval of a background check, you are now ready to receive and answer communications on your company message board. The message board is monitored by administrators to ensure a safe environment.

I’m Inspired but need some assistance! Have no fear, help is always available. MACCI’s workforce development director Karen Isaacson has attended training sessions, set up a company profile and is now a career coach. She will also be the Inspire Administrator for the Marshfield area businesses. Contact her at (715) 384-3454 or email [email protected] for more information.

Inspire is set to go live in the school districts on October 1, 2017. Therefore, don’t wait to get your company registered or you may be missing out on connecting with your future workforce!

Vita Bella Gala Celebrates Hope and HospitalityHope Lodge is known for its "home away from home" hospitality for people diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers.

The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, but what adds to the ambiance is the smell of a good evening meal being prepared and served in a well-appointed kitchen by volunteers who love to cook and minister to people.

For this work, a special group - Hope Lodge Meal Ministry initiated by North Ridge Church, Marshfield - will be honored at the ninth annual Vita Bella Gala benefitting the American Cancer Society (ACS) Hope Lodge, Marshfield, and is the ninth recipient of the ACS' Spriit of Hope Award.

The Gala will be Thursday, May 3, at Hotel Marshfield beginning with a recep-tion and silent auction at 5:30 p.m.; dinner at 7:00 p.m.; followed by a program

and live auction. Lori and Jake Gropp of Marshfield chair the event again this year and presenting sponsors are Marshfield Clinic Health System and Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc.

Relay for Life volunteer James Gardner of Minnesota, as the evening's guest speaker, will share his first-hand experi-ence with Hope Lodge in New York City while battling and surviving cancer.

Hope Lodge, located at 611 West Doege Street in Marshfield, is a "home away from home," free of charge, for adult cancer patients and their caregivers. The only Hope Lodge location in Wisconsin, this non-medical facility offers community and comfort to cancer patients who must travel to Marshfield to receive lifesaving cancer treatment typi-cally not available in their home communities.

Recipients of the annual Spirit of Hope Award epitomize community service through their work with Hope Lodge, recognizing them for their dedication to people diagnosed with cancer and their families. Their support and leader-ship has been transformative and they have unified others to improve people's lives. Award recipients are builders - people who, quite a part from personal achievements, have raised the capacity of others to advance the common good.

Past Spirit of Hope honorees are Fritz Wenzel, Margaret Peterson, Dr. Douglas Reding, Marilyn Hardacre, the late Dick Hofmeister, Larry Shortess, Mike Schmidt and Dr. William and Karen Hocking.

Since Hope Lodge opened in 2003, over 27,000 guests have been provided with over 70,000 overnight stays, saving patients and their families an estimated $11.6 million. All funds raised at the Gala will directly support the Lodge, ensuring the ability to provide cancer patients and their families with this benefit.

Event tickets are $90 each and available online at www.marshfieldHLgala.org. "Golden Tickets" for a special fund-raiser, a chance to win a Colorado vacation, are available at Hope Lodge and from any committee members.

For more information, contact Amy Zondlo, ACS Community Development manager, 651-255-8147 or amy/[email protected]; or Jewel Quelle, Hope Lodge manager, 715-486-9100 or jewelene.quelle.org

Answer: You might be. There are a number of tax provisions that apply to individuals and small businesses. Here is a brief description of those provisions:

• Health saving account penalty tax--The tax on nonqualified distributions from health savings accounts and Archer medical savings accounts increased to 20%.

• Medicare tax on wages--Individuals with incomes over $200,000, joint taxpayers with incomes exceeding $250,000, and joint taxpayers filing separately with incomes above $125,000 pay an additional 0.9% tax (for Part A hospital coverage) on wages exceeding these income thresholds. Self-employed individuals are also subject to the same tax increase based on the same thresholds, except that the applicable threshold amount is reduced by the taxpayer's wages.

• Medicare tax on unearned income--A tax of 3.8% is applied to net investment income for individuals, estates, and trusts. For individuals and joint filers, the tax applies to some or all of the taxpayer's unearned income based on the amount of modified adjusted gross income that exceeds the same thresholds used to calculate the Medicare tax on wages. There is a different standard for calculation of the tax for estates and trusts.

• Increase in threshold for itemized deduction for medical expenses--The threshold for itemized deduction of unreimbursed medical expenses increased from 7.5% to 10% of adjusted gross income.

• Individual insurance mandate tax--A tax that applies to individuals who don't have qualified health insurance and are not otherwise exempted.

• Employer insurance mandate tax--Employers with more than 50 full-time equivalent employees may be subject to an excise tax if the employer fails to provide qualified health insurance coverage to its employees, or offers coverage that's deemed unaffordable, or offers a plan that covers less than 60% of the cost of plan benefits, and there's at least one employee who is eligible to buy insurance through a Marketplace and receives a tax credit or cost-sharing reduction.

• Tanning bed tax--There is a 10% tax on indoor tanning sessions.
