From The Office of the Director

Dear Friends,

SPRING IS HERE!!!! The daffodils are bouncing to life and the sun is staying out to play longer and longer. Thank goodness for the joys of Mother Nature. It’s time to dust off the snow from the winter season and get to moving out and about. The month of April is a very special month to us this year as we celebrate NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH. This month, you will receive a separate mailing asking you about how you would like to participate as a volunteer here at the Edward King House or in the community-at-large. Your time and talent is a very valuable asset to the community and most especially, to our Center that values you before all else. Stay tuned for announcements that will spotlight EKH members that give of their time and talent on a regular basis. Take special care to read this publication thoroughly as there is much to do in the coming months that your calendar should be filled to the gills. You might especially notice that the ARTS have come alive this season. We are so proud to see the return of our Black Box Theater Program at the Studio at the EKH. This year’s Spring offering will include CLARENCE DARROW-THE ONE MAN PLAY. In today’s political climate, we thought that this show may speak to so many in the community. We are sure that you will find that every-thing old is new again through this production. Don’t forget to mark your calendars! We welcomed back Jeannine Bestoso and her special Drawing and Painting Class that has found new life this Spring. And an additional welcome to newcomer Libby Gilpatric and the new ZENTANGLE therapeutic arts program. Got questions? We have answers. Give us a call and ask us how you can get involved. Music is most definitely on our minds with the upcoming PROUDLY WE SING concert being offered to benefit the EKH by the Newport Navy Choristers. This event will take the place of our major Spring Fundraising event this year friends, be sure to buy a ticket and to sponsor the event as ALL proceeds go to the Edward King House Senior Center programming. We are also asking all veterans who will attend this special event to let join us in cap or jacket representing your armed forces branch on the night of the concert. We are looking forward to a very special opportunity to thank you for your service! Lastly, don’t forget to sign up to join us at the Newport Playhouse this month for our monthly Meet-Up event to see the hilarious THE FOURSOME. Some delicious food, great company and great theater capped off with a fun cabaret. It doesn’t get much better than that! Whatever you choose to do, do it with us and look forward to enjoying the ride!

Sincerely, Carm

The Penny Post Say Hello to Veggie Boxes

The Veggie Box program provides hand-selected fresh produce and other value-added products from a variety of local farms in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Veggie Boxes are delivered year round twice a month from January through June, and weekly from July through December. I’ve been in the habit of buying the same vegetables each week. Now I have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of fresh, local produce along with information on ‘new-to-me” selections with recipes on how to prepare them. I’m looking forward to new ways to cook and healthier eating. Veggie Boxes cost $28 each and payment is made in full one month at a time, in ad-vance. There is a small annual service fee of $6. Veggie Box is an ongoing subscription and customers are welcome to cancel their subscription at any time. The Edward King House must maintain 10 participants to participate in the Veggie Box deliveries. Register on or before April 24th. Deliveries will begin on May 2nd. Veggie Boxes contain 7-9 different types of seasonal produce and will be delivered on Tuesdays at the Edward King House. Boxes must be picked up before 4:00pm and are not able to be held overnight. Please note that Veggie Boxes are packed in a facility that handles aller-gens. You will be billed $6 for the annual fee and any deliveries in that month. In a 4-week month, the charge will be $56 for two deliveries or $112 for four deliveries. In months with five weeks, the cost may be $84 for three deliveries and $140 for five deliveries. Payment can be made by EBT/SNAP card, credit and debit cards. You must notify us by the Thursday before a Tuesday delivery date in order to skip or cancel that box and be eligible for a refund. To make meal planning easier, you’ll receive a Sneak Peek into what you can expect in your next box. You’ll also receive an email newsletter the day before delivery including de-tailed information about each Veggie Box. The contents are based on what’s in season and available from our farms.

Join me in signing up for variety and tastier lifestyles. Cheers, Penny Fitch

Registration for this program is done by ONLINE format only. With the use of credit, debit or EBT cards only.
