Council Reports:

ACT Council no report

Council of Heritage Motor Clubs: CHMC is the NSW umbrella organization with which STHARC is affiliated. CHMC has now been accepted by NSW RMS for registrations under the new CVS for modified vehicles. Access to the CVS must be specifically sought by clubs. Some CHMC clubs have indicated that they do not intend to participate in the CVS. STHARC has registered for the CVS. As a result STHARC members can now access the CVS.

An information package about the CVS has been prepared by CHMC. A copy of the document has been provided to STHARC. The new scheme is not straight forward and members intending to access it need to make themselves aware of its features and obligations. Secretary of CHMS, club members Chris Hillbrick-Boyd asked whether STHARC would be prepared to host a meeting to be attended by officials of CHMC, representatives of regional clubs and club members from affiliated clubs who have an interest in accessing the HVS. There was no apparent opposition to this suggestion. Such a meeting should be scheduled for as soon as possible and preferably as early as possible in April.

Events: Events as set out in the newsletter and on the club website were highlighted. In addition to those published there are South West Get Together at Cowra on 26/3. This event is run by regional clubs which rotate the operation of the event. STHARC has been included as a courtesy. The Cowra location is about as close to Queanbeyan as we are likely to see in the near future.

An outing to visit historic Bederville near Braidwood has been planned for 8 April. Details will be on the website. Payment of $22 for the tour and morning tea needs to be made to David Buckley by 12 March. Continued page 8.

The historic vehicle collection of

Graham Bates ‘GOING FORD IS THE GOING THING!’

The first vehicle that I owned was a Customline Ford in 1959. It was a 1954 Ford Customline sedan. It was a light green and second hand. I bought it when I started working.

I purchased my blue Ute, a 1954 main Line Ford Ute, in 1988 from Barry Malony in Narrabundah ACT. I started to restore it with Les Martin Motors at Fyshwick. When the business closed I went to Seiffert Auto to have the car finished. The motor was reconditioned by Eric Warner at Mittagong. The paint work was done by M& I Smash Repairs in Queanbeyan. It now has about 12 000 miles on it and is still going strong. The trimming was done by Custom Motors Trimming in Fyshwick.

Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 7

I have a 1957 Ford Mainline I purchased it from a man down in a Wrecking yard at Charlton Victoria. Albert Neuss did the restoration of all the mechanical parts while the body work and paint restoration was done by John Cornwell. It is an impressive lime green. This

is another one I take out on Club runs. It runs smoothly and reliably.

I have a 1979 Ford Fairlane 500 which I purchased new from Ron Lawton Fords in Queanbeyan.

I got in just in time as the model was running out and I didn’t like the next one coming.

I also purchased a brand new 1975 F100 Ford Ute from Morton Fords in Cooma. It is mushroom beige. I have had no problems with it since purchase and it is still part of my collection.

Another purchase was a 2003 BA Fairlane sedan. This was a private purchase in Gunghalin ACT. It is green

and I use all the time. This one is my daily use one. By Graham Bates

QUEANBEYAN MULTICULTURAL

FESTIVAL

MARCH 5

The Queanbeyan Multicultural Festival includes a blend of ethnic activities ranging from food to dancing. For anyone with different tastes, the shopping centre is in the next block. Organizers of the event are likely to provide a bit more certainty for next year. This was the first year in which cars have been included as part of this event.

Rumours of a display to be set up at Queanbeyan Park spread during February. Evidence to support the rumours was a little difficult to establish and the details which were available could not be confirmed in the usual way. By the time the final message was sent out to members on Friday night it was assumed we were welcome but there was still no certainty that STHARC was actually invited to participate.

On Sunday morning a quick check with organizers at the event, confirmed that STHARC was a welcome participant so Jane did a quick ring around of frequent or likely participants. Four STHARC members turned up with cars, adding to the four vehicles from other clubs. Members of the public participating in the Multicultural Day activities seemed to enjoy including motoring heritage in their day out. The mix of vehicles owned by STHARC members allows our club to fit neatly with the concept of the festival.

The site available for the car display is a beautiful grassed area under the large trees surrounding the oval which is ideal for displays at this time of the year when the weather can be challenging. There is sufficient space to accommodate more than 200 cars so future growth is well catered for. When we have more time to organize our participation, STHARC members should find this event very attractive.

The Mayor presented each of the clubs attending with a Queanbeyan local government badge and a copy of a recently published book about Queanbeyan which club members are welcome to borrow. Graeme Bates as the first borrower is likely to be able to provide a briefing on the contents.

Attendees: David Arton – 1958 VW Beetle, Max De Oliver – Mini Moke,

Graeme Bates – 1956 Ford Mainline ute, Lawrie Nock 1960-Bentley S2.

BATHURST 2016 By Malcolm Stewart

Last October my nephew, brother and I

headed up to Bathurst for the great race.

I had always promised myself that I would

get to the race one day but as usual life

kept getting in the way.

Having decided to go and after purchasing tickets we thought we should think about organising accommodation! Of course everything was booked out for 100kms.

I can’t understand why I haven’t won Tattslotto because as so often hap-pens to me I got a call out of the blue from a good friend who asked me whether I would like to be his guest at the race. “Great”, I said, “but we need accommodation”. For me, no problem, but for three of us, no chance. BUT he has a mate who owns a farm on the inside of the track opposite the “chase” (the windy bit at the end of Conrod straight). He connects me with “Robbo” who welcomes us to camp on his property.

I was unaware that Robbo and his farm are institutions at Bathurst. Rob-bo bought the farm because of his love of the great race. He lives in Syd-ney and operates a crane business. I asked to him when I met him, “Do you know Raelene’s cousin Sue and her husband Andy who also have a crane business?”. “Yes of course we are long time friends and work to-gether”. Small world.

Anyway Robbo’s farm backs onto the pits and so it is a short walk from his back gate to all the action. Robbo has an amazing bar set up right on the edge of the track looking up conrod and down through the chase…the best place for action as you will recall if you saw the end of the race when ‘that crash’ occurred.

page 12 The Wheel # 174

BATHURST 2016 When we showed up at Bathurst with our car and trailer we arranged to meet outside the track at a little shop nearby. Robbo had resident passes to give us so we could drive our car on the track to get in and out. He could not make the meet so he said he would send a mate down to give us the pass. A few minutes later a stunning blue HDT supercharged monster pulled up and Peter Champion owner of HDT and Peter Brock’s life long friend handed us our pass. Peter also owns 27 of Peter Brocks racing cars and they were all there on display as this race was the tenth anniversary since Brock’s death.

Robbo had set up a camping area with portable bathrooms. It was a

fantastic location and we shared our camp with an

amazing group of car race enthusiasts including a couple who were racing in the supports.

The bar (see photos) is a part of the Bathurst legend and was all action. Up the back Robbo has a barn (with another bar) full of Bathurst racing memorabilia. Pretty much every race team and driver ends up here at some time during the weekend.

One night I was talking to Bev

Brock and Phil Brock. One of

the paddocks is cordoned off for

helicopters and so every now

and then a celebrity would fly in

or out.

Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 13

Oh yes…back to the race.. well not quite yet. We had tickets that includ-ed the pit area behind the main pits. If you go to Bathurst you must buy this upgrade (about $50) because you get incredibly close to the action. I was especially lucky because my mate gave me a corporate access pass as well!

BOC was a major sponsor of Brad Jones Racing so I was lucky to spend time with the race team and drivers including Jason Bright. (unfortunately they have this year withdrawn their sponsorship) The highlight if I could single one out was to snare one of the very restricted passes to the track immediately prior to the race start. My cousin has been going to Bathurst for thirty years and his dream is to do this….he had the !@#@@@’s that I got to do this on my one and only visit to the race. Lucky!

For such a huge event I was impressed with how well it was managed. Great facilities, lots to do and see with car displays and demonstrations. I thought everyone was pretty well behaved but I must say that while I thought Summernats was bad Bathurst breaks all records for the most Boguns in one place at the same time.

The racing is great. The action was non stop especially with great sup-port races. The great race itself is very strategic and it was interesting to be with Brad Jones who explained how their race strategy was set and evolved during the race.

I took a few pictures and you need to remember that photos with the pit girls is a tradition that I upheld. The pictures of HDTs are with Peter Champion who put about 30 classic HDT cars on display at Robbo’s Farm. He told me that he bought HDT to save the name in honour of Pe-ter Brock following HDTs decision to fold.

page 18 The Wheel # 174

The run started out on a clear blue sky day with 4 cars at the club house. Another 4 cars joined us at Bungendore.

The drive to the outskirts of Tarago took us through the bush fire effected area. A quick pit stop at Tarago to make sure no one was missing in the convoy. Then onto the meandering road to Nerriga. The convoy reached up to speeds of 85kpm at times.

When we reached the Nerriga pub Norm told me his high performance Ford started rusting away at the speed we travelling. Hope the rust blew of the car on your drive home ha ha , mine sure did.

With no ac both my front windows were down to keep cool when all of a sudden a large grass hopper hit the inside of my door rear view mirror and hit me in the chin. I think it would do it again if it had guts ( refer pic.)

Every one sat down to lunch and enjoyed the company. As the afternoon temperature started heading towards the mid thirties, it was time to pack up and head off home.

SOME RULES FOR TOWING A TRAILER DID YOU KNOW ?:

The "750kg no brakes" rule isn't a rule - most of the medium too large 4WDs can tow 750kg unbraked, but not always. Even the Toyota Kluger can tow only 700kg unbraked, and smaller vehicles such as the Suzuki Vitara may be down as low as 400kg unbraked, like most road cars. So, it's not right to say that you never need brakes for trailers 750kg and under. Trailer brakes are a great idea for anything over 200kg, and especially if you're going to tow off-road. Oh, and watch for trailers that weight 749kg and don't have brakes, 2kg of load and you're over 750 so you need to tick the brake option box anyway.

A tow tongue may be double rated - one can do 350kg oriented normally, but invert it to gain a bit of height and the rating drops to 250kg.

You need independent trailer brakes above 2000kg - that means overrun brakes are not permitted. The main reason for this is so you can control trailer sway, which is best handled by applying the brakes on the trailer only. You also need a breakaway system so if the trailer disconnects from the tow car then the brakes are automatically applied.

Chains - trailers up to 2500kg require just one chain, over 2500kg two, however double chains are always a good idea, and cross them over so they can catch the drawbar if it disconnects.

The vehicle's maximum tow capacity is the lesser of several factors - as an example, a 2012 Ford Ranger is rated to tow 3350kg. Later models were uprated to 3500kg. If a 2012 model is fitted with a towbar rated to 3500kg then it's still only rated to tow 3350kg as per its door placard, despite the fact the towbar can handle more. Same deal for the tow tongue and everything else in the chain.

A few other rules - you can't tow more than one trailer at a time, no passengers are allowed in trailers, learners are not allowed to tow, and for weights above 3500kg you need a 70mm ball ("normal" ones are 50mm) which is good up to 4500kg.

There's plenty more, some arcane and some not, but you'd better know them because the authorities certainly do and educating yourself by the side of the roadway is less than ideal.

Ladies’ Morning Teas

2017

With the January 18 bushfire at Sutton reaching Jane & Lawrie’s property and Kay evacuating her home during the February 17 bushfire at Carwoola, hopefully, the last of the heatwave conditions are now behind us.

Our first ladies’ morning tea for 2017 was held on Friday, February 24 at Ciao Café in Queanbeyan.

After making our selections of coffee, tea and hot chocolate, along with an assortment or sweet and savoury goodies, all eleven ladies enjoyed the various conversations around the table, as well as the fresh air.

Attendees: Ronda Cornwell, Jane Nock & Lynne Heffernon, Hazel Roxburgh, Kay Carratt, Nancy-Lea Legge, Barbara Malam, Pauline Campbell, Jannie Brown, Alicia Arton and Christine Brown.

Our April morning tea will be held at 10 am on Friday, April 28 at Tulip’s Café in Pialligo.
