RECENT WORKSHOPS, SEMINARS & CONFERENCES:

A research seminar hosted by Research & Publications (R&P) office: Research & Publications office hosted a research seminar on 5th April 2017. The seminar was on ‘Examining the Quality-Quantity trade off: Evidence from a public health intervention in India’ by Aparajita Dasgupta from Ashoka University on 5th April at Classroom P22 at 2.30 p.m. Disruption in the Services Sector: The Alumni Office organized the monthly Saturday Musings session on ‘Disruption in the Services Sector’ on 25th Mar 2017, at the IIMB auditorium. The event included a talk by Prof. G Shainesh, faculty from the Marketing area, on ‘Service Innovations’. This was followed by a panel discussion featuring Anurag Saboo (PGP 96), Co-Founder, Gumption Labs, (Fintech sector); Siva Ganapathi (PGP 94), COO, Idea Cellular (Telecom sector), and Dr. Charit Bhograj, Co-Founder, Tricog, D.M. in Interventional Cardiology from Sri Ramachandra Medical College 2009 (Healthcare sector). The seminar- Translation and the Indian Social Sciences by Veena Naregal, at the Institute of Economic Growth took place on 17th Mar 2017 at classroom P12. This seminar presented colonial bilingualism and translation as fundamental to the imagination of the social science enterprise in India. The Supply Chain Management (SCM) Centre hosted Best Practices Exchange Meet on 17th Mar 2017: The Supply Chain Management Centre, along with the Supply Chain Practitioners Council – a network of SCM Professionals in Bangalore region, organized the Best Practices Exchange Meet on 17th Mar 2017 at Room N102 on campus. The Best Practices Exchange Meet was a platform for sharing and exchanging ideas, approaches and best practices relating to Supply Chain Management. A seminar was hosted by Research & Publications Office on ‘Distribution Costs, Product Quality, and Cross-Country Income Differences’ on 16th Mar 2017: The Office of Research and Publications hosted a research seminar on ‘Distribution Costs, Product Quality, and Cross-Country Income Differences’, on 16th Mar 2017 at Classroom P22. The talk was delivered by Dr. Kunal Dasgupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, University of Toronto.

The talk was delivered by Dr. Anant Balakrishnan, McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin. Research & Publications office hosted seminar titled ‘Culture and Cognition: Does living in a low-solidarity community impede recognition of a Pareto-improving tax-spending program?’ on 14th Mar 2017: The Office of Research and Publications hosted a research seminar on ‘Culture and cognition: Does living in a low-solidarity community impede recognition of a Pareto-improving tax-spending program?’ on 14th Mar 2017 at Classroom P22. The talk was delivered by Dr. Rohini Somanathan, Professor of Economics, Delhi School of Economics. IIMB’s Research & Publications office hosted seminar on ‘Meritocracy and the Public University’ on 13th Mar 2017: The office of Research and Publications hosted a research seminar on ‘Meritocracy and the Public University’ on 13th Mar 2017 at classroom P22. The talk was delivered by Prof. Satish Deshpande, Department of Sociology, University of Delhi. Data Centre & Analytics Lab hosted Masterclass on Healthcare Analytics on 11th Mar 2017: IIM Bangalore’s Data Centre and Analytics Lab (DCAL) hosted a Masterclass on Healthcare Analytics on 11th Mar 2017 at the IIMB auditorium. The DCAL at IIMB aims to support interdisciplinary empirical research using data on India as well as other emerging markets. Workshop for Aerospace Manufacturing Professionals: IIM Bangalore, IIM Udaipur and University of St. Gallen hosted a unique workshop for aerospace manufacturing professionals on 17th Feb 2017. This workshop was about assessing Indian aerospace manufacturing maturity in the next five years and was jointly conducted by IIM Bangalore, IIM Udaipur and University of St. Gallen on 17th Feb at IIM Bangalore. The workshop was targeted at CXOs, senior executives, business unit heads and entrepreneurs from India and abroad and was also aimed at helping aerospace industry executives to formulate their Indian manufacturing strategy. A talk by Dr. Ajay Bakshi, CEO, Manipal Hospitals on Healthcare Economics on 9th Feb 2017: He focused on understanding the larger context of the health sector, the economic principles around which competition, provision, and growth of scarce health services are currently taking place in India. Dr. Ajay Bakshi serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Manipal Health Enterprises Private Limited. He serves as a Director at Manipal Health Enterprises Private Limited. Dr. Bakshi is an AIIMS Graduate. UPCOMING EVENT:

IIM Bangalore will host the inauguration of Batch 2017 of the Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) on 8th April 2017 at 9:30 am at the auditorium. IIMB Director Prof. G. Raghuram and PGPEM Chairperson Prof. Seema Gupta will light the lamp with the chief guest, Ramya TV, Assistant Professor, Strategic Management, IIM Calcutta.

HAPPENINGS AT IIMB: RESIGNATION:

Prof. Chirantan Chatterjee, Assistant Prof. in the Corporate Strategy & Policy Area has been relieved from the services of the Institute with effect from 10th Mar 2017, upon his resignation. APPOINMENTS:

Area Chair – Marketing Prof. Nagasimha B Kanagal has been appointed as Chairperson, Marketing Area. He will take over from Prof. YLR Moorthy on 1st April 2017.

Internal Committee The term of Prof. S. Nayana Tara as the Chairperson, Internal Committee (IC) has concluded. Prof. Rupa Chanda has agreed to be the chairperson of IC, under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act.

Chairperson of PGPPM Prof. Sankarshan Basu has been appointed as the Chairperson of the PGPPM for a period of three years. He will take over from Prof. Rajalaxmi Kamath on 1st April 2017. PROMOTIONS:

Prof. Ashok Thampy has been promoted as Professor with effect from 16th Feb 2017. Prof. Mukta Kulkarni has been promoted as Professor with effect from 20th Jan 2017. Prof. Rejie George P has been promoted as Professor with effect from 20th Jan 2017.

WHAT’S UP @IIMB?

Alumni monthly eNewsletter: The first monthly edition of Alumni eNewsletter was released on 24th Mar 2017. This eNewsletter contains details of various happenings in the alumni community. From a biannual version of the alumni magazine, we have decided to move to a monthly alumni eNewsletter that is comprised of current news and other developments.

Mobile App: The IIMB Alumni mobile application was launched on 18th Mar 2017 at the Delhi alumni themed networking event by the Director, Prof. Raghuram G. This is a part of a series of technology initiatives being taken by the alumni office to increase the touch points with the alumni. The application can be downloaded through the Google play store or Apple app store.

Soumya Patel, IIM Bangalore and IIT Roorkee (BTech) alumnus, is now a product manager at Flipkart. According to Soumya, “The rigour of an MBA programme challenges each individual in a way specific to his/her background and skills. IIMB & NASSCOM partner for Leadership Resource Centre:

IIM Bangalore has partnered with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) to launch the NASSCOM Leadership Academy and the Leadership Resource Center, which aims to enhance skills and create industry-ready talent for the IT sector in India. The service was launched in Feb 2017 in the presence of Prof. Vasanthi Srinivasan, faculty from OBHRM area, IIMB, R. Chandrashekhar, President, NASSCOM, Sushma Rajagopalan, Chairperson - NASSCOM IT Services Council, CEO & MD, ITC Infotech, amongst other industry professionals.

Florintree buys minority stake in app-based loan provider CASHe: Florintree Advisors, a Mumbai-based alternative asset management firm promoted by Mathew Cyriac, former senior MD and India co-head of private equity at Blackstone Group LP and Palaniappan C, both from PGP 94 batch, acquired a minority stake in app-based loan provider CASHe. V. Raman Kumar, chairman of Aeries Financial Technologies Pvt. Ltd that runs CASHe, said the firm raised Rs25 crore in the Series A round. Pulak Ghosh, a professor at IIMB, and Cyriac have joined the Aeries board following the funding. 42nd CONVOCATION OF IIMB:

Mahindra Bank Limited, appeared as the Chief Guest and delivered the convocation address. In his inspiring address, Uday Kotak, described IIMB as “IIM Best.”

Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIMB, in her address, highlighted the institute’s milestones during the academic year 2016-17, the global rankings IIMB achieved, the important partnerships it entered into, IIMB being the convener school of the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2016, IIMB mentoring the new IIM at Visakhapatnam, the case studies developed by IIMB’s faculty which are distributed through Harvard Business Publishing, an affiliate of Harvard Business School, IIMB’s increased focus on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to provide access to a wide range of quality courses through blended learning programs for people who cannot afford regular management programs. “IIMB’s alumni continue to do the school proud with

their achievements and their connection with the

school. I take this occasion to put on record that the

alumni from the Batch of 1991 raised over INR 2

crore for Ganga Trust that works with survivors of

spinal cord injuries. The PGP Class of 1996 also made

“Today, we have 598 students graduating – 20 from the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), 18 from the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM), 75 from the Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM), 4 from the Post Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management (PGSEM), 70 from the one-year full-time Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) and 411 from the two-year full-time Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP),” announced Professor G. Raghuram, Director, IIMB, at the institute’s grand 42nd Annual Convocation ceremony, held on 20th Mar 2017.

ACHIEVERS & AWARDEES:

Among the graduating students this year, eight have been awarded gold medals during the convocation day. Udit Jalan, Dharmendra Hiranandani and Vaibhav Gupta PGP (2015-17), received the gold medals for first rank, second rank and best all round performance. Pranav Kumar Mallick PGPPM (2016-17) won the gold medal for best academic performance. Shishank Gupta and Suresh Ganesan PGPEM (2015-17) won the gold medal for first rank and for best all round performance. Both Nikhil Goyal and Kushal Nitin Dalal won the gold medal for first rank, while the latter won it for best all round performance.

FPM student Kshitij Awasthi’s paper was judged one among the top 10 per cent of accepted papers at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management. Kshitij co-authored the paper with three of our faculty members – Prof. Sai Yayavaram, Prof. Trilochan Sastry and Prof. Rejie George Pallathitta.

Chinmay Tumbe of FPM has received best thesis award. Chinmay received the EXIM Bank's International Economics Research Award (IERA) 2015 for best thesis announced in July 2016.

EPGP students Abhinav Gupta, Anshul Arora and Kumar Parimal won the national-level start-up challenge ‘The Enterprisers’ Inc.’

PGPEM students, Suresh Ganeshan and Tousif Ahmed Inayath Syed, along with Prof. U. Dinesh Kumar, published a case titled ‘Predicting Earnings Manipulation by Indian Firms using Machine Learning Algorithms’ in Harvard Business Publishing.

PGPEM students- Avira Thomas, AC Beliappa, Suhas Narsimhan, Shoubhik Chakraborty, Sanjay Kurpad and Vishal Vora were runners-up in the 2016-17 Global Network Investment Competition, organized by the Global Network for Advanced Management, the GNAM.

PGP students- Deepesh Gupta, Kanika Bansal, Priyanka Bagai and Priya Jindal bagged the second place in the finals in the 2016 Global Business Challenge, a case competition conducted by the Queensland University of Technology, Australia.

Akshay Soni, Archit Jain, Dinkar Mohta and Swati Kanojia made it to the top 3 teams of the 2016 Morgan Stanley Sustainable Investing Challenge in Hong Kong in April.

Chaitanya Kansal was selected for the Economic Times Young Leaders Award 2016.

Shreya Garg was the winner of the Woman Leader Award 2016, instituted by Citibank.

Shikhar Rajendra Sethi, Madhav S Marda, Pulkit Aggarwal and Shifa Garg won the Asia Private Equity Investment Leveraged Buyout Case Challenge event, from among 30 global teams. This was organized by Singapore Management University, along with the New York School of Finance.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS:

Prof. Srivardhini Jha published the paper, ‘The Evolution of an ICT Platform-Enabled Ecosystem for Poverty Alleviation: The Case of eKutir’, in MIS Quarterly.

Prof. Manaswini Bhalla published the paper, ‘Social Learning and Delay in a Dynamic Model of Price Competition’, in the Journal of Economic Theory.

Prof. J Ramachandran’s paper, ‘Navigating Identity Duality in Multinational Subsidiaries: A Paradox Lens on Identity Claims at Hindustan Unilever 1959-2015’, has been accepted by the Journal of International Business Studies.

Prof. B. Mahadevan has been invited to join the editorial board of the California Management Review.

Prof. Pulak Ghosh was honored with the Prof. PC Mahalanobis Medal for outstanding contribution to Econometrics by the Indian Econometric Society. He has been named among the Top 5 Indian data scientists globally. He was awarded as Distinguished Alumnus by the Oakland University, USA in April 2016.

Prof. B. Mahadevan was conferred the Vishista Samskrita Sevavrati Samman 2016 Award by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Prof. M S Sriram won the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award for his collection of short stories and then for an essay.

ALUMNI FUNDING:

Shivananda R Koteshwar an IIMB alumnus of AMP3 (2009-10) has funded (MPWE, IIMB Alumna) Seema Sharath’s startup - Belakoo Co-create- a startup that aims to take creative entrepreneurs away from the chaos of city life to offer them a “co-create space”. Two like-minded women entrepreneurs from Bangalore – Vasudha Veeranna and Seema Sharath – are all set to give a “fresh” twist to the co-working culture with their new venture. Belakoo is a launch bed for innovative technology startups in Renewable Energy (Mesha Energy Solutions Private Limited), Building Automation and Security (Fluxgen Private Limited) and IT Infrastructure (OptIT Private Limited).

MAKING AN IMPACT- Prof. G Raghuram, Director, IIMB talks on IIM Bill in Chennai: The IIMB director gave a talk on the IIM Bill at the Anna University Alumni Club, Boat Club Road, Chennai on 22nd March 2017. IIMB and IIMA alumni from Chennai attended the function. It was a wonderful session and the audience appreciated the razor sharp analysis of Prof. G Raghuram. Almost 20 IIMB alumni, many of them senior alumni, and around 45 IIMA alumni attended the session.

OBITUARY:

Mr. Abraham Kuruvilla, PGP 1978-80 batch, passed away on 10th Mar 2017. Abraham Kuruvilla is the founder trustee and Chairman of CIVIC Bangalore, Consultant at LAKS and an independent management consultant. He pioneered outsourcing software development and computer education in schools in India. He was the past president of IIMBAA and a mentor at NSRCEL.
