Message from our President, Jim Brumit

UNCW Professor W. Taylor Fain Ph.D. was our speaker at our March 2016 meeting. Dr. Fain is a history professor specializing in U.S history. His discussion focused on the Korean conflict and the causes of the conflict. This will lead into our April meeting when we celebrate the veterans who served in the Korean conflict, the “Forgotten War”. At last count eight Korean Conflict veterans have been interviewed by SENCLAND MOAA officers. They will share their experiences us at the luncheon meeting. What a way to recognize those who were in the “Forgotten War.” CAPT (R) John Stewart led a field trip to the Wounded Warrior Battalion facilities and the Fisher House at Camp Lejeune last month. We continue to seek donations for the scholarship and outreach funds. We will have an update for you at our April meeting. You recently received, via email or USPS, a copy of the chapter by-laws. The chapter by-laws have not been changed in several years and it was obvious that they needed reviewing and amending. Please read the by-laws and be prepared to vote on them at our April meeting. On May 3, 2016, we will meet in Oak Island. As always it is good to enjoy comradery with those MOAA officers who live in Brunswick County. Please read Maj Jim Jackson’s comments below about upcoming events. Korean Conflict Recognition Luncheon Details from 1st VP Ken Klassen

Our April 5, 2016 luncheon meeting will be a tribute to eight SENCLAND members who served during combat operations in the Korea Conflict from 1950-1953. Their stories will be summarized during the meeting based on interviews recently conducted by a Chapter member. Each officer will be given a chance to speak and answer a few questions. Our special guests will be: LTC Claude W. (Chik) Cooper, US Army(Ret), who participated in evacuating over 200,000 troops, refugees and civilians from N. Korea in Dec. 1950; Col. Bob Newman, USAF(Ret), who flew rescue missions into N. Korea for three years piloting SA-16 Albatross amphibious planes; CDR Bill Paschall, USN(Ret), who served as an assault boat coxswain aboard two ships transporting invasion troops and transferring Chinese and N. Korean POW’s to and from camps in S. Korea; COL Bruce Patterson, US Army(Ret), who was an artillery officer defending a major USAF Fighter Base in S. Korea; LCDR Bill Pierce, USN(Ret), a supply officer on ships in Korean and Japanese waters; LTC Joe Polanski, US Army(Ret), who served with United Nations Partisan Infantry Korea Special Forces to conduct attacks behind enemy lines; LtCol Paul Semmler, USAF(Ret) who was a navigator for low level flights into enemy territory on SA-16 Albatross Flying Boats to insert and retract personnel from western N. Korean shores; and LtCol Paul Wilson, USMC(Ret), an Infantry Platoon Officer, Third Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marines Division. Please come to hear their stories and honor those who sacrificed so much for our country. Membership Updates

New Look for SENCLAND Website and Newsletter

Our SENCLAND.org website and the Sentinel have a new look. Our website administrator, Rick Kolseth, produced graphics to be used for chapter business including the newsletter, official correspondence, plus business cards for recruiting and advertising purposes. The website is designed and updated to keep you connected to numerous organizations supporting Veterans. The Home page has tabs on the left side for categories including News and Events, Legislative Information, Membership details with application forms for download, details on the Scholarship and Outreach programs, Resource Links to numerous sites, a Sponsorship Tab with details if you are interested in advertising your businesses, and a new category entitled Our Heritage that posts photos, videos and text of important historical events related to the military and our national history.

There is also a roster of Chapter Members updated monthly with contact info available on a Members Only page that is hidden and protected for privacy purposes. If you have questions on access, please contact the webmaster, Ken Klassen, at [email protected]. The site averages over 1000 hits each month, indicating we are viewed by many visitors other than chapter members. If you have friends interested in joining us, the website is a reference easily accessible to all. Input of articles, photos, current topics of importance to MOAA membership is welcome.

Reminder----Chapter Membership Dues for 2016 Are Now Due

Hopefully, you have already renewed your 2016 SENCLAND Chapter membership and submitted your dues payment (possibly with some extra to support our scholarship and outreach efforts). If this has slipped your mind, please bring your check to the upcoming luncheon meeting, or mail it in to the address on the masthead of this newsletter. If you have a question about your payment status please contact Al Schroetel at: [email protected], or 910-686-6905. Why Do I have to Pay Chapter Dues when I have already Paid my National MOAA Dues?

Although our local Chapter (and all other local Chapters) are part of MOAA's national structure and network, all local chapters are separate entities, responsible for their own funding. National MOAA conducts functions on a national scale, for example:

• Lobbying with the US Congress on benefits and entitlements that affect military members, retirees and military families worldwide

• Offering counseling and assistance to its members worldwide; for example: Career transition assistance

 Survivor benefit counseling

• Offering products and services to its members worldwide; for example: • Insurance products such as TRICARE Supplements, Term Life insurance, and Long Term Care

insurance

• Product and services discounts such as travel, Dell and Apple computers, sports and outdoor equipment, apparel, jewelry, etc.

• Financial calculators, tax guide, Estate planning and other resources • More information on these features and others is available

at: http://www.moaa.org/Main_Menu/Access_Member_Benefits/Access_Member_Benefits.html Local Chapters offer local opportunities and benefits, for example:

· Luncheons and social gatherings

· Scholarships to local JROTC students

· Assistance to local military families through the Outreach Program

· Support to the surviving spouses of Chapter members

· Support of local military events and programs, such as Wilmington's annual Massing of the Colors

· Liaison with local elected officials on matters of military interest and State level legislation

· A Chapter Website and Newsletter We hope this clarifies this organization structure and why local Chapter dues are needed even though a person is a National MOAA member, either on an annual basis or as a Life member. If you have any further questions, please contact Al Schroetel at [email protected] or 910-686-6905.

2016 Outreach Contributors

Last month’s newsletter included a listing of chapter members who have made contributions to our scholarship/outreach fund for 2016. This program awards grants to organizations that are working to aid veterans, including veterans’ programs at UNCW, Cape Fear Community College, Brunswick Community College, college scholarships to deserving Junior ROTC Students, as well as other deserving organizations that “reach out” to us. All of these activities are only possible because of contributions from chapter members. It comes back to us many times over. (Note: One asterisk indicates donations of $100 or more, two asterisks indicate $200 or more)

Chuck Akstin * Merlin Bell Francine Berger Rubye Braye Gaython Eaton Lee Hanna ** Charles Harriman Ed Jones Tom Jones Paul Kane Jean Kelly Ken Klassen Elizabeth LeGwin Bill Paschall * Bill Pierce Bob Philpott * Paul Power * Catherine Snyder Chrissy Sanford John Stewart * Larry Wilson * Howard Usher Paul Woodbury

While we deeply appreciate the generosity of the members listed above and in prior months, it should be noted that donations are below those of 2014 and 2015 at this same point in the year and we are only about half way to our goal for 2016. We encourage Chapter members who have not already donated to this important program in 2016 to donate by: Mail a check to MOAA SENCLAND, P.O. Box 382, Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480 or Make a donation at a future luncheon or meeting. Stay Informed About Issues Important to MOAA Members on a National Level An easy way to stay current on the issues impacting service men and women, active and retired, is to periodically go to MOAA’s Legislative Update section on their website, MOAA.org. For your convenience, here is a quick and easy web link to get you there - http://capwiz.com/moaa/home/.

Editorial Policy

The SENCLAND SENTINEL Newsletter is published by the SENCLAND Chapter, which is an affiliate of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). MOAA and its affiliated chapters and councils are nonpartisan organizations.

SENCLAND Sentinel – Our Chapter’s Voice

Our newsletter is published monthly (except July & August) in sufficient time to provide information on upcoming meetings. We want this newsletter to be of value to you, but we do not aim to compete with established print, broadcast, or online media, and we do not simply distill what MOAA National is publishing in Military Officer each month. What we want to do here is keep you informed about the chapter and our SENCLAND efforts to stay connected with each other, and support our local military and veteran communities.

To that end, we encourage you to provide content for publication in our newsletter and online. Simply send your notices, letters, articles, and photos to our editor, Brud Deas, ([email protected]) as you collect them. Everything submitted by the 15th of the month will be considered for inclusion in the following month’s newsletter. All items are subject to editing.

SENCLAND Sentinel accepts sponsorships from our members and other supporters. You can see a full listing of current sponsors at the end of each newsletter. Soliciting sponsorship in this way provides a nice way to recognize our sponsors while allowing us to keep our dues the lowest in the state. If you would like to discuss sponsorship opportunities for yourself, your company, other veteran fraternal and support organizations, or anyone else that appreciates the mission of SENCLAND MOAA, please email Brud.

Cash sponsorships in excess of the cost of publishing this newsletter in its current format will augment our local military and veteran outreach activities, increasing the positive effect that we have on our local community. Consider inviting your neighbors to participate by sharing this newsletter with them and talking about MOAA SENCLAND. Whenever possible, please patronize our sponsors and let them know we all appreciate

their support of our important initiatives.
