SA Summer Employment

All student‐athletes must complete the Employment Approval form through ARMS for any summer em‐

ployment. Here are a few reminders concerning employment:

Student‐athletes must be paid only for work actually performed.

The rate of pay must be equal to that of a normal employee performing the same task and at the

going rate in that locality for similar services.

Student‐athletes may not be employed because of their reputation, fame, or publicity that they may

bring to the employer.

Student‐athletes may not receive any benefits not generally available to all employees.

Student‐athletes may NOT be paid in advance of work performed.

Student‐athletes may NOT endorse any products or services of my employer (e.g., social media, print

advertisements, commercials).

SA Compliance Conundrum

This is the final conundrum of the 2015-20156 academic year. We wish all 26 teams good luck as you compete for the GW Athletics Compliance Office’s occa-sional meal. Remember, only one team can win.

You made a lot of good progress this year in your sport and you are anxious to keep pro-gressing during the summer. You are hop-ing to compete for a team unaffiliated with GW in your hometown. Which of the fol-lowing is true?

A. You can practice with a professional

team.

B. You can be paid to practice with a profes-sional team.

C. You can compete for a professional team.

D. You can practice and compete on a club team

E. None of the above

Good Luck!!

Employment at College/University Camps or Clinics

Student‐Athletes employed by an institutional camps or clinic must meet the following criteria:

Student‐athletes must be paid only for work actually performed.

The rate of pay must be equal to that of a normal employee performing the same task and at the

going rate in that locality for similar services.

Student‐athletes may not be employed because of their reputation, fame, or publicity that they

may bring to the employer.

If you only lecture or participate in demonstrations at a camp or clinic you may not be paid.

Actual travel expenses (lodging, meals, transportation) may be provided or employment only if

such expenses are paid and procedures used for reimbursement of expenses for all employees of

the camp or clinic.

“There may be people that

have more talent than you,

but there's no excuse for

anyone to work harder than

you do.”

-- Derek Jeter, longtime

Yankees shortstop (1995-

2014)

Summer Camps

Coaches that work or operate camps in which prospects participate must ensure that those camps follow all requirements of a GW

camp.

GW sports camps and clinics must be open to any and all entrants limited by only number, age, grade level, and gender. This language

must be included on camp websites, brochures or other advertising/promotions for the camp/clinics.

Coaches may engage in recruiting conversations with prospects at GW camps/clinics ONLY. Please note you are NOT permitted to

extend written or verbal offers of athletically related financial aid to any prospect during his or her attendance at the camp or clinic.

For basketball camps, GW must include an educational session detailing NCAA ini al‐eligibility standards and regulations related to

gambling, agents, and drug use to all camp participants (7th grade and up).

A booster may not pay a prospect’s registration fee to attend a GW camp or clinic, unless it is for their own child.

GW may employ a prospect in its camp or clinic, provided the prospect has signed an NLI or written offer of financial aid.

Compensation for camp employees may only be paid for work performed, and at a rate commensurate with the going rate in the lo‐

cality for similar services.

Please remember that all pre-camp paperwork must be turned in at least 30 days prior to the start of the camp/clinic.

NLI Signing Reminders

By signing an NLI, a prospect agrees to attend the designated college or

university for one academic year. Pursuant to the terms of the NLI pro‐

gram, participating institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid to

the student‐athlete, provided he/she is admitted to the institution and

is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.

An important provision of the NLI program is a recruiting prohibition

which goes into affect after a prospect signs an NLI. This prohibition

requires participating institutions to cease recruitment of a prospect

once an NLI is signed with another institution.

A prospect must sign the NLI and athletics aid agreement within seven

(7) days of issuance, or else the NLI is invalid.

Coaches Compliance Conundrum

Some of your student-athletes have expressed interest in staying near campus and working out in the Smith Center weight room voluntarily over the summer. Which of the following is a true statement?

A) The student has to be enrolled in summer school to work out in the Smith Center; B) You, as a coach, can be present in the weight room to assist them in training; C) A strength and conditioning coach can conduct the work out sessions; D) None of the above; E) All of the above
