Westervelts Corners’ NewsApril is upon us and the warm weather is just around the corner (we promise!). March was a busy month and many great things happened in our school. Some of the events in March were: Aussie X Dancers, Scientists in the School, Peel Tech Challenge, a Basketball Tournament and our Character Education Assembly on Responsibility. Looking forward, April is also going to be an important month on our calendar. We begin the month with our annual food drive and will begin collecting non-perishable items for the first couple of weeks of April. Thank you for your generosity and a “shout out” to Mrs. Gardash for coordinating this important community service! We are committed to promoting caring, cooperation, honesty, inclusiveness, responsibility and respect with our entire community and will be recognizing World Autism Day and International Day of Pink this month. Education week is April 13-17. The theme for this year week-long focus on education is “Inspire. Greatness. Together”. Earth Day activities include class activities, Litter-less Lunch Days, and a Community Clean up. Our students have always enjoyed helping to clean the yard to make our school and Earth beautiful. To help commemorate Royal Orchard’s

10th anniversary, Royal Orchard students that graduated from Westervelts, will spend a day with us playing math games with our students.

Welcome back to Mrs. Hansra from maternity leave. She will be replacing Ms. Gill in our Grade 3 class. Please welcome Ms. Batton to our Kindergarten team! We are sad that we had to say good-bye to Mrs. James and Ms. Gill and we hope we will see them in our school again!

April 22 is Administrative Professionals Day. We would like to thank Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Celenza for all that they do every minute of every day to help our students, parents, and staff at Westervelts. Your hard work and dedication are appreciated today and all year. You both brighten the lives of our students with your smiles!

Pita Pit Lunches Are A Huge Success! The pitas are a huge success with our students, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our ordering program.

Orders are due on Wednesdays, for the NEXT week’s Thursday (8 days later) delivery.

As a helpful hint, please mark in your child’s agenda when he/she will be receiving their pita.

Also, the order forms have the delivery date printed on it. Thank you for your Pita Lunch orders!

The Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for diversity. Statistics show that more than half bullying behaviours stop if bystanders intervene. Teaching about diversity is something that all Peel schools teach and discuss with students. It is not something that we pause to teach—it is embedded in all we do and teach every day. Day of Pink is just one way for us to reflect and strengthen our focus towards achieving equity for all students and staff.

On April 8, the staff at our school will wear pink t-shirts to show their support of Day of Pink initiatives. We invite students to join us in wearing pink as, together, we stand against homophobic/transphobic bullying and discrimination. If your child does not have any pink clothing but wishes to participate, consider a pink bandana, ribbon, scarf or hat. We know that one small act can create a ripple effect that can change a community. At Westervelts, pink is definitely the new black!!Technological Skills Challenge Day February 26 for Grade 4 and 5 StudentsThe Peel Technological Skills Challenge (PTSC) is an annual event that includes almost 1000 students from grades 4-8 from the Peel School Board. To prepare, all of Westervelts’ grade 4 and 5 students had an opportunity to learn about Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, 2D

Animation, or Technology (wood work), and participate in one of four challenges. At our Westervelts’ Tech Day, our students worked on challenges in teams, and four teams (16 students) were chosen to represent us at PTSC at Morning Star Middle School on March 25. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Ambury lead this initiate for our school (he also is one of the School Board’s leaders of this event). We would also like to thank Mr. Jackson, Ms. Williams, Ms. Bisson, Mr. Hancock, Mrs. Smith and Mr. Bond for their support of this incredible opportunity for all of our students at Westervelts.

Aussie X Thrilled our StudentsAll of Grade 1-5 students participated in the exciting Aussie X dance program on March 10, 12, and 13th. “How important are the arts? Right up there with vocabulary and literacy, claim many educators, who advise parents to begin engaging their children in art activities

Played Like Champions! The Wildcats played with heart in the March Madness Basketball Tournament at the Hershey Centre. They played their strongest game at the end and made some nice baskets. As always, they showed determination and sportsmanship. Mr. Bond and Mr. Jackson are proud of their efforts.

April Showers Bring May Flowers and Mud! Spring has sprung and with that comes muddy weather—hence muddy clothes and shoes. Please send indoor shoes for your child(ren) to help us keep our hallways and classrooms clean. Thank you!
