Making the Case for Public TVA trio of WTIU Community Advisory Board members went to our nation’s capital for three days in February to build the case for public television. Pam Davidson, Sally Gaskill, and Lynn Schwartzberg went to Washington, D.C. at their own expense, accompanied by WTIU Program Director Brent Molnar as WTIU’s official representative. The group spent two days at the 2015 Public Media Summit, a conference of presentations on issues facing public broadcasting that was attended by over 600 professionals in the field. On their third day, the WTIU group presented what they learned to lawmakers, including Indiana’s Senator Joe Donnelly and Representative Todd Young. They stressed the importance of WTIU to south-central Indiana and solicited their support for public broadcasting in the federal budget. “Pam, Lynn, and Sally are our biggest cheerleaders,” Molnar said. “We need more like them.”

The National Mall – America’s Front Yard Tuesday, April 7 at 9pm

The United States National Mall, in the heart of Washington, D.C., is a landscape unlike any other on Earth. From its conception in 1791 to its current status as one of the most cherished icons of our democracy, the story of the Mall mirrors the story of the United States.

NATURE: Animal HomesWednesdays, April 15 to 29 at 8pm

This three-part series investigates how animals build their amazing homes, and the intriguing behaviors that take place in them. Ecologist Chris Morgan evaluates the homes’ material, location, neighborhood, and aesthetics. The series investigates the amazing flexibility of the animal architects, their clever choices, and the ingenious ways they deal with troublesome habitats.

Voice among the Silent: The Legacy of James G. McDonaldThursday, April 16 at 10pm

This is the first documentary to tell the story of IU alumnus James McDonald, who warned world leaders of Adolf Hitler’s plan for the Jews, found havens for refugees fleeing Germany, and served as the first U.S. Ambassador to Israel. McDonald’s story was almost lost to history until his diaries were discovered in 2003.

Great Performances: Annie Lennox – Nostalgia Live in ConcertFriday, April 3 at 10pm

Throughout her four-decade career, Annie Lennox has defied categorization—diving into blues, soul, folk, and pop to create songs that transcend boundaries. On her latest album, Nostalgia, she performs from the American Songbook—with songs such as “Summertime,” “Georgia on My Mind,” and “God Bless the Child”—bringing a hypnotic intimacy to these timeless classics.

Dick Cavett’s VietnamMonday, April 27 at 10pm

On the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, this program examines the war’s effect on America through interviews conducted on The Dick Cavett Show, which featured thoughtful political conversation and debate. It combines interviews from the shows with archival footage, network news broadcasts, and material from the National Archives.

The Day the 60s Died Monday, April 27 at 9pm

In May 1970, four students were shot dead during an anti-war protest at Kent State University. The mayhem that followed was a divisive moment in American history. From college campuses to the jungles of Cambodia to the Nixon White House, this riveting documentary returns to that turbulent spring 45 years ago.

Spring Fund DriveApril 9th to 14th

This month WFIU listeners will hear something they don’t usually hear: a spring fund drive.

The reason for the spring drive is simple: we didn’t make our goal for the fund drive last fall — we fell about $65,000 short. So $65,000 is our goal. Beyond that, our hope is twofold: to increase the number of “sustaining” members—listeners who contribute a regular monthly amount on an ongoing basis; second, we’d like to give those listeners who weren’t able to give last fall another opportunity to support the programming that brings so much value to our lives.

We hope you’ll help us in reaching our goal by making a pledge on-line or by phone. Thank you!

Carnegie Hall Live brings you the world’s greatest artists recorded live from the renowned concert hall. Each program in the 13-part series is co-hosted by Jeff Spurgeon with luminaries from the arts world.

The season kicks off with an Opening Night Gala on April 5 with a concert by the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Sir Simon Rattle with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Acclaimed soprano Deborah Voigt co-hosts. Former NPR correspondent John Hockenberry co-hosts the April 12 program, which features the Academy of Ancient Music performing the Bach orchestral suites. Actor David Hyde Pierce co-hosts the April 26 show, a recital by pianist Daniil Trifonov of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Liszt.

Last Days in Vietnam: American Experience Tuesday, April 28, 9–11pm

During the last days of the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon as village after village fell to the North.

U.S. diplomats and military operatives still in Saigon grew concerned for the safety of their South Vietnamese allies, co-workers, and friends who faced imprisonment or death following a North Vietnamese victory.

With the city under fire, American officers on the ground faced a moral dilemma: whether to follow official policy and evacuate U.S. citizens and their dependents only, or to ignore their orders and save the Vietnamese men, women, and children they had come to love in their years in Vietnam.

Risking their careers and courts-martial, a handful of individuals took matters into their own hands. Engaging in unsanctioned operations, they waged a desperate effort to evacuate as many South Vietnamese as possible.

Most of the action on that final day took place at the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, where thousands of South Vietnamese scaled the walls while a U.S. intelligence analyst ran his own underground railroad of evacuees to barges on the Saigon River.

In the final hours of the evacuation, Ambassador Graham Martin used American resources meant for his own protection to extract thousands of South Vietnamese during an 18-hour airlift from the embassy compound.

Last Days in Vietnam was directed by Rory Kennedy and is airing in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.
