First Lady’s Project for 2015 ‐ “Joy For The Kids!”

My First Lady’s Project for 2015 is suppor ng the Springfield Shriners Children’s Hospi‐tal Out‐Pa ent Department. This will include a beverage cart service, a re as needed (shorts and johnnies), and keeping the book box supplied. Last year the Out‐Pa ent Department saw 15,000 children. Every child coming for an appointment receives a book that they pick out to take home. Therefore, I am star ng “Joy’s Book‐ que.” I will be accep ng new children’s books as a dona on. Periodically during the year we will take these collected books to the Out Pa ent Department. A box for book collec on will be kept in the Sphinx Shrine Office and brought out for our events and monthly mee ngs. Please put your name on a s cky note or piece of paper so that I can acknowledge your dona on. To support the other needs of the Out‐Pa ent Department throughout the year I will be selling pins, key chains, ornaments and having the Teddy Bear Tea in March to support these projects. I will also accept checks and monetary dona ons. Please make out checks to Shriner’s Hospital and write Sphinx Shrine First Lady’s Project. You can mail the check to me, give it to the Recorder’s Office or send it to the Springfield Hospital. Thank you in advance for helping me with my project for the Out‐Pa ent Department at the Shriners Spring‐field Hospital where the goal is to give each family a great experi‐ence every me that they visit. Your dedicated efforts to support this project will ensure we reach this worthwhile goal.

CHIEF RABBAN NEWS WHAT's NEW? EVERYTHING IS NEW!!!! ..... or is it? The physical building really hasn't changed that much from when I first became a Shriner. The outside looks good in the "back" or is it the "front" of building, whatever, the inside has been improved, and the kitchen is a lot cleaner. Perhaps you're thinking "Isn't that good enough??? No, not really. Bricks and mortar are not what makes‐up the "soul" of Sphinx Shriners. It's the membership and the a tude portrayed inside those "bricks and mortar! Brainstorming ways to a ract new members, being visible in the community through publicity, striving to restore members that are pres‐ently inac ve and establishing interac ons with the Blue Lodg‐es. That's the lifeblood of our organiza on! When Shriners or visitors come into our Sphinx Shriners build‐ing they should sense a posi ve a tude throughout our build‐ing. Adhering to our "Mission Statement" should be evident. So, I bet you're wondering what exactly does our "Mission Statement" say. I'm glad you asked!

Sphinx Shrine ‐ Mission Statement

The Mission of Sphinx Shriners is to be the premiere organiza on that Perpetuates fraternal fun and social fellowship, camaraderie and family involvement among men of moral character. Provides opportunity for self improvement through leadership and personal growth. Reaffirms a commitment to community service through support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children

The year 2015 is the me to come together to create a revital‐ized ac ve membership. We should be proud to be Shriners and we need everyone's support to con nue our mission. David J. Herbert

We’ll show our trucks anywhere we are invited. Recently, we did at Arby’s in North Haven to encourage dona ons for a former pa ent at the Shriners Hospital for Children. We also par cipated in the Brown’s Harvest event in Windsor as well for dona ons. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at the Shrine Center. Any Shriner is welcomed and is encouraged to a end our mee ng and join the False Alarmers Club to have fun ‐ especially to experience driving up the middle of the road in parades with police keeping the public at bay. Can you say you’ve ever done that? We do it all to help support Shriners Hospitals for Children. We also have an annual dinner where we “encourage” our wives and others to a end – so they don’t have to cook at home!!! Also, we would encourage any and all mechanically minded Nobles to join us. The Sphinx Ladies Club was very busy this Fall. In September, we were honored to have Illustrious Sir, Terry Worster, install the new officers. Each officer received a pink rose with a bow to represent her office. (Green for treasurer, Blue for Secretary, and yellow or gold for Vice President and President.) In October, we kicked off our fund raising campaign to sell Munson chocolate bars. The project was a huge success and we sold out quickly. With the holidays approaching, the November mee ng was spent making baskets for the Christmas Basket Blitz to benefit the Trans‐porta on Fund. Our theme was “Chocolate”. Our very talented ladies made two baskets for the raffle and we had lots of fun! We had a great Christmas party in December. We all brought a grab bag gi and played The Night Before Christmas game in order to get our gi . Everyone brought cookies for the Cookie Swap and for sampling. In January, we discussed plans for future fund raisers, for doing Easter baskets and our special guest speaker was P.P. Vernon Cleaves. Please come and join us!

THE SECRET

One day, one friend asked another, "How is it that you are always so happy?

You have so much energy, and you never seem to get down or defeated."

With eyes smiling, this friend said, "I know the Secret!:"

"What secret I asked?"

My friend said, " I will tell you if you promise to share the SECRET with others."

"I promise." My friend said,

"I have learned there is li le I can do in my life, that will make me truly happy. I must depend on someone else to make me happy and

to meet my needs. When a need arises in my life, I have to trust someone else, to supply according, to their riches.

I have learned that, most of the me, I don't need half of the things, that I think I do.

Someone always seem to supply, so I am never really in need."

WHO CAN DO THIS??? The ques oner's first thought was, "That's too simple!"

But upon reflec ng about life, the ques oner recalled how a new and a larger house would bring happiness, but it didn't.

How a be er paying job would bring happiness, but it hadn't. When realizing that the greatest happiness came from family and friends, just si ng playing games, ea ng pizza or reading a story,

and thought, "This is just too simple."

HOW CAN THIS BE??? Again the ques oner thought, "Now how can people, playing games,

ea ng pizza or reading a story really make me happy." "Maybe there is something more than this or Maybe I haven't

thought of everything.

Maybe there is some hidden factor or rule I do not know about." The ques oner thought again "Maybe, when I speak word of kind‐

ness, look for the good in people, help feed someone who is hungry, knowing none walk alone in life, Maybe we all need a helping hand,

which each of us has two, one at the end of each arm.

Maybe there is someone who guides us or some set of rules we do not really think about, that is guiding us, Maybe we know a SECRET

but, we do not realize it.

THE SECRET??? Maybe we all know it ‐ Maybe.

The Secret is so full of wisdom it makes us happy, acts as our guide, and causes us to trust.

We just have to believe it and do it....

MAYBE???

Boston Hospital Success Story... Meet 11‐year‐old Ihor: His survivor story just might bring tears to your eyes. About 30 percent of Ihor’s body was severely burned when he was just 3 years old. His family lives in the Ukraine, and didn’t know where to turn. So for years, his injuries were neglected. By the me he was brought to a hospital, he had lost the ability to walk, and the skin on one arm had fused to his chest. Then his mother did the unthinkable: she abandoned him at a Ukrainian hospital. Ihor’s body and spirit were broken. But fortunately, Shriners Hospitals for Children® was there to bring Love to the rescue® of Ihor. Ihor was brought to Shriners Hospitals for Children Boston to

begin his journey of healing. Because of this excellent care, phys‐ical and occupa onal therapy, and personal support provided by Shriners Hospitals for Children, today Ihor is able to walk again, and to regain a happy childhood. "I can do everything now. I can go to school … I can go outside and play. I can eat by myself. I can go home and do my home‐work. I can go to bed by myself," said Ihor. "I can do everything by myself. I can live a life now." And thanks to the con nued generosity of caring people like you, he will con nue to make progress.

(WESTOVER AIR RESERVE BASE, Mass.) ‐‐ Nine‐year‐old Peyton Malloy became Westover's newest "pilot" as Col. Albert Lupenski knelt and presented the young boy with his "wings." "It's my day!" shouted Peyton, to Westover's newest wing com‐mander and to a roomful of Airmen and Peyton's family. In 2011, Peyton had a severe case of scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs with youngsters most o en during a growth spurt. His spine was at a 90 percent curvature. Devastated when put in trac on to straighten his spine, his resiliency prevailed. By the end of his 75‐day stay at Shriners Hospital in Springfield, he was welcoming new pa ents ‐‐ telling them everything would be okay. "Pilot for a Day" is a program that provides high‐spirited children like Peyton that have serious or chronic condi ons, and their families the unique opportunity to be guests of Westover and the U.S. Air Force. Peyton was accompanied by his mother Anne, father Robert, and sister, Ashlyn. His Pilot for A Day visit began at the 337th Airli Squadron briefing room. Peyton received a standard‐issue flight jacket, and was sworn in as an honorary pilot for the day. The family then headed to the control tower to get some views of the base from one of Westover's premier vantage points. The 11‐story tower looms more than 120 feet high. The boy's imagina on ran wild during his tour in a C‐5. He pre‐tended to shout into the radio controls from the pilot's seat of a C‐5. Peyton also took the controls of the base's C‐5 flight simula‐tor as it "flew" to Hawaii.

Airmen with the 439th Security Forces Squadron and members of the Westover Fire Department provided tours to Peyton and his family of their facili es and equipment. Peyton even had the chance to ride in a fire truck with his family and spray the hose. The young boy's infec ous personality got the a en on of many Airmen on base, not to exclude Command Chief Master Sergeant David Carbin. Chief Carbin, who had earlier coined Peyton, shared many laughs with the family over lunch at the Westover Club. The command chief taught Peyton the history of coins in the mili‐tary and told him how to "coin check" other Airmen. Peyton en‐joyed visi ng tables at the club, dropping his coin on each. "I won against everyone in the cafeteria," said Peyton as he flashed his coin. Anne Malloy said Peyton's a tude with managing scoliosis amaz‐es his family every day and makes them especially proud. She said they were grateful for the experience to visit Westover on a busy fall UTA. "It was an amazing day and opportunity to see the inner workings of Westover. We would have never been able to do this had it not been for Pilot for A Day," she said. This ar cle was wri en by SrA.  Monica Ricci,  439th Airli  Wing Public Affairs.

“You can dream it, you can hope it, or you can make it happen,” Ezra, now 9 years old, says. “Think of what you have instead of what you don’t have.” That’s a powerful message, especially coming from Ezra, a child born with a par ally formed hand and leg. Ezra and his family became part of the Shriners Hospi‐tals for Children® family when he was just two weeks old. His parents were understandably worried, but the doc‐tors assured them that they’d be chasing him around like every other kid in no me. And they were right! Thanks to the support of generous people like you, our doctors, nurses, and other medical staff deliver life‐changing treatment and care to kids like Ezra every day, regardless of their families’ ability to pay. When Ezra was just 10 months old, his team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Los Angeles made him his first prosthe c leg. And the team of world‐class prosthe sts at Shriners Hospitals for Children con nued to provide Ezra with prosthe c legs un l he was 4 years old. Ezra was part of Shriners’ Child Amputee Prosthe c Project (CAPP), where he was able to meet other am‐putee children going through similar struggles. In fact, being at CAPP helped Ezra realize that, in his words, “Being different is okay.” Today, at 9, Ezra is the star ng quarterback on his flag football team, a blue belt in karate, and a record‐holding track and field star! Not only that, he was nom‐inated as a finalist for SportsKid of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine! And it’s thanks to the support of people like you that Shriners Hospitals for Children was able to get this star up on his feet. Please, give today. Help other kids like Ezra make won‐derful things in their lives “happen” through hope and healing at Shriners Hospitals for Children na onwide.

Sincerely, Dale Stauss  Dale Stauss Chairman of the Board of Directors Shriners Hospitals for Children®
