Quality monitoring analysis of UIC pallets

Introduction
The study was carried out by Conlegno in co-operation with
ECR Italia in order to look into the quality of the UIC
pallet
pool circulating in Italy

Data was collected by independent inspection companies
(during their regular visits to check the compliance of
products
bearing the marks held by Conlegno). The numbers of the UIC
pallets found is specified in the enclosed report.

64 reports were completed over a period of two months. The
surveys were carried out in companies throughout Italy, for
a
total of 260 sampled and controlled pallets; 239 pallets
were
not compliant with UIC code 435-2, corresponding to 92% of
the samples.

682 defects were detected on 260 controlled pallets,
corresponding
to an average of 2.85 defects for each non-compliant pallet.
511 "structural" defects were detected, which could have
jeopardized
pallet performance.
160 were "minor" defects, however indicating a lack of
controls.
Since these pallets have been introduced only recently, only
11
pallets showed clear signs of repairs, 8 of which did not bear
the
repair control nail. In 3 cases, repairs were carried out with
used
wood.
