The following is my interview with Eddie Wallace, Oregon Shakespeare Festival Membership & Sales Manager, which was published in their membership e-newsletter and sent out to 17,000 people on 03/29/14.

1. Joy, many of our audience members know the word “Soroptimist” from renting blankets and pillows in the Allen Elizabethan Theatre. Could you tell us a bit more about Soroptimist?

Soroptimist was founded in California in 1921 and Soroptimist International of Ashland (SIA) was chartered in 1946. The organization now has over 80,000 members in 127 countries and territories. Our vision is that “Women and girls have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential and live their dreams.” We accomplish this through our mission “to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to economic and social empowerment.”

2. What are some of the good works being done (or that have been done) in the Rogue Valley (and beyond?) with money raised from the pillow and blanket sales?

OSF and SIA have been community partners since 1949. By managing and staffing the Pillow & Blanket Booth every summer, SIA is able to donate almost $25,000 annually to the OSF FAIR (Fellowships, Apprenticeships, Internships, and Residencies) program. April will be a busy month for Fundraising. Early in the month will be distribution of your garden certificates from Valley View Nursery and the raffle for certificate holders (reminder-you need not be present to win). We are planning this for the first meeting in April. Enjoy your certificates and remember “April showers bring May flowers” especially if you plant seeds or starts—your garden certificate will help with that!

Pat Acklin’s Party of Party Historical Ashland Walk and coffee afterward (no host at Boulevard Coffee located at Stratford Inn Motel) is scheduled for Saturday April 12th with the possiblility of a second date being added at some point.

April may be the cruelest month in the words of Shakespeare* (I think he said that) but we will end on a fun and happy note with a Blue Moon on April 30th.

*Note: “April is the cruellest month . . .” begins the first line of The Waste Land, the signature modernist poem by T. S. Eliot.

Walk on the Wild Sideby Mel Bailey

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE! Well, walk on the wildflower side with Mel Bailey and Kathy Mooney on 5/3. We’re set on going to the historic Sterling Mine Ditch Trail, which is in the Applegate area. The Siskiyou Uplands Trail Association has spent the last two or three years reclaiming this trail for recreation, and it’s really fun. Nearly level, it will offer a nice variety of terrain: we’ll start in deep woods (home of my favorite little calypso orchids) and contour along the hillside (with virtually no climb) through classic native oaks stands with lots of sunshine. This will be a fun out n’ back walk with views of Sterling Creek and the Little Applegate valley. Then we’ll drive up to the Jackson Campground on Upper Applegate Road to have our picnic—and Kathy already has a stylin’ menu planned for that!

This will be a really fun, mellow day. But it’ll take nearly all day: we’ll leave town about 9:00AM, returning about 3:30ish, cost is $22. We’ll be handing around the signup sheet during April.

Soroptimist Strong Girls Strong Womenby Sara Brown

THANK YOU Soroptimist Strong Girls Strong Women volunteers. Without you, Helman and our community partners, we couldn’t pull off this multi-faceted program. Read on for a list of your names.

The winter term began with our sixth Community Dinner on January 30th (thank you Mavis, Sue, Mel and Susan H for taking leadership roles) followed immediately by Valentines and the beginning of the Careers segment of our 4th and 5th grade SSGSW girls after school program.

Every winter Linda Anderson takes individual pictures of each 39 Lunch Buddies and their mentors and formats them into valentines for the mentor and her girl. This task was complicated because the Lunch Buddies met in their classrooms this year, each grade (2-5) with a different lunchtime schedule and meeting day. Hats off to Linda for perseverance.

Christy Lewis, Channel 12 TV anchor, kicked off Careers with tips on asking good questions. Laurie Schaaf helped us set up a mock interview with Lindsay Taylor, a computer programmer. Because we emphasized STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) jobs this year, on week 2 Linda led the girls in the interactive “Hour of [computer] Code” program. Week 3, we emphasized engineering and met with Paula Brown, former Director of Public Works City of Ashland and Navy reserve officer, and Erin Smith, SOU ROTC. Thanks to Pat Acklin for arranging this visit. Week 4 we went to the Schneider Art Museum, saw their show on houses and talked with Erika Leppmann about her job as museum director. The girls had a side trip to the photo lab to take pictures of their faces.

Summer Brandon, education manager at ScienceWorks, welcomed our busload of girls in the parking lot on week 5, led us through a roaring

dinosaur exhibit and demonstrated science magic in the conference room. After telling the girls about the college courses she took to prepare for her job, she asked them how many were planning to go to college. Most hands shot right up. Summer gets the award for generating career enthusiasm. (picture) Thanks to Carolyn Johnson for arranging this visit and Amanda Pyle for shepherding the girls.

Do you know what to expect when the TV weather person says a “low [L] front is coming in”? On week 6 Alyssa Caroprese meteorologist for Channel 12 (early morning and 11am), told the girls “L” means lousy weather. The girls guessed that a high [H] front means happy weather. Rather than majoring in journalism, Alyssa majored in meteorology, which meant a big dose of science classes. She regaled us with stories of how meteorologists prepare the public for weather disasters. What really surprised the girls was that Alyssa’s boss could tell her how to fix her hair and what clothes to wear on TV----a little dose of workplace reality. Thanks to Mavis Cloutier for setting up both meetings with Channel 12s Christy Lewis and Alyssa Caroprese.

Our last trip was to Blackstone Audio where we met Megan Wahrenbrock. As publishing director, Megan is responsible for securing authors and overseeing the production of audio books. This was where the interviewing tips from Christy Lewis and coaching by Helman teachers, Teresa Yurchis and Shoshana Leopold, paid off. The girls had a play list of questions including, “What’s the hardest part of your job?” “Learning to supervise 60 people,” Megan said. She told us about her initial interview for a job as an analyst. When they were satisfied with her technical skills, they grilled her about what she was reading. She’s convinced she got the job because she liked to read. We toured the sound studios where books are recorded and saw how book CDs are mass-produced. Thanks to Kathy

Mooney for helping shepherd the girls.

Dr. Seuss Day brought the annual SSGSW book give away to all Helman K-1 grade girls. Sue Kurth and Linda Anderson manage this project with the help this year of Roberta Broadie, Kathy Garrett Canape and Barbara Oldfield. Linda gets remaindered books free through her family connection with Highlights’ Boyds Mills Press, and we buy Girls AtoZ by Eve Bunting & Suzanne Bloom because it encourages every girl to Live Your Dreams, the gist of this program. Each girl gets three books----a book she chooses, Girls A to Z, and

an activity book. Linda prints bookplates with a girl’s name and SSGSW to put in each book. This year we gave books to 51 girls.

bookcases made. A bookcase, along with 10-15 books are given to 4-6 girls identified by teachers as most profiting from books in their homes. Then Sue delivers bookcases and books to the girls’ homes.

Carolyn Johnson, representing Public Awareness, and I, representing SSGSW, have worked with Jeff Golden, producer of the Immense Possibilities programs, to create a program focusing on STEM education locally and in Oregon. Susan Hollandsworth and two girls from the after-school program represented Soroptimist at the video session. Summer Brandon represented ScienceWorks. The show will air in May---details to come.

Now, on to April and May for the outdoor environmental after-school program for the 4th and 5th grade girls and the wind up of Lunch Buddies for the school year.

Pillow Booth: It’s Timeby Mavis Cloutier

Beginning April 9 members will be able to sign up for the pillow booth. The first week of April will be reserved

for new members only so we can get them introduced to this fabulous experience. Go to our website and click on pillow booth and begin your signups for 6 nights. Some of you like to work more, but only sign up for 6 nights. You will have opportunities to substitute. We want everyone who is able to work on our CLUB project. Remember you are responsible for finding your own substitutes if you are unable to work. Then you must make the change using the trade or substitution section and notify the monthly chairs if within two days of the work date. Linda or Kathy M. will update the calendar and notify you after receiving your signups, which are processed on a first come basis. Don’t shy away from Friday and Saturday evenings and especially 4th of July. There will be an orientation for the booth at club on May 21st and the new members and monthly co-chairs will be receiving additional orientations. Thank you for what we hope will be a very successful year.
