Charity knitting: Not too early to start thinking about the holiday party By Chris Goudeau

Thanks to all who took home some of the char-ity yarn that I brought to our last meeting. I’ll be bringing some each month for you to use. You can always use your leftover/oddball pieces of yarn for hats or pet blankets.

As you know, we will be having our holiday party at St. Mary’s Home (December 2013). Yes, I know that’s far away, but I just wanted to remind you. They are looking for hats, slippers and lap blankets, just to name a few items. All your knitted items need to be made with yarn washable in hot water.

St. Mary’s (www.saintmaryshome.org) cares for children and young adults from newborn to age 21 years and will be opening a wing for adults this year; this means your items can be made in child or adult sizes. You can bring them to our meetings any time or save them for later in the year.

I will not be at the April meeting as I will be out of town, but the charity log will be there for you to sign and record your charity items. You also can always email me at [email protected]. Thank you.

Linen, and cotton and silk! Oh my! The spring yarns just keep coming in. The shop has a wide array of fibers and blends that are just perfect for the warn summer days that hopefully will be upon us soon. My favorites are those that have a little glitz to add sparkle to any attire. Stacy Charles' Flora comes in silver, white, or black and has tiny sequins. A blend of 95% cotton and 5% polyester, it's de-

signed to knit on a size 7 needle. Berroco's perennial favorite, Seduce, also knits on a 7 needle. Giada from Adriafil gets its glitz from tiny sequins and 22% nylon and polyester blended with the 78% cotton. Its recom-mended needle is a 6. Sanibel from Classic Elite Yarns is 42% cot-ton and 58% viscose. The accompanying pattern book has pat-terns for shawls, sleeveless coverups, and sweaters. A new yarn from Cascade is Sunseeker. In addition to having glitz, its other positive attribute is that it's machine washable and dryable. Each skein has 237 yards and knits on a 4-5 needle.   Think spring, Roz

The president opened the March 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. with birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating March birthdays. The president welcomed our guests and new member.

The February 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the Guild’s balance prior to this meeting is $5,356.60. The treasurer advised we have not paid the majority of the pending retreat expenses yet.

The vice president updated the guild on the 2013 TKGV knitting contest. The contest rules are posted in the March newsletter. Entries are due by Sept. 7, 2013. All items entered must be knit between September 2012 and September 2013.  The winners will be announced at the October 2013 meeting.

The newsletter chair thanked Lynn Clements for her con-tributions to the newsletter. The newsletter chair encouraged all Guild members to submit articles for the newsletter.

The charity chair advised yarn is available for charity knit-ting and thanked the recent charity knit-in attendees for par-ticipating in this event. The Guild will focus on items for St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children. St. Mary’s needs lap blankets, mittens, hats and slippers for residents ranging from infancy to age 21. All items must be machine-washable in hot water. Guild members were reminded to report their charity knitting items, whether for St. Mary’s or other charities on the charity items list.

The president advised the Spring Craft Fair is Friday through Sunday, March 15-17. The Guild will have a booth and needs members to support the booth during the fair. All members who support the booth will receive free entrance to the Spring Craft Fair provided they sign up prior to March 8.

The president advised the Gathering of the Guilds will take place on Saturday, April 6. Again, the Guild will have a table and needs members to support the table during this event.

The president is participating in the Fine Arts Fair at Western Branch Elementary School on Friday, April 6. If any

Guild members wish to participate, please contact the presi-dent.

The president solicits volunteers to plan the Guild’s World Wide Knit in Public event(s) for 2013. We need a team to plan the location(s) and dates for this June event.

Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep: will be participating in the TKGV Knit-ting by the Sea retreat this weekend.

The Knitting Corner: is the sole yarn shop for Kelbie hand dyed yarns. Kelbie is a Virginia-based independent yarn dyer.

The Yarn Club: is offering 15 percent off two skeins of yarn for Guild members attending the TKGV Knitting by the Sea retreat this weekend.

Marilyn Estrada, a certified yoga instructor, led the Guild in an interactive program of hand care for knitters. Marilyn led the Guild through a series of hand massage techniques and hand stretches and provided tips on good hand care for knitters and crafters.

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of sock-themed yarn.

The Guild enjoyed the show and tell.

The April program is an introduction to a Guild knit-a-long shawl project led by Linda Johnson. Members do not need to bring yarn, needles or other materials to the April meeting to participate in this program.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted,

Katie Gerwien Secretary, TKGV
