How do you cope with stress? Do you look to food, television, tobacco, alcohol, or other solutions to calm your nerves? These options might take your mind off of your worries, but a lot of these “answers” can have a negative impact on your health.
I would like to offer another option for reducing stress and lifting your mood. This outlet will not only improve your mood but has long-term health benefi ts: Exercise.
I would like to see the neighborhood come to life, not only for our individual well being but also for the health of the community. Get out there and take a stroll around the block. Get familiar with the houses around you and what is happening down the street. I would like to see more people getting outside and moving, more people like Irene Stemple. Most days, about an hour before sundown, she will hit the streets of our neighborhood. I met Irene a few weeks ago while working in my yard; she was doing what she calls, “following the pig trail,” or taking a walk. She is 79 years old and has been a dedicated resident of Mistletoe Heights since 1967. She is a vibrant, active member of the community. She is happy, healthy, and strong, and her vitality
enriches my day more than she knows. Thank you Irene for your love for our neighborhood, knowing you has improved my life.Get out and create the Irene in you. Learn about your neighbors. See who is talking to who. The neighbors on the street
behind me stand in their yards and talk. They give each other ideas on yard tips and more importantly they learn about those who share this neighborhood. When you know your neighbors, you take better care of the community in which we live. Invite me to your block for a walk. Tell me how we can make our neighborhood better. I want to know what’s important to you.

The Yard of the Month The April yard of month goes to Thomas and Marjorie Day. This comes as no surprise as Marjorie is a Master Gardener. Her husband, Thomas, has worked w it h a t y pographic company that creates maps for the oil and gas industry since 1978.The Days have lived in Mistletoe Heights for seven years, and Marjorie was also the former MHA newsletter editor.
The Days have planted a variety of fl owers and plants in their yard. They were chosen as this month’s yard of the month because of their front yard, but their backyard deserves recognition as well. Plants include Don Juan’s Climbing Rose, Irises (purple and white), Japanese Maple, Laguaria, Gem Magnolia, Texas Sage, Shasta Daisies, Buford Holly, Corabelle’s, Black Scallop Aguga, and Verbina.
Also impressive is that they started their yard from scratch. They do their own composting, which they use to fertilize their gardens. The Days also use rain barrels for irrigation. Their biggest challenges include minimizing the grass sections of their lawn to include more gardens and reducing watering expenses. Marjorie also propagates many of her plant varieties to lower the expense of buying mature plants in some species. I am excited to see what great ideas they come up with next to conserve and recycle.
This month was a competitive one for yard of the month. We do have some prospects to check back with, so keep up the great work!

MHA Association needs:Your Help!
The neighborhood association is in need of volunteers! We need a Historic Preservation Committee (three to fi ve volunteers)! Kathy McReynolds and Martin Herring have done an excellent job chairing this position for us for over seven years and we are grateful for their time and efforts. They have volunteered to walk the new committee through the position to aid in the transition.
We need someone to take over as the advertising representative for the newsletter. Kelley Reece has kindly volunteered his time for over six years. Someone with advertising experience would be ideal, but we really just need someone who can keep track of what ads need to go in what issue.
We need a web editor! The association is looking for someone to manage the content on our current website. This person will work closely with the MHA offi cers and Scott Ewing.
If you’d like more information, contact Kyle Jensen at 940.367.1428 or [email protected].

PrairieFest 2013The eighth annual Fort Worth Prairie Fest is Saturday, April
27, 11 am to 8 pm, at Tandy Hills Natural Area, 3400 View Street.
The information below was taken from tandyhills.org.
Tandy Hills Natural Area (THNA) is a 160-acre indigenous remnant of Fort Worth prairie located in the heart of Fort Worth, Texas. The land was obtained by the City of Fort Worth Parks Department in the 1960s and designated a “natural area” in 1987. Since 1990, the park has been managed by the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge.
Noted for its unusually complete collection of prairie fl ora, THNA contains more than 500 native plant species. The show of spring wildfl owers is unsurpassed in the metroplex. The land is a living demonstration of how most of Fort Worth and the Great Plains appeared in predevelopment times.
Visit tandyhills.org for more information.
