Mayor's message In September you elected a fresh and enthusiastic group of councillors who fully support consultation with residents. To that end, we kicked off the year with five Ward Summits, so the councillors could talk directly with residents and listen to the concerns they had for their local areas. We also discussed what the residents wanted Ku-ring-gai to look like in the future to help us review our Community Strategic Plan.Close to 200 residents attended the summits, which confirmed the councillors’ view - that we need to reduce Council costs and put more money back into basic services like roads and footpaths. We are now using the feedback from the summits and other information to review our services, cut costs and get back to basics.Another issue was the increasing number of abandoned shopping trolleys that are littering Ku-ring-gai, particularly near bus stops and apartment buildings. We consulted with supermarkets, shopping centre management and trolley collectors and have put together a small group to commence a campaign to encourage people to return their shopping trolleys. If you live in an apartment building where this is an issue, please also raise it with your body corporate. Lastly, we have a new website with convenient online services. Make sure you book your next cleanup at www.kmc.nsw.gov.auElaine Malicki, Mayorwww.facebook.com/kcmayor

To make finding information as easy as possible for our residents, we launched a brand new council website and mobile site in February. This was done after extensive consultation and usability testing with the community. It is intuitive, completely rewritten in plain English, has a powerful search engine and if you still can’t find what you are looking for, just click on our live chat and talk to one of our friendly customer
service officers (between 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday).Try our ‘Find out what’s near you’ feature - just type in your home address
and find out your bin collection dates, what’s on near you, the contact details of your ward.
councillors and nearby parks and sports facilities. Reporting a problem on the go is now really easy with our mobile site. Just take a photo on your smart phone and upload it to our mobile form.

local centres - The Ku-ring-gai Local Environment Plan (Local Centres) 2012 took effect on 8 February 2013. It sets out the future development of land within Ku-ring-gai’s six centres - Turramurra, Pymble, St Ives, Lindfield, Gordon and Roseville. We recently had the draft Development Control Plan (Local Centres) open for public comment. This plan takes a more detailed approach and aims to achieve high quality building design, landscaping and community spaces in keeping with Ku-ring-gai’s character. We are reviewing your feedback, which will be included in a report to Council in May.rest of Ku-ring-gai - You would have received a letter in the mail about the draft Ku-ring-gai Local Environment Plan 2013, which sets out the zoning and land use for the rest of Ku-ring-gai. It will replace the outdated Ku-ring-gai Planning Scheme Ordinance and has special considerations for our environment and heritage. Have your say at: www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/exhibition

The concrete has been poured for the new indoor heated pools at the west Pymble Aquatic and Fitness centre and soon the roof on the main building will be craned into place. Most of the construction will be finished by spring, with the internal fit-out to follow. We have called for tenders for management of the centre, which will be announced in the next few weeks. Significant rainfall has caused delays on this project and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we make every effort to deliver a quality aquatic and fitness centre for the community to enjoy. Stay up to date on the project at www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/pool

Feral rabbits are increasing on the North Shore and cause major environmental damage, destroying native vegetation, sportsfields and gardens. We’re an active member of the Urban Feral Animal Action Group, made up of local and state government agencies working together to reduce pest species in northern Sydney. This group laid baits and released the rHD virus in late March to control the rabbit population.
