I once heard Rev. Bill Easum say we Methodists agree that Jesus is Lord…and just about nothing else after that. I would add we don’t even agree what it means to say Jesus is Lord. I sometimes wonder if “Jesus is Lord” is enough to hold us together. We don’t agree on how to minister with homosexual persons in our communities. We can’t even agree to say we don’t agree. We cannot agree on how meaningfully to share the gospel with the fastest growing religious group in our nation those who claim “none” as their religion. Our last General Conference was a shambles of paralyzing disagreement. Will “Jesus is Lord” cut it? So I ponder: What has kept me in the church all these years? I’ve spent my whole adult life tending the structures, systems, and ministries of the church, but it is not the institutional church that holds me in it. I have had a lover’s quarrel with the church all my life. I have studied Bible and theology as long as I can remember, but it is not doctrine or intellectual ideas that hold me in the church. I have ached over the American church’s Biblical illiteracy. I have met some wonderful people in the church, but it is not the community that holds me. I stay in the church in spite of people as well as because of them. What holds me is…Jesus. I am irredeemably fascinated by him. I can’t get free of him. I hear him say things (“seventy times seven” and “Father, forgive them, they don’t know…”) just when I prefer his silence. I can’t claim I follow him, because I do and I don’t. I can’t say I trust him, because I do and I don’t. I can’t even say I love him, because I do and I don’t. But even in my “don’t” times, I find myself held in his orbit, alternately gladdened and haunted by his teaching, ministry, death, and resurrection. Something about Jesus has exerted a life-long hold on me. I’m in the church because I need to be with others who are similarly captivated, captured, grasped. I am in the church not because of the church but because of the church’s Lord…Jesus. Paul Tillich said something close to this. To those of other religions and no religion, he insists Christians must not say we have a better religion, or better ideas, or a better way of life, or better ethics, or more truth or love or peace. “We do not want to convert you to us, not even to the best of us. This would be of no avail. We want only to show you something we have seen and to tell you something we have heard: That in the midst of the old creation there is a New Creation, and that this New Creation is manifest in Jesus who is called the Christ.” ( The New Being) Whenever the morning new makes me shudder or weep, and the dreadful role (active or passive) of Christians makes me shudder worse, I remember these words and sigh, “Amen!” Jesus doesn’t just hold me in the church. Jesus holds me…period. To the extent I am held together, it is all the doing of Jesus. Maybe this is all perfectly obvious to you. Some of us, sometimes, are helped by restating the obvious. So with the apostle Paul, I confess, “All I want is to know Jesus Christ.” I dare say that because I have learned that when I want to forget Christ, something deeper in me still wants to know him know him, not just know about him. “Jesus is Lord” is enough. I once heard Rev. Bill Easum say we Methodists agree that Jesus is Lord…and just about

nothing else after that. I would add we don’t even agree what it means to say Jesus is Lord. I

sometimes wonder if “Jesus is Lord” is enough to hold us together. We don’t agree on how to

minister with homosexual persons in our communities. We can’t even agree to say we don’t

agree. We cannot agree on how meaningfully to share the gospel with the fastest growing

religious group in our nation – those who claim “none” as their religion. Our last General

Conference was a shambles of paralyzing disagreement. Will “Jesus is Lord” cut it?

So I ponder: What has kept me in the church all these years? I’ve spent my whole adult life

tending the structures, systems, and ministries of the church, but it is not the institutional church

that holds me in it. I have had a lover’s quarrel with the church all my life. I have studied Bible

and theology as long as I can remember, but it is not doctrine or intellectual ideas that hold me in

the church. I have ached over the American church’s Biblical illiteracy. I have met some

wonderful people in the church, but it is not the community that holds me. I stay in the church in

spite of people as well as because of them.

What holds me is…Jesus. I am irredeemably fascinated by him. I can’t get free of him. I hear

him say things (“seventy times seven” and “Father, forgive them, they don’t know…”) just when

I prefer his silence. I can’t claim I follow him, because I do and I don’t. I can’t say I trust him,

because I do and I don’t. I can’t even say I love him, because I do and I don’t. But even in my

“don’t” times, I find myself held in his orbit, alternately gladdened and haunted by his teaching,

ministry, death, and resurrection. Something about Jesus has exerted a life-long hold on me.

I’m in the church because I need to be with others who are similarly captivated, captured,

grasped. I am in the church not because of the church but because of the church’s Lord…Jesus.

Paul Tillich said something close to this. To those of other religions and no religion, he insists

Christians must not say we have a better religion, or better ideas, or a better way of life, or better

ethics, or more truth or love or peace. “We do not want to convert you to us, not even to the best

of us. This would be of no avail. We want only to show you something we have seen and to tell

you something we have heard: That in the midst of the old creation there is a New Creation, and

that this New Creation is manifest in Jesus who is called the Christ.” (The New Being)

Whenever the morning new makes me shudder or weep, and the dreadful role (active or passive)

of Christians makes me shudder worse, I remember these words and sigh, “Amen!”

Jesus doesn’t just hold me in the church. Jesus holds me…period. To the extent I am held

together, it is all the doing of Jesus. Maybe this is all perfectly obvious to you. Some of us,

sometimes, are helped by restating the obvious. So with the apostle Paul, I confess, “All I want

is to know Jesus Christ.” I dare say that because I have learned that when I want to forget

Christ, something deeper in me still wants to know him – know him, not just know about him.

“Jesus is Lord” is enough. If it isn’t, I know nothing else that is. I want only to show you

something I have seen: Jesus.

Worship in April

T H E MES S ENGER

April 7 – Second Sunday of Easter – Holy Communion

Three distinct worship experiences, all with communion.

8am - Liturgical Service of Scripture, Prayer and Song, led by Pastor Rob Hamilton.

9am - Sharing the Journey Sunday. Join our elementary-aged Sunday school students as we explore

a different perspective on the story of Pentecost in a uniquely engaging traditional worship service for every

generation.

10:45 - iWitness - the focus of this service is what your worship leaders/planners call, "wildcard." It

will be a service that has no thematic or scriptural connection to the other services that morning. A "wildcard"

service is often the most engaging and reflective style of iWitness worship we offer. So come be surprised but

also open to how God will stir in and around us at this "wildcard" service.

April 14 – Third Sunday of Easter

At all three services, the mission team who recently worked for Kids Alive in Haiti will lead worship.

They have been meeting to plan the worship experience. Come and learn from them what God is doing among

those Jesus so identified with: “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat.” Learn what God is doing

among them – not just for them, but also through them. Parker Michael Wigdzinski will be baptized at 9:00.

April 21 – Fourth Sunday of Easter

Resurrection is hard on people who like neatness and order above all. When God resurrects, people

and things get all out of place. Jesus doesn’t stay in the tomb, which is just where a crucified, dead, and buried

body is supposed to stay. And the Holy Spirit blows into whom it will, and pushes them where it will – often

in surprisingly out-of-place places. According to Luke in the Acts of the Apostles (better titled Acts of the

Holy Spirit through the Apostles), Easter means that people and events keep getting surprisingly relocated.

Pastor Bill Obalil will explore the holy out-of-placeness God works in Tabitha and her Widows Club (Acts

9:36-43).

April 28 – Fifth Sunday of Easter

8am- Liturgical Service of Scripture, Prayer and Song, led by Pastor Rob Hamilton.

9:00 & 10:45am - the children's choirs and youth choir will present "Heroes of the Faith" for their

annual spring musical. This musical features a museum full of biblical heroes and their stories as told in script

and song. Note that both 9:00 & 10:45 are the same service, the exception being that 10:45 has better parking

and preferred seating available.

Our next SERVICE OF HEALING will be held on Sunday, April 7th, 5:00 p.m. in our Sanctuary. We hold this joint service

on the first Sunday of each month, rotating between UMCG and St. Mark’s Church in Geneva. For more information,

please call Joan Peterson at 630-443-0007.

Stewardship Committee

I am please to communicate under the leadership of Pastor Hamilton, the Stewardship Committee has begun meeting to review the results from the 2013 Stewardship drive and prepare for our future needs. The results from the efforts of very few dedicated members, led by Pastor Hamilton shows a significant improvement over the prior year. It was the special effort of Pastor Hamilton to highlight our church's need for more giving for this year that encouraged me to join this important work. Our focus is to encourage our people to continue volunteering their time, talents, and resources to help each of us let our "Light Shine" as we are all called to do. We will be meeting several times during the course of this year to help each of us find a way to humbly brighten our light and serve the needs of those in need in our community and the world we are so blessed to be part of. There is still time for you to confirm your intent to support your church for the remainder of 2013. Just send a note with your next gift confirming your intentions. Many thanks to each of you for your service and support of all the outreach we have going on here at UMCG. New Titles for Familiar Faces The Staff-Parish Relations Committee has updated job titles for certain staff members. We noted that Jami Johnson has already transitioned from Director of Lay Ministries to Director of Communications. In addition, all staff members who were previously "Assistant Director" are now titled "Director" of their particular area of responsibility. Jodi Borger is now Director of Children's Education; Staci Lockman is Director of Youth Education; Eric Reniva is Director of Youth Activities; and Mike Popplewell is Director of Choral Ministries.

Our intent is to better reflect each staff member's actual role and authority. We want to thank each member of our staff for their dedicated service to their areas of ministry, and to recognize that each one works both independently and interdependently with each other. What a beautiful witness to the Body of Christ they are!

Changes to our health care laws and patient privacy laws have made it nearly impossible for your church and

pastors to know if you have been hospitalized.

Once upon a time, when someone was admitted to the hospital, the hospital would automatically call your church to

inform your pastors of the hospitalization. This practice was discontinued many, many years ago at most hospitals

across the nation. Knowing that spiritual care is important to their patients, hospitals then made available to their pastors

a list of the general daily census. Pastors could ask for the list and read through it looking for names of parishioners. In

1996, with the passage of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) which also addresses patient

privacy concerns, these generalized lists were no longer made available to clergy. Again, hospitals value the care

pastors and churches provide to their patients, so at admission patients could identify their church affiliation and clergy

could ask for a printout of those who have self-identified their church affiliation - in our case as United Methodists of

Geneva - in order to make calls on hospitalized parishioners. In 2010, with the passage of the Patient Protection and

Affordable Care Act (PPACA), hospitals are required to use electronic medical charts. The premier electronic charting

system used by most hospitals including those in the Cadence System - at Delnor and Central DuPage hospitals - has

no place to record a patient's religious affiliation, hence no list can be provided. Unless your pastors ask for a patient by

name or we have been contacted by you or a third-party regarding a hospitalization, there is no way for your pastors to

know if you are a patient at our local hospitals. With 999 members at UMCG, it would take a long time to ask for each

member by name; neither the church or hospital can afford such a tedious task.

If you want your pastors or church family to know about your hospitalization, here are two steps you can take to

inform your church:

1) Either you or a family member or friend can call the church office 630.232.7120 to leave a message anytime day or

night.

Office hours are Monday though Thursday 8:30am-4:30pm, you can reach an office staff member or volunteers

during these hours. Note that a message left on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday may not be received until Monday

morning. If your hospitalization needs more urgent attention of the pastors at night or on a Friday, Saturday or

Sunday, calling the parsonages is a good alternative. The Senior Pastor's parsonage phone number is

630.232.0830 and the Associate Pastor is 630.232.0863. During office hours, its best to call the church office first as

they are aware of the pastors' schedule and can inform pastors quickly.

2) The nurses and chaplains at Delnor and Central DuPage hospitals can call the church on your behalf.

Most in the healing profession recognize the benefits to patients when including one's spiritual life in a treatment

plan. The chaplains at our local hospitals are great advocates for patents' spiritual needs and understand the

complication and inconvenience these changes have made to churches and pastors. As a result, our local chaplains

and charge nurses are more than happy to contact your pastors to communicate your desire to have the church or

pastors know about your hospitalization.

an entertainment blogger, Noelle Hancock was lost. About to turn 29, she'd spent her career writing about

she wanted out of life. She feared change; in fact she feared almost everything. Once confident and ambitious,
