Could it be? Have we finally made it to spring and on our

way to summer? The days are longer and the tempera-ture is warmer. Juneauites are wearing shorts and tee shirts and have ditched their jackets until the fall! April also brings April Fool’s day and is the month of fiscal responsibil-ity (eww)… Hope you are done or well

on your way with your taxes. Moving on to more pleasant things, I’ve been barbecuing, hiking, washing my car before the roads are swept and cleaned which means my car is shiny and clean for a hot minute.

Sunshine and warm(er) weather does strange things to folks in Alaska. On our first beautiful day with heat in the sun, the locals have a crazed glazed look in their eye and a sometimes a creepy perm-a-smile. All the hot dog buns are gone from the market and people are running around in flip-flops looking for

firewood. The usual reckless drivers are especially uncon-cerned or over concerned with other drivers on the road. As a homeowner spring is the time to see the damage done from winter’s past. As the snow melts we find all the stuff we forgot to put away in the

fall that is semi-frozen in the yard and we get to observe all the dirt and grime on the siding and the roof.

Slowly we start to put away the winter equipment and take out the summer gear which has a lovely coating of dust, cobwebs and the occasional startling spider that reminds us that it’s also time to clean the inside of the house regardless

to how badly we want to be outside playing. Welcome to spring Southeast Alaska! Whether you are venturing outside to have a campfire or are climbing up a ladder to check out the roof, stay safe out there and celebrate our Spring and Summer with class and caution.

On Saturday, April 6, from 10am to 3pm, all of Ju-

neau’s women are invited to attend the 4th annual Alaska Women’s Expo at Centennial Hall. “Come on down to cel-ebrate and honor Juneau’s won-derful community of creative women,” said Holly Cerne, co-chair of the AWE planning committee. “We’ll have entertainment, vendors, exhibits, a fashion show, work-shops, door prizes, a silent auction, and keynote speakers. There’s something for every woman, and admission is free, thanks to Alaska USA!”

“Centennial Hall will be full of vendors and exhibits that have special appeal to women, with everything from beauty products to wellness support, gardening goods to home organization supplies, and more represent-ed,” said Jetta Whittaker, an AWE organiz-er. Workshops will include sessions on the dangers of sexting (something every parent should know about) ten creative things to do with a vase, and women’s ways of lead-ing, among others. “We’re also delighted that the Yees Ku Oo Dancers, Daughters of the New Moon, the JDHS Dance Team,

and the Juneau Roller Girls will all be there to entertain us, too.”

A favorite part of AWE every year is the fashion show. “This year, we’ll have the latest in spring fashions from local re-tailers Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, Lisa Davidson’s

Boutique and Shoefly featured on the run-way,” Whittaker said. “From simple to fan-cy, the fashion show will have something for everyone.” Local celebrity and “fairy gAWEdmother” Sharon Gaiptman will be the Mistress of Ceremonies for the fashion show.

A healthy and delicious lunch from Abby’s Kitchen will be available for purchase, and Abby Roha, the creative genius and master chef behind Abby’s Kitchen, will be one of AWE’s featured speakers. “We wanted to focus on one of Juneau’s most success-ful young women, so we are delighted that Abby Roha has agreed to share her story,” said Cerne. “She will be introduced by her mother, Nerissa Duhaymas, who will talk about how she nurtured her daughter’s suc-cess.”

The keynote speaker at AWE this year is Jo Packham. Packham, who was featured in the January issue of the “Costco Connec-tions” magazine, has been a leading innova-tor in the handmade publishing market for over 30 years. She will share her up-and-down journey from small business owner to Editor in Chief of the Where Women Cre-ate magazine series, which includes Where Women Create, Where Women Cook and Where Women Create Business. “Her en-thusiasm and encouragement for women to follow their dreams is so inspiring,” said Whittaker. “Whether you’re a crafter want-ing to market your wares, a beginner cook or a gourmet chef, new to the world of business or an old hand at marketing your-self, you’ll find Jo’s words speak to you.”

Another new feature at AWE this year will be on-site child care, which will be pro-vided by Girl Scouts from Troops 4019 and 4004. “We heard moms of young children couldn’t attend in the past due to not having a sitter, “ said Cerne. “ “So older Girl Scouts and their mothers have gener-ously offered their skills to care for your little ones.” The childcare will be free on first-come, first-served basis, and children should be out of diapers and bring their

own snacks. The Troops will accept dona-tions for their child care services, as they are fundraising to attend two Girl Scout camp-ing events in northern Alaska in early June.

T h e Alaska Wo m e n’s Expo is a project of Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation, with support from Bartlett Regional Hospital, Alaska USA, Coeur Alaska, and Raintree Quilting. For more information, contact Whittaker at 463-5704, visit www.brhfoundation.org or email [email protected].

It’s nearly spring in Southeast Alaska and this time of year contractors are

o f t e n asked, “What is the best decking

material for the region?” Decking materials range from natural wood to

manufactured c o m p o s i t e s made from r e c y c l e d m a t e r i a l s . When it comes to selection a lot of things need to be c o n s i d e r e d , i n c l u d i n g the homeowner’s p r e f e r e n c e s , maintenance, costs, and the general advantages and dis-advantages of each material under the advisement of your contractor. Each material performs differently and can be used

in multiple ways to obtain what the homeowner is trying to accomplish. I will explore composite, natural wood,

treated wood, membrane, flashing and attachment details.

A lot of composite decking materials are on the market now and all seem to have the same low maintenance claims. Many state they are resistant to mold and mildew, stains, scratches, splitting and impervious

to water and insects. In the Alaskan climate all of these claims seem to hold true with the new generations of composite decking as long as they are cleaned and maintained regularly. Each composite decking material should be cleaned twice a year, usually spring and fall to maintain their great look and durability throughout the years. Although composite decks are mold and mildew resistant, this does not mean mold and mildew will not grow on the material. Mold and mildew will grow on the microfilm of the material and will eventually affect the composite itself if

not cleaned regularly. A light detergent and a soft brush with a garden hose will easily clean the deck.

Composite decking can be fastened to the structure in multiple ways. Face fastening is the most common which is basically a fastener through the face of the material into the structure. Composites can also be fastened with hidden fasteners or clips. Hidden fasteners are fasteners that are placed on the side of the material and into the structure. Clips are used to grip the groove on the side of the composite (must be ordered with these grooves) and fastened to the structure. Spacing is key when using composite. You can find special spacing tools to create hidden fasteners or clip fasteners, making spacing nearly automatic. When face fastening a composite material I will use a carpenters pencil to space the decking which gives it about 3/8 inch spacing. When using a composite decking, the structure or deck joists need to be spaced less than when you are using a natural wood or treated wood decking, at about

12” on center which will add some material costs and labor costs.

Natural wood decking material has its benefits and drawbacks as well. Most natural woods used for decking like cedar, redwood, teak, and other exotic species have natural chemicals contained within the wood to deter rot, moisture, and insects. Wood materials like common lumber will have to be treated with a sealer or finish to be impervious to moisture. Although cedar has a natural chemical to deter rot, I always use a sealer or stain that is able to breathe so moisture that gets into the wood can escape. Cedar is a popular choice in Southeast Alaska because it can be harvested regionally and supplied locally which cuts down on transporta-

tion costs, environmental costs, and keeps people employed locally. Natural wood decks need to be cleaned, stained, and sealed regularly which takes a little more maintenance than the composite decking. The color of the stain can also be

changed if you do not like the color or are going want to change the look. This is an important point to consider when comparing cedar to composite decking, as composite stays the same color throughout its life and cannot

be changed without changing the composite entirely.

The fastening on natural wood decks can be done exactly like the composite decking either face fastened or hidden fastened. Both ways of fastening are the

same as the composite decking, although the use of clips is not common with wood decking. Another advantage lumber has over composite wood is that it can span a greater distance between deck joists saving on structural materials and labor. But this can be offset by the fact that natural lumber may have warping, cupping, or crowning sometimes making it a challenge to work with.

Pressure treated and Sunwood (surface treated lumber) material is also a popular option. Neither pressure treated lumber or Sunwood receives stain or finish well, so what you see is what you get. It is possible to paint, but it can only be painted with the right preparation using a water based acrylic latex paint.

Membrane decks are the great idea in this climate especially a second story deck since the underside of the deck can be used as a covered patio or deck below. Membrane decks must be maintained and cleaned regularly to allow them to be in the weather for many years.

“I always use a sealer or stain that is able

to breathe so moisture that gets into the wood can escape.”

There are other variations on membrane decks that incorporate concrete, concrete pavers, and other materials and all are good options for a deck on a second story.

I spoke of fastening systems above (face, hidden, and clip) but the fasteners themselves are as important as the fastening systems. Some fasteners are not compatible with pressure treated lumber and the chemicals in the lumber will eat or corrode many fasteners resulting in a failing deck. Stainless steel fasteners are recommended for pressure treated lumber. Stainless steel fasteners are also recommended for cedar because other fasteners tend to stain or discolor the cedar.

I have also used hot dipped galvanized and aluminum hidden fasteners to fasten cedar successfully. Composite decking has many composite-specific fasteners and though they’re compatible with composite, be sure to confirm the fasteners are compatible with the structure the deck will be fastened

to, usually pressure treated lumber. The clip systems with the grooved composite decking I have found to work very well, although every joist should be clipped to eliminate squeaks and clicks.

The connection between the deck and the home is the most critical part of the system. Rain splashing up from the deck can greatly affect the structure of a home. The deck is usually fastened to a board hung off the h o m e whether it’s a first story deck or second story deck. The board, also known as, a ledger s h o u l d be held off the home with a ledger

bracket. A common bracket for this

application is the Stratton bracket which

holds the ledger board ½ inch off the house to allow water to

drain behind the deck. I still like to install an ice and water shield

behind the siding that the brackets fasten through to eliminate any water that may find its way behind the siding.

Decks require regular maintenance. No matter what type of material you decide to use for your deck, whether a new deck or refurbishing an old, it will be important to develop a regular maintenance schedule. Clean your deck regularly, stain and finish it on a regular basis and you will have a deck to enjoy for many years to come.

IF YOU’VE NEVER ADVERTISED WITH US BEFORE, IT’S A GREAT TIME TO START!

Thank You so much for making the 2013 High Gravity Games a reality! Our 3rd annual event was a smashing success, with dozens of participants competing at the highest levels of athletic achievement and goofiness! A great time was had by all, and we were able to help out a great organization.

Southeast Alaska Independent Living, SAIL, will be the recipient of the funds raised by registration, hot dog and Alaska Brewing beer sales, and ticket

buyers for the Keg Toss – in all, over $4,000 raised!

As you know, SAIL is an amazing or-

ganization that allows many people in our community to lead more indepen-

dent lives. They also participated in the competition, with two teams that included Olympians Joe Tompkins and

Hilary Lindh.

All of the participants had a great time,

and all the spectators did too, helped in no small part by the festive atmosphere in the Alaskan Brewing Beer Garden and the occasionally sunny weather! Costumes consisted of giant albino salamanders, six-foot-tall pansies, and Xena - Warrior Princess to name a few!

None of this would have happened without the support of local organi-zations and of course the work of the many volunteers and crew of Alaskan Brewing Company and Eaglecrest. The Eaglecrest folks make this event fun and safe every year with a great course for racing, and provide extra bus runs for customers of the beer garden.

Once again, THANK YOU so much for making this event a huge success, see you next year and cheers!

3rd Annual High Gravity GamesPhotos by Pat Barry

The 3rd Annual High Gravity Games took place on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Eaglecrest Ski Area. The event was sponsored by the Alaskan Brewing Co, Eaglecrest, Marlintini’s, KATH to name a few. The games consisted of outdoor games, an Alaskan Beer garden from Marlintini’s and a special Alaskan après ski menu. All proceeds from the beer garden and the day’s ac-tivities were donated to the Brewery’s selected nonprofit – SAIL, Inc.

The only people who benefit when a house is built are the family members who get to

live there, and the builder who con-structed and sold the home, right?

Wrong. The positive impact of new residential construction is far-reach-ing, bringing benefits to families, businesses and services throughout a community immediately, as well as for years to come.

According to economists at the Na-tional Association of Home Builders, the one-year estimated local impacts of building 100 single-family homes in a typical metro area include $21.1 million in local income, $2.2 million in taxes and other local government revenue, and 324 local jobs.

But what does that economic impact

mean in the real, day-to-day lives of community residents?

Just think about it. When a family moves to a community and buys a new house, they will likely shop at local stores to buy furniture and ac-cessories to decorate the home. They will fill their car’s gas tank at local gas stations so they can get to the stores, have local mechanics work on the car when it breaks down or needs the oil changed, or buy a new car at a local dealer when it’s time to replace the old one.

The family may need to hire local companies for regular services to maintain their home, such as land-scaping, house cleaning, pet sitters or yard upkeep.

The children will enroll in local

schools. This increases enrollment, meaning more teachers, janitors, caf-eteria workers and other school sup-port staff will need to be hired. Those kids will also join sports leagues and other activities, buy equipment and pay registration fees that provide sti-pends for referees and coaches.

All of this economic activity puts in-come into the pockets of local busi-ness owners and their families, who can then afford to go out and spend money themselves, which recycles even more money into the commu-nity’s economy.

The new family also pays local and state taxes. These tax revenues help pay for a wide range of government services, including school teachers, police departments, refuse collec-

tion, parks maintenance and road repairs.

Over the long term, as the families who move into new homes become part of the community, their positive impact continues. Families who buy a newly built home enjoy benefits including safety, amenities, energy efficiency and floor plans to fit a modern lifestyle. But the advantages of new homes extend far beyond the buyers and the builders—residential construction has a positive, direct impact on the local community for years.

The April Showers are so refresh-ing… The wash

away the last remnants of dirty snow from the yard and reveal hid-den objects in the yard from the fall. It’s time for scrubbing cupboards and repotting plants, sorting piles of children’s

clothing and digging through the freezer. The extra daylight gives just enough light to invigorate a wealth of projects, and sun-light to see dust after a dark Alaskan winter. I want to share a few of my favorite tips and recipes for cleaning and eating! I recently had shoulder surgery and wow, having your right arm out of commission for any length of time in a busy home can be a crazy thing. While my family did amazing things while I was down and out I did find my plants extra thirsty and a few cleaning projects to get started on before summer hits (and you want to do nothing but escape to the beach or boat). Spring is a great time to start some indoor herbs for your windowsill. I always start with cleaning pots, painting and seal-ing terra cotta and repotting houseplants before outdoor plants get going.

Did you know there is an actual NASA based formula for how many plants per

square inch you should have for indoor air quality? Neither did I but now I’m in the know and will try my best to keep them happy and healthy!

Top Plants for Reducing Indoor Air Pollution

• Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)

• Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema modestum)

• Dracaena (Dracaena sp.). Especially Red-Edged Dracaena (Dracaena marginata), Janet Craig (Dracaena deremensis ‘Janet Craig’), Warneckii (Dracaena deremensis ‘Warneckii’), and Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans ‘massangeana’)

• English Ivy (Hedera helix)

• Ficus, or Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina)

• Gerbera Daisy (Gerbera jamesonii)

• Golden Pothos (Epipiremnum aureum)

• Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum sp.)

• Philodendron (Philodendron sp), particu-larly Heartleaf (Philodendron scandens ‘oxycardium’), Selloum (Philodendron selloum), and Elephant Ear Philodendron (Philodendron domesticum)

• Pot Mum (Chrysanthemum morifolium)

• Snake Plant, or Mother-In-Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’)

• Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

For best results, have at least one six-inch plant for every 100 square feet. Yes you read it correctly… I’d say a few rooms in the house might meet this level but even I don’t have this many houseplants. and ficus and ivy do nothing but perish a feverish death in my care… I’ve tried for years and now figure it’s better to spare us both the misery and disappointment. I like to round all my plants up before repotting and place in the shower for cleaning the leaves as well as giv-ing the roots a nice soak before repotting.

For the house, I love using Charlie’s soap, it’s amazing. I bought a four gallon bucket of it from Amazon, it’s amazing in all types of washers, and at 17 cents a wash it gets out everything! And I mean everything, my clothes are softer, my towels pick up water easier and you can make stain spray with it in a spray bottle. It’s a must have for any parent or anyone looking for a scent free, hypoallergenic and earth friendly product.

I love using vinegar and thanks to the drug like tendencies of Pinterest decided to make my own citrus cleaner. Start by soaking cit-rus peels in vinegar for a few weeks in a ma-son jar, strain out any chunks or pith that might clog your sprayer and put straight into the spray bottle. It’s amazing on glass and for an extra streak free shine use news-

paper instead of a paper towels or rags. For extra fun jobs like the refrigerator, sprinkle in some baking soda and then let the kids make foam, they love this part.

So what do I eat when I’m scouring my kitchen cabinets with tooth brushes and asking my girls to fill bags with toys to give away?

I love quick, easy and healthy… I do power foods for the kids with bananas dipped in fresh peanut butter and wheat germ. You can also make sushi logs by rolling the ba-nana in peanut butter, then breadcrumbs, wheat germ and coconut then slice, serve with chopsticks and jelly dipping sauce.

While were snacking for a little energy boost I love finding all the leftover unused condiments in my fridge and lonely veg-etables… This calls for a , I really don’t make mine the same way twice… even when I’m adapting a recipe from one of my favorite cookbooks. Savoring the Day by Judith Benn Hurley, it’s a great book mixing health, yoga, wellness and flavorful recipes. The great thing with Minestrone is as long as you have the basics.. the actual ingredients are subject to what you have on hand to begin with.
