Dear Friends,

There is much to share and anticipate this month so grab acup of coffee and read on!

0VER 90 SHINE IN THE LIGHTHOUSE

Robert gives you all the detail in his Blarney update, butit is worth underlining how there are real signs that TheLighthouse is beginning to capture the imagination as analternative way to learn and worship, and thereforeconnect with those we wouldn’t normally see at ourusual Sunday morning services. After a slow start it isgreat to see the perseverance of the team under AprilGunn’s leadership, lead us into a new and excitingministry.

BUSY BUSY – TOO BUSY?The Lighthouse is an example of what Carrigrohane Union does well –reaching out innovatively. Every church in the Union has people of energyand passion and Robert and I are thrilled to minister into this situation, andof course do our fair share of generating ideas! BUT, and note it is a bigbut, there is a real danger we can lose the run of ourselves, or rather God.We run ahead of His plans and purposes. We wear ourselves out in thedoing, instead of loving Him for Himself and enjoying the freedom Hewants to integrate into the whole of our lives. Consequently, we lack thefruit of the Spirit in our personal experience. Our mission as a church lacksthe expectation of God to touch lives and turn them around for theKingdom. In the words of Galatians:“After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to finish with humaneffort? …Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you byobserving the law, or by believing what you what you heard?” (Galatians 3v 3 & 5)

The law was of course the law of the Jews, but all of us can easily findourselves living by “laws”, ideas and attitudes that spring from within andthe world around us. That is why we are excited to have John Hughes fromNew Wine come and speak to us at the end of April. For John and NewWine represent a call to join in the eventfulness of the Holy Spirit in ourlives. Robert and I ask that, as much as possible, every one of us takes thisopportunity to get along to most if not all of the sessions details of whichyou will find elsewhere in this Newsletter.

March’s Lighthouse :“The Lighthouse Easter celebration - Wow! So much enthusiasm! So manypeople and lots of happy noise and movement around the place! We havejust had our Easter Lighthouse and there were a record 94 people in thechurch, with lots of new and familiar faces. It has been just such a joy to beable to be a part of Lighthouse and seeing the numbers attending it grow. Some of you are probably thinking, so what is this Lighthouse thing allabout. Well Lighthouse is ‘Messy Church’ so as well as having songs, prayers,Bible stories, all of which regularly happen at church services, there are alsolots of different activities through which the Bible story may be explored. This month we did such things as put red paint handprints on the shape of across to show how Jesus died to forgive our sins, fold and cut a piece ofpaper to give lots of different shapes which could be used to tell the story ofGood Friday and also spell out the word ‘Alive’, make a model of the emptytomb, an Easter card to help usshare the ‘Good News’ with othersand ice and decorate biscuits toshare together at refreshmenttime, as well as other games andactivities. The Lighthouse is aimed at familieswith children 3-12 years, with aplay area for younger children.”Why not come and join us at thenext one which takes place onSunday 14th April at 3.30 – 5pm.PDF Creator - PDF4Free v3.0 http://www.pdf4free.com

THE OVERFLOW AND NEW WINEPersonally New Wine has been a voice calling me to keep drinking fromthe Spirit and in 2008 at the annual Sligo conference John Hughes gavethe daily Bible readings. God got to work that week and combined withthe sabbatical I took, the summer of 2008 was a time of completerenewal – in body, mind and spirit. The upshot has been I default tobelief instead of doubt and enjoy my ministry more than ever, all ofwhich I thank God for while still of course aware of my failings! Which initself is a huge part of this deepened experience – that we don’t have tohave everything worked out. It is a ministry of grace to let Him workthrough us for a busyness that springs from the overflow of His power atwork in us.

With nearly a hundred people from Corkgoing to the New Wine conference in Sligolast summer, John’s visit is open to everyonefrom any and every church to consider whatit means today to be ‘A Church Open to theHoly Spirit’. As a sign of the unity of theSpirit we are sharing the leading of theworship and seminars with members of CorkGrace Church who use the Church of the Resurrection Blarney twice amonth midweek.

HEARING GOD—HEARING EACH OTHER!THE EASTER VESTRY—MORE

THAN JUST AN AGM!

A Church open to the Holy Spirit means that the work of the Vision andDevelopment Group (VDG) must discern what God wants. As part of thatdiscernment over the next few months the VDG members are going toreview the ministries and the life of the Union – it will be an exercise inlistening which we will then reflect on through scripture and prayer.

So at the Easter Vestry on the 15th April (8pm in the Parish Centre) thefocus will be on how the VDG aim to progress this Listening work.

Of course with elections taking place, the usual reminder to pray aboutwhether you might serve on the Select Vestry this coming year...as oneof the 12 members or as a Church Warden.

BE PART OF A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

During the United Celebration on Sunday 7th April(11am) we will be joined by theBallincollig Community Forum / Linking Hands Projectwho are attempting to break a Guinness World Recordfor the most hand-prints in one place.

The aim of the project is to reach out far and wide, home and abroad, get everyone involved, and in the process, pay tribute to the communityspirit shown by so many clubs, organisations, schools and groups in thearea. They are asking everyone to buy a square for 1 euro, draw theoutline of their open hand (they can be decorated and signed,) as asymbol of friendship and togetherness. The squares will be sewn togetherand made into banners tied together and displayed along the main streetin Ballincollig in July. Moneys raised will go to 2 local charities, “Headway”a rehabilitation training centre for adults with acquired brain injury, andthe Gunners Special Olympic football team who play and train on ourNorth Field.

After the service there will be an opportunity to draw your hand and bepart of this Guinness World Record attempt, but more important still. Bepart of a great community initiative.

Every blessing and prayer, Ian

Cork Indigent Roomkeepers’ Society

has been in existence for over 200 years and aims to assist financiallythose in need in the parishes of the United Diocese of Cork, Cloyne &Ross. Despite the gallant work of our collectors and donors the Societycurrently runs at a deficit which is eating into its reserves. In an effort toraise extra funds, committee member & Hon Treasurer, Noel Barber, with his wife Gillian, are at their own expense walking the final section ofthe Camino de Santiago de Compostella (The Way of St James)in Northern Spain in May 2013. There will be sponsorship forms in thechurches—and all donations are mostwelcome.

The Parish regularly supports this Society inour annual charity giving at the end of eachyear.
