DEAR LITTLE CHAPEL FAMILY, On Sunday, April 8th we will celebrate along with millions of other Christians the most glorious day of the Christian faith…Christ Is Risen! Christ is risen indeed. As you read the following words from Mitch Finley, may you be so inspired to tell the world. We make our way through Lent, and lo and behold, all of a sudden it’s Easter Sunday! “Ah”, we say, “Spring is here.” Baskets of candy and gaily wrapped chocolate rabbits for the wee ones. Easter egg hunts. In the old days, the ladies might have a new “bonnet” for Easter. Ah, Easter. Do we stop to reflect that Easter is so much more than this? Easter Sunday makes an eternally cosmic explosion at the heart of the universe and all creation. Resurrection! Ah, yes, Jesus was raised from the dead. Wake up, cries the guardian of the dawn. Resurrection! Do we simply smile sweetly at the children with their chocolate bunnies and let it go at that? “Resurrection,” of course is a troublesome word. Truth to tell, we don’t really know what it means. “Resurrection” happened to Jesus, and it will happen to us, but we don’t yet know exactly what it means. We call the Resurrec-tion a mystery, but that solves nothing because this mystery is an event that blasts an open-ing in the created world order where God slips through with wonders to tell. That’s what Easter is, a wonder to tell, a mystery we begin to experience even now. It is a mystery that fires the faith of those who believe in this “first raised” Jesus, and who believe that after their death, they will see the face of God. A wonder to tell, so let’s tell it…near and far. I hope you will join us on Easter Sunday at 6:30 a.m. for the Community Sunrise Service on the beach and then again at 10:30 a.m. in our sanctuary as we celebrate together the glorious news…HE IS RISEN!

Dear friends in Christ: As our calendars turn to April and the days get longer and our beautiful beach town comes alive with more spring-time activities that remind us of God‟s eternal promises, our attention as liturgically-practicing Christians turns to the most holy time of the year: Palm Sunday, the first days of Holy Week, the Great Three Days, and finally, the most joyous celebration of the year, Easter. As is always the case, the music in our worship of God reflects these holy days and paints a vivid picture of the final days of Christ‟s earthly life. In order to fully cele-brate the true power of the resurrection of our Lord, we must walk the Via Dolorosa with him (and other count-less Christians) first. At the beginning of Holy Week, Palm Sunday, the Little Chapel Children‟s Choir will lead us in worship with their lively procession with palms and then offer a beautiful anthem recreating the joyful ho-sannas raised in praise of Christ. The Little Chapel Chancel Choir will sing a grand setting of “When I survey the wondrous cross,” and we will sing majestic Palm Sunday hymns. We are starting something new this year during the first weekdays of Holy Week. Each day at lunchtime on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during Holy Week, we will gather for worship in the sanctuary. These services will feature lessons and homilies about the last days of Christ on earth, providing ample time for quiet reflection. Familiar hymns will be sung relating to the important truths we learn during these Holy Week services. During the Maundy Thursday service of Holy Communion and the ancient office of Tenebrae (Latin for darkness or shadows), we will hear seven lessons describing the last moments of our Savior‟s life before his crucifixion. Each of these lessons will be followed by a musical piece: either an anthem, solo or hymn reflecting on the words which had just been read. The choir will prepare us for receiving Holy Communion by singing Mozart‟s Ave verum corpus. At the end of this service, in darkness, the furnishings of the church will be removed and the stark emptiness of the chancel will remind us that in order for God to save us, Jesus had to be removed from this earth and from God, through death on the cross. Good Friday‟s service will be a somber observance of penitence, with lessons and hymns reminding us of Christ‟s greatest sacrifice. Of course, all of these Holy Week services would be quite dreadful and disheartening if we did not know what followed on the third day. But as resurrection Christians, we know that Christ arose on Sunday morning, and we will celebrate the victory over death, the grave and sin with festival worship services on Sunday, April 8. The first service will be on the beach at sunrise and will feature leadership by clergy and musicians from each of the Wrightsville Beach area churches. Our own Little Chapel service will be at 10:30 AM in the sanctuary. This ser-vice will feature glorious music for brass quintet, choir, handbells, piano and organ. The festival voluntary will begin at 10:10 AM and all are welcome to come early and enjoy the majestic music of the Easter season for brass and organ. The choir will sing three outstanding anthems with brass and bells and all are welcome to join us in singing the famed Hallelujah chorus from Handel‟s Messiah at the end of the service. As always, Holy Week presents a challenging schedule of rehearsals and services for our volunteer musicians at Little Chapel. I thank them for their dedication all year long, but especially during these weeks that contain the most meaningful and wonderful music of the year. Join me in thanking all of these fine individuals as you see them in church.

STEPHEN MINISTRIES PROGRAM AT LCOB

At its February meeting the Session of Little Chapel

approved to send a group of people to Raleigh on

Saturday, April 28 to attend a half day orientation pro-

gram on Stephen Ministries. What are Stephen Minis-

ters? They are laypeople who receive Christian caregiv-

ing training in their congregation and then provide one-

to-one Christ-centered care to people experiencing a

variety of life‟s difficulties. Each Stephen Minister typi-

cally has one care receiver at a time and meets with that

person once a week.

Stephen Ministers provide high-

quality, one-to-one Christian care to

individuals facing a variety of crises

or life challenges – people who are

experiencing grief, divorce, cancer,

financial difficulties, hospitalization,

chronic illness, job loss, disabilities,

loneliness, a spiritual crisis, or other

life struggles. In addition to caring for members of the

congregation, Stephen Ministers can provide care to

nonmembers, reaching out to unchurched people in

crisis.

If you are interested in attending the half day workshop

in Raleigh at the end of April, please contact Pat Rabun

before April 15th. We have to register in advance for

the workshop.

Our own Heather Bobeck will present her senior recital on Saturday, April 14, at

7:00 PM at Beckwith Hall, on the campus of UNCW. Heather's beautiful soprano

voice has been such a blessing to our congregation and it would be wonderful if we

can pack the house that night, to show our love and support for her. Please mark the

date on your calendar and plan to attend. Many of us attended her junior recital last

year and we were absolutely overwhelmed by her beautiful performance. You will be

blessed!

You may wish to see Heather perform as the fairy godmother in the UNC-W Opera

Outreach Project: “Cinderella,” Saturday – Sunday, April 21 and 22, at the Kenan

Auditorium. Tickets are $10. general public and free to children under 10 and students

with valid UNCW ID.

YEAR TO DATE REPORT THROUGH FEBRUARY 29, 2012

We are pleased to report our offerings and contributions, at $55,300 for the two

months ended February 29th, and our other income, at $9,950, are on plan and are

seen as a great indicator of our financial well-being for the year. With our general

fund expenses of $64,600 for the two months in line with the 2012 Budget, we have

a small surplus year-to-date. Funds are available and adequate to pay for recent re-

pairs to the Narthex, Fellowship Hall, and storage room.

1. Marcia and Pat Rabun have visited 26 homes thus far, in their congregational home visitation process, and have so enjoyed their contacts with those members.

2. Our Christian Education Committee is busily working on a community Easter

Egg Hunt for Saturday, April 7, and an Easter drama by the children during the Sunday School hour on Easter Sunday morning.

3. Session approved the concept of a plan to hire a Christian Education director

for the Little Chapel, and the Christian Education Committee was charged with developing a job description and salary requirements for this position to bring back to the session for final approval.

4. The Little Chapel will host the coffee and doughnuts fellowship time after the

community Easter Sunrise Service on April 8, 6:30 AM. 5. Our next communion service is scheduled for Palm Sunday, April 1, 2012. Our

elders will also be serving our shut-ins with Traveling Communion. 6. The Missions Committee continues its work with the plan to use our facility at

14 W. Fayetteville St. as a Mission House for youth, college, and adult work groups.

7. Personnel and Planning Committee is finalizing the details for hiring an addi-

tional nursery worker for our worship services. 8. During Holy Week, we will have a short service on Monday, Tuesday, and

Wednesday, 12:00 - 12:30, followed by a bag lunch in fellowship hall. 9. Maundy Thursday service is at 7:00 PM, April 5, and the Good Friday service is

at 7:00 PM, April 6.

This third article in our series on protecting your children and teenagers from sexual pred-

ators will focus on the predator. How do you recognize possible predators. What do they

look like? What do they do?

The first thing you should know about sexual predators is they are frequently operating in

plain sight! They work or volunteer in settings that put them in regular, frequent contact

with children/teens. They come across as caring, warm, friendly and giving. In other

words, they can look like great people! Predators are often in positions of authority and

are considered trusted individuals. Predators intentionally place themselves where they

have access and work to ingratiate themselves to potential victims and their families.

Predators will attempt to gain their victim‟s trust by showing special interest in them.

There are many ways this is done, such as getting to know the victims likes and dislikes,

buying gifts, offering ideas, taking them to special events and showing concern for the

victim. At the same time, a predator may develop a relationship with the parents in order

to alleviate any concerns or suspicions the parents might have. Once the trust is estab-

lished the predator gradually increases the inappropriate touch and contact while convinc-

ing the victim the relationship is “special”.

Empower your children by having open communication with them and teaching them to

say “no.” Parents, do not ignore any concerns you may have about anyone involved in

your child/teenager‟s life! The Presbyterian Counseling Center . . . hope and healing for

If you are not giving these coupons to your favorite school, please put these little treasures in the Tileston Toiletry Basket on the mission table. Libby Frye will then deliver them to Tileston Outreach.

The Little Chapel will continue collecting spring and summer clothing for any family member for Tileston Outreach during April and May. Gently used household items are always welcome as well. The driving team will concentrate on 2nd Loaf this summer and resume weekly trips to Tileston after Labor Day.

As always, pack all of your gifts in boxes or bags that weigh no more that 15 pounds each. If you have cleaned clothing on hangers, please cover these with a plastic bag also. We want to keep all of your lovely donations clean while they are being transported to Tileston.

If you have larger items such as furniture and appliances that need to be picked up by the Tileston van, please call Sister Isaac‟s office directly and leave a message that includes a list of what you wish to donate. The phone number is 762-5491, exten-sion 135. A volunteer will return your call within a few days and make arrange-ments for a date to have your donations transported downtown.

TOILETRIES FOR TILESTON are always welcome. These may be left in the basket on the mission table any Sunday. You may also leave them in a bag on the Tileston bench.

Thank you to our Team Tileston drivers for March: Ellen Dudley, Mary & Pat Roche, Susan Long and George & Linda Johnson. The Mission Committee would like to thank all of the drivers as well as all LCOB members who made donations last month.

Tileston Outreach will close for a long Easter break at noon on March 29 and will remain closed until Tuesday morning, April 10. HENCE, DO NOT LEAVE ANY DONATIONS ON THE TILESTON BENCH FROM MARCH 26 UNTIL EASTER. We cannot deliver donations downtown while Tileston is closed. Things are happening at our Habitat for Humanity house! Ground was broken for the

home of Alicia, her son, and two daughters in mid-March and is progressing well. Her

3-bedroom home is part of an exciting new community called the Cottages at Corner-

stone, where all the homes are built by Habitat volunteers.

For this Ecumenical Build, teams from nine churches are sharing the work, so we have

only two more workdays scheduled. On May 12, please join us as we get a short lesson

in how to put up vinyl siding, then actually do it, or at least help people who are quick

learners!). Some siding will have been installed on the previous Saturday, so we will just

wrap that up. Don‟t shy away because this is something you never imagined doing…

experienced folks will be on hand to help those of us who have never done anything like

this before.

On Saturday, June 2, Little Chapel volunteers will be wrapping up projects like porches

and hardware. Please sign up for either day on the sheet in the narthex. For details,

Last year was an historic one for weather-related disasters. Japan is still recovering from the destruction of an

earthquake and tsunami. Devastation in our country ranged from massive flooding, wiping out acres of farmland,

to drought and wildfires, to nearly 1,500 tornadoes. But, in the midst all this tragedy,

Presbyterians continue to join with Christians from many denominations to help those in

need through our gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing. We show God‟s love to those

who are experiencing the trauma of natural and economic disasters and to those who live

without the basic necessities of life.

Our gifts, also, help community development programs. With funding from the One Great

Hour of Sharing, the PC(USA) Self-Development of People program provides grants for

projects that are owned and controlled by the people who will benefit directly from them.

Each project must address and correct long-term conditions that keep people bound by

poverty and oppression. One such project has allowed a group of fishermen and shrimpers

in Louisiana to recently form a fisheries cooperative, so that they can rebuild their lives after

Hurricane Katrina. Projects as this are helping people all over the world become more

self-sufficient.

Through our gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing special offering on

Easter, April 8, we are reminded that through the simple act of sharing, we are blessed and

experience God‟s abundance in so many ways. God is calling us to share our abundance with

the millions of our brothers and sisters, who are victims of disasters, oppression and hunger.

May we all give generously.

The Little Chapel Boardwalkers invite

you to lace up your walking shoes and join us

Saturday, April 21 to participate in the 2012

Wilmington Walk MS. There are also many

opportunities to volunteer for those who prefer

to work rather than walk!

Why We Walk for MS...

The Little Chapel Boardwalkers team was created in 2007 after our 4th church

member was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Because we choose to walk for those who sometimes can't, because we CAN

WALK, because we choose to donate to Walk MS, we are getting closer to the

hour when no one will have to hear the words, "You have MS." The National

Multiple Sclerosis Society will use funds collected from the Walk to support re-

search for a cure, advocacy efforts, and to provide programs and services which

address the needs of people living with MS today.

A diagnosis of MS is pretty scary and having multiple sclerosis means that you

may not be able to walk when you wake up. Or that you may suddenly have

impaired vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. The

symptoms of MS are different, and devastating, for everyone - the only certainty

is that it will affect yet another person every hour of every day. We are fighting

this disease so that we may one day create a world free of MS.
