The Earth Day weekend fun rides (~ 20 miles each) will begin and end at Golden Oldy Cyclery – the sustainable museum of sustainable transportation (www.goldenoldy.org). The museum, which features Victorian bicycles and Victorian ladies tricycles will have a short open house after the ride. While most folks find the old penny farthing (high wheel) bikes to be quite interesting, they really go wild when they see the ladies’ high wheel tricycles. Ladies were not allowed to have their ankles show in the 1880s, thus they could not discretely stradle a penny farthing. The trike solved this protocol issue.

The museum also features a gallery of framed photos of cycling in Colorado during The 19th century. Some of these will startle you with the activities which were done in Colorado upon bikes.

This past winter I have been doing construction to make the museum even more sustainable. Beyond the super-insulation and sealing, with solar pv panels which had previously gotten the home to be better than “net zero” energy, the pictured “passive solar/ greenhouse/ solar food dryer addition” should allow the total removal of the natural gas line while maintaining a comfortable home/ museum, powering 2 plug in cars, and getting a check each year from Xcel for the approximately 9000 kwh of power I over-produce and sell back to the utility.

Both Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, the rides leave from 17224 west 17th place, Golden at 9:30 (sharp) to tour and discuss our earth and renewable, earth sustaining Locations in and near Golden. 720-497-1100. Helmets required.

Ride Leaders NeededRick Clauder

On February 23rd we ride coordinators met at Patty Gaspar’s house to brain storm to both educate new ride coordinators and to generate new ideas on how to increase ride leadership. Besides Patty, new ride coordinators Gaar Potter South Fun Ride Coordinator and me, Rick Clauder as North Fun Ride Coordinator. I will also take over Intermediate Ride coordination from Dale Trone who is stepping down this June. Also present were Joyce Terlaje, Wednesday ride coordinator, Melba Bouquet, Roses and Leisure Ride Coor-dinator, and Dick Plastino who filled in for Kathy Basel the Mountain Ride Coordinator. John Campbell also was present, representing the Board.

Joyce, Patty, Gaar and I were amazed that the Roses and the Mountain Bike schedules were already partially filled. If only the job of the Wednesday, Fun South, Fun North and Intermediate Rides were so easy.

I personally thank both Lois Kahn, Marty Krusko, and Howard Bagdad who have spent so much time in the past calling and recalling people to try to get others to choose to lead. It’s no wonder that after so many years of work we’ve burnt these people out. Although I know there were others who did the same I only have been in the club since ‘04 so if I overlooked others who have done the job I’m sorry.

We need to make the job of these positions easier for the coordinators. We have many on our rides who know the routes and want to ride but they hold back on volunteering, hoping someone else will lead.

Please avoid excuses as there are many resources available, such as map of rides on the web site, Leader Instructions and other ride leaders that would be happy to advise, for first time leaders to have a successful ride.

Please do your part to make this a great riding season and help ease the load on our ride coordinators. Contact information for the coordinators is listed on the left side of page 2 in the newsletter.

Meet Gaar PotterSouth Fun Coordinator

Gaar Potter has been a DBTC member since 2004. A Denver native (George Washington HS), he served as Club Secretary for 2006, and has been the bookkeeper and bike box coordinator ever since. A frequent ride leader, he is known for indecipherable maps and obscure ride routes, mainly on streets, and unique sense of humor. Nobody remembers his epic 2010 Cemetentury, since only 3 people showed up and nobody finished. He still has the map though! He is no Lois Kahn, but he will do his best as the new South Fun Ride Coordinator – [email protected] or 303-691-0938 to schedule your ride.

New Format for ROAD AND INT RIDESPatty Gaspar

You will notice that every Saturday there is a ride listed: ROAD/INT/FUN H2-20-SW 9:00 AM SHOW & GO and on Sunday: ROAD/INT/FUN H2-28-NW 10:00 AM SHOW & GO. They have different times and start locations. These rides will be show and go and riders are advised to download map #55 for Saturday or map #54 for Sunday from the website before going. They will be primarily for the ROAD riders and INT riders wanting a challenge. FUN riders are welcome, but the pace will be fast and no one will wait for you to catch-up.

In addition to these rides, Donald Schmertz will continue to lead his rides from various locations. His rides involve use of a paceline and he tends to do a lot of climbing in the foothills. All rides will regroup as necessary. Some of them will be in the newsletter and some will be posted on the Yahoo group and MeetUp group. Contact me at [email protected] if you would like to add a ROAD ride to the schedule.

INT ride leaders who want to lead a less ag-gressive ride should contact Rick Clauder ([email protected]) to get your rides in the newsletter. The deadline for May will be the 10th, but starting in May (for June) it will the 20th.

We will continue to have FUN SOUTH and NORTH rides. Many of our riders prefer to ride at the 10 to 12 mile an hour pace on the bike trails and less traveled streets. And, they like to know that lunch will follow. However, we need ride leaders. Without leaders, you’ll be left in the dust by the road riders. [email protected] and [email protected] are the contacts. The ride can be as simple or as complex as you want.

Crested Butte Play in the Snow WeekendEllen Chilikas

Two dozen members enjoyed a long weekend in February in Crested Butte. All agreed this is one of the most beautiful places we have visited. We had lots of op-tions. Besides the dessert happy hour at Ruth and Skip’s house the first night, the happy hour at Donita’s the second night and the catered lunch at the Magic Meadows Yurt; people went downhill skiing, back country touring, telemark skiing, snow shoeing and skiing at the Nordic center. We explored dirt roads, backcountry trails and perfectly groomed trails - there was something for everyone.

A special thanks to our guides, Ruth and Skip, who pro-vided local knowledge of trails and restaurants, and who led a great snowshoe trek up to Long Lake.

Utah Parks Sampler Tour Multi-sport: Road Biking and HikingJune 16-23, 2012$550/person double occupancy – hotel lodgingEllen Chilikas and Ruth BerkshireONLY 4 SPACES LEFT

We will be playing in both Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon Na-tional Parks. Both of these parks have unique and drop dead gor-geous scenery - you will not be disappointed! Both hiking and bik-ing options will be offered. Some days we may bike in the morning and hike in the afternoon (or vice versa). For those who only want to bike, there will be a cycling option every day. Rides will be at the Intermediate level and are for independent riders.

The trip cost includes several happy hours and a dinner - break-fasts are not included (since our hotels don’t provide them) but there are places nearby to buy food, and the rooms in Capitol Reef have refrigerators and microwaves.

To save your spot, send a check for $150 to Ellen Chilikas at PO Box 471803, Aurora, CO 80047, along with the filled out tour forms located here: http://www.dbtc.org/OTT_Index.aspx. All moneys are transferable but not refundable. Contact Ellen with questions at [email protected].

You can choose any of the 40 rides available from as short as 5.5 miles to as long as 29 miles or combine two or more rides. They range from easy to difficult with elevation changes from as little as 330 feet to as challenging as 5200 feet – there is something for everyone. Maps rate every trail as to difficulty and endurance required.

I will be camping at a campground, but there are several hotels in the area if you prefer. The world is at your wheels. The final ride selection for the group will be made when we know the riding level of those coming. There may be more than one option some days.

Contact Richard Quick [email protected] or 303-466-4008. I’m at the REI flagship store from open to close every Thursday volunteering at the ORIC next to the maps if you want to talk about the options.
