Assalamu Alaikum

Welcome back for Term 2. I hope all students, staff and parents had a safe and relaxing holiday. It is great to see our students and staff return from the holiday looking refreshed and prepared for another exciting term of teaching and learning.

Term 2 means that students will be involved in examinations, NAPLAN tests, Primary Canberra camp, ICAS competitions Year 10 students will be going for their two weeks Work Experience and Year 12 will sit mid-year VCE Exams. This term is a very busy time but I am confident that their teachers and students will successfully complete all tasks and enjoy all their subject activities at Ilim College.

Many thanks to the parents who attended parent-teacher interviews held on the 26th of March, in term one. From a parent and student perspective I hope you gained some valuable advice which may lead to new goal setting for term 2.

I would like to inform you that all students are now required to wear the winter uniform in terms 2 and 3.

I am pleased to inform you that we are planning to complete the Science and Language Building by mid August 2010.

It is a good news that we are commencing the new Multipurpose Hall Building construction very soon at Ilim College. All construction programs are successfully proceeding ahead of schedule.

At Ilim College we require the valued assistance of parents in disciplining our students and we would appreciate any further suggestions regarding school matters.

A great deal of noise and disruption is caused at the end of the day with a build up of parents that enter the school early. We kindly ask parents to wait outside or in their cars if they arrive before 3:25pm. Thank you for your co-operation.

CHILDREN MUST NOT BE DROPPED OFF EARLIER THAN

8:15AM AND MUST BE PICKED UP NO LATER THAN 4:00PM.

There is no supervision available before and after these times unless children are placed in after school care. For the safety of your child(ren) please ensure you adhere to the times.

Urgent Attention! Medication Authorisation Forms

Parents should fill out an authorisation form which is available at the office for students on medication.

STUDENTS WITH ASTHMA

Students with Asthma should carry their pump with them at all times. However, the school has spare pumps in the sick bay. Please provide an asthma action plan to the office.

STUDENTS WITH ALLERGY

Students with Epipen should pass their Epipen to our school nurse Ms. Nese. An action plan must be also provided to the school.

USING SCHOOL BUS

Bus bookings are now finalised for 2010.

Please remember, all bus bookings are for a full year, however bus fees are charged each term.

All students must be well seated and have their seatbelts fastened whilst travelling on our buses facing the front at all times. There is to be no side sitting or kneeling on seats, standing and walking in the bus as this action is jeopardising the safety of the bus and its passengers. If a child does not follow any of the above rules then, he/she will have their bus service cancelled immediately after 3 offences. Administration

EXTENDED ABSENCES

Should your child be absent from the College for any reason for 5 consecutive days or more, the office should be informed and an “Extended Leave of Absence Form” must be filled out. Otherwise, student’s enrolment may be terminated. Parents should inform the homeroom teachers with notes or certificates of any absences less than 5 days.

If a student is absent half the term or more, considering that they have filled and lodged an “Extended Leave of Absence form” before the actual absence starts, half of their school fees will be reimbursed.

Please note that parent’s are responsible to finalize their account and return their library books and any other school belongings before they leave.

Any absence including overseas trips without notification to school in writing will result in payment in full.

Please note: If a student is absent or is on an extended leave for more then one school term, they will be required to undertake an exam. The results of this exam will determine whether the student is promoted to the next year level or repeat the current year level.

FESTIVAL

A long time ago there was a Pickle world and in Pickle world there lived Mr. Pickle and Mrs. Pickle. Mr. Pickle and Mrs. Pickle lived in a pickle house. Their house was amazing, they had statues and maps of the Pickle World.

One day Mr. Pickle wanted to go to the Pickle Festival. Mrs. Pickle wanted to go too. They looked at the Pickle map to find out how to get to the Festival. When they got there it was closed, so they waited in their car. Once it opened they went into the festival and they went on the pickle Ferris wheel. When they went around to the top all of a sudden they heard a big bang, they were stuck.

When they looked down they got scared. Then the pickle fixer came and tried to fix it but it didn’t work. All of a sudden they saw Super Pickle flying through the sky. Super Pickle was very strong; he pushed the Ferris wheel down. Mr. Pickle and Mrs. Pickle were saved by Super Pickle. After such an exciting day Mr. Pickle and Mrs. Pickle went back home.

CREATIVE STORIES FROM OUR STUDENTS

During the term 1 holidays from 2nd to 4th April the Annual Australian Islamic Conference - 2010 was held at The University of Melbourne. This conference was organised by mercy mission and attended by hundreds of Australian Muslims of all ages. Students from Ilim College also participated in “Budding Writers Competitions”. Three of our young talented students were selected and awarded prizes for their essays. My Muslim Role Model

HAZRAT KHADIJAH: The great Muslim Lady

I am lucky to have the knowledge of a person like Hazrat Khadijah (RA). I may have never met her, or have ever spoken to her, but her character is one that admire so much that I find that every day, I try to be more like her.

Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) was married to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) when she was 40 years old and he was 25 years old. They were married for 25 years and in that time they had six children; Qasim and Abdullah (also known as Tahir and Tayyib) (who both died at young age), Zainab, Umm-Kulthum, Ruqaiyyah and Fatimah (R.A.A). Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) passed away on 10th Ramadan in the tenth year of Hijrah, 620 CE, at the age of 65. Her death was a great loss to the Prophet (S.A.W). He said, “I cannot bear the scene, I believe that Allah has kept much good in it.”

Through out her life, Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) did many things for the good of mankind. She often put her own needs aside so that she could help her loved ones. I sometimes have trouble doing the very things that Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) could do with such ease. When everyone was going through a time of great trouble and heartache, Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) was able to put her own anguish aside and console others.

“When none believed me, Khadijah (R.A) did. She made me a partner in her wealth.” Those are the words of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) about his wife the great Muslim lady, Hazrat Khadija (R.A). She was a very unselfish and altruistic person; this is the very characteristic that is so hard to find in people in today’s day and age.

Overall, Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) is known for her ability to keep on going when times were tough. For me, I feel as though she personifies courage. No matter what hardship or struggle she was going through, Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) was able to find strength within herself and would pray to Allah (S.W.T) for guidance. It is sometimes hard to not feel angry and helpless in times of need and seldom do we think of others when we are in strife, but Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) was able to stand up and stay strong.

We often hear that Hazrat Khadijah (R.A) could have changed the world. I think she did; through her knowledge of Islam and the faith that she gave to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) unconditionally. But most of all, I think she has changed me as a person, and has taught me to believe in myself and to keep going when things are tough.

Living as a Muslim in Australia

Latest fashions, hippest music, setting trends, hitting the beach and going out – how to cope with this modern way of life while being a Muslim in a westernised country like Australia? The balance of being a good Muslim and still fitting in is an issue faced by many Muslims, especially teenagers. Islam is portrayed as a restrictive religion by the media and even ex- Muslims. What happened to Australia being a free country?

Islam in itself is not a religion – it is a way of life; furthermore, it is a way of life without any compulsions. It has been declared in the Quran, “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256). Allah has presented humans with consciousness, the ability to think and make choices, regardless to the country they are living in. The Prophet Muhammad (Sal) is reported to have said, "Among the things that people have found from the words of the previous prophets was: 'If you feel no shame, then do as you wish.'" This is clear Islamic evidence that Islam is a religion of freedom.

As a teenage Muslimah, I find it easier to practice Islam in Australia. I come from a highly superstitious country and I now understand that this kept me away from performing my duties as I should have been. Women are not treated equally as Islam says and children are brought up to fear the community, not Allah’s wrath. I realised that in Australia, everything possible is done to ensure that only the truth is preached, with a minimum addition of personal beliefs and myths. We are given the freedom to put forth our doubts and ask questions that will hopefully clear certain misconceptions. Female Muslims are permitted to where hijab to almost all schools, universities and work places.

But even Australia has its flaws. Australia isn’t wholly multi-cultural as it is said to be. Racism against Muslims in Australia is wide spread. A personal experience of such discrimination is having insolent language targeted at the veiled female students while on a school excursion. It is true that the rights of Muslims are not recognised at times; but when in such a situation, I take it as an opportunity to understand what my rewards will be for going through hardship. “If good befalls you, it grieves them, and if an evil afflicts you, they rejoice at it; and if you are patient and guard yourselves, their scheme will not injure you in any way; surely Allah comprehends what they do” (3:120). Moreover, it makes me feel special in a way, knowing that I am of the fastest growing religion in Australia.

Australia is most certainly a free country and Islam is a free religion. But instead of using this freedom to adopt a modern Australian lifestyle, every Muslim should resist the temptation presented by the Shaytaan and take this freedom as an opportunity to practice Islam in the best possible manner.

Blessing for MankindMy favourite personality is Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.). He was the last messenger of Allah (S.W.T.). When he was small, he was a thoughtful boy. He grew up to be a noble and perfect man. He was kind and loving person. People used to call him Al-Sadiq and Al-Ameen ( the truthful and honest). He always helped the poor and needy peoples.

He used to love children very much. If a child came to him, he would put him in his lap and kiss him. Whenever the Prophet received a new fruit, he always gave it to the children first.

Anas bin Malik (RA) was ten years old. He used to work in the Prophet’s house. Sometimes the Prophet used to send him to buy something. But because Anas bin Malik (RA) was a small boy, he used to forget about what he was supposed to do and joined the boys, who were playing in the street and this made him late. Whenever he used to come back, the Prophet (SAW) never got angry with him. If someone in the family got angry with Anas bin Malik (RA), Prophet would say, “He is just a child”.

The Prophet(SAW) was very forgiving. Once he went to the city of Taif to tell message of Allah to people of Taif. They did not listen to Him. Instead they made fun of Him

and ask the kids to throw rocks on Him. They hurt him so much that His shoes were full of blood. When he went to the garden, angle Jibrial (AS) came to him and said ”If you wish, then I will give the order for two angels to crush the residents of Taif between the two mountains in which it lies.” But Prophet (SAW) said no and prayed for them to become Muslims.

When Prophet came back to Makah as conqueror, all his enemies were in front of him. He could have take revenge from them but he forgave them all.

He was also a very caring husband and loving father. Sometimes he used to help his wives with house chores.He was very patient. When his grandfather, uncle, wife and sons died and the Kuffar teased him a lot but He never cried and complained. He was not only kind to Muslims, but also to non-Muslims. We have so much to learn from our Prophet’s life. He told us the very important message of Allah (S.W.T.). He told us how to practice Islam in our daily lives.

I wish that I and all the Muslims follow his Uswa-e-Hasna, so that we will be successful in this world and the hereafter. Insha Allah.

Parents please be advised that the Saturday Tutoring Classes has now commenced. Application forms are available from the General Office. Please see below for schedule.

Sayın veliler, öğrenciler ve okul çalışanları,

2. döneme hoşgeldiniz. Herkesin güvenli ve eğlenceli bir tatil geçirdiğini ümit ediyorum. Bütün öğrenci ve öğretmenlerimizin yeni bir eğitim ve öğretim dönemine zinde bir şekilde başladıklarını görmekten büyük bir memnuniyet duyuyorum.

2. dönem içinde öğrencilerimiz NAPLAN testi, ilkokul Canberra Kampı, ICAS ve 10. Sınıf öğrencilerinin 2 haftalık okul stajı ve 12. sınıfların yarıyıl VCE imtihanları gibi birçok aktivitilerde bulunacaktır. Bu dönemde öğrencilerimiz çok meşgul olacaktır ama inanıyorum ki bütün öğretmen ve velilerimizin desteğiyle öğrencilerimiz İlim Kolejinde bütün ders branşlarındaki aktiviteleri başarıyla tamamlayacaktır.

Birinci dönem 26 Mart tarihinde düzenlemiş olduğumuz veli toplantısına katılan bütün velilerimize çok teşekkür etmek isterim. Umarım tüm veli ve öğrencilerimiz 2. dönem içerisinde kullanabilecekleri değerli bilgilere sahip olmuşlardır.

2 ve 3. Dönem içinde bütün öğrencilerimizin kış üniformasını giymesi gerektiğini sizlere bildirmek isterim.

Fen ve Dil Bilimleri binasının Ağustos ayı ortalarında tamamlanacağını sizlere bildirmekten büyük bir memnuniyet duyarım. Çok amaçlı kullanmak üzere yapılacak olan salonumuzun inşaatına çok yakında başlayacağımızı sizlere bildirmek isterim. Bütün inşaat çalışmalarımız planlanan tarihlerden önce başarıyla tamamlanacaktır. İlim Koleji olarak öğrencilerimizin arasında disiplin sağlayabilmemiz için siz değerli velilerimizin yardımına her zaman ihtiyaç duymaktayız ve okul olarak bu konuda sizden gelen her türlü öneriye açık olduğumuzu sizlere bildirmek isterim.
