n my weekday, business, non-motorcyclist persona I am a teacher. More accurately, I’m the Program Chair of Graphic Design for Collins College. I teach and, I think because I complained about things the loudest, they made me the head teacher. It was in this capacity that I went to a social/networking event last week called “Creative Connect“. Creative Connect is a meeting of creative types who are mostly in advertising or design in the Phoenix area. People mingle and share ideas and business cards in hopes of getting business or doing business or getting hired or hiring. I was there in hopes of hiring, as we always need indus- try people to teach part-time. I wasn’t very suc- cessful at my intended goal but it was an interest- ing evening, nevertheless. The guy with the hat The event was held at a small design studio downtown. I met writers and designers, freelancers and people who work at agencies, and old friends. At one point in the evening, I spotted a guy wear- ing a hat I had to inquire about. I have a friend who is always talking about having a fallback position, what he calls “Plan B.” The hat that the guy-wear- ing-the-hat was wearing was emblazoned with the phrase “Plan B.” I had to ask him where he got it so I could purchase one for my friend. ”I have to ask,” I said to him as he walked close to where I was standing, “Where’d you get the hat?” It was not a simple answer. The hat was made for him on some Caribbean island because it was the name of his 42’ catamaran. He then launched passionately into a story about selling all his world- ly goods, buying the boat and spending 2 years sailing the Caribbean, diving, drinking and rubbing elbows with the truly rich until money ran out. The tale ends when he sold the boat and came back to Phoenix to continue his job shooting video. Actually, the tale didn’t end there. He, as excitedly as he had talked about sailing, told me all about his videography studio. The out-of-place guy As I was readying to leave and looking for the host to thank him, I spotted someone I knew. Well, at least recognized. I searched my memory but just couldn’t place him. The reason, it turned-out, was I was searching my memory for people I knew in my weekday-business life not in my weekend-rid- ing life. As I got close enough to read his nametag it clicked - John Covington. Yea, you know the guy – Surgical Steeds, custom bikes, national recognition. “What are you doing in my non-week- end persona?” was what I thought. What I said was, “How’s the custom motorcycle business?” “I’m not really doing that right now,” he replied, “I’m a photographer.” Well that explained why a guy in my motorcy- cle life was showing up in my business life. Students and the parents of students are scared of the huge investment they are about to make in education, especially when it’s not nursing, electrical engineering or becoming a grade school teacher. I remember, when I was young, my parents always said to me “We don’t care what you choose to do for a career as long as it makes you happy.” “And, we think you’ll be happiest if you become a dentist or a chiropractor.” Much to their dismay, I choose a career in art. Like me, a lot of the students enrolled in our programs are choosing a career their parents wouldn’t choose for them. One of the ways I can alleviate their fears is with the circle theory. It works like this – At the top of the circle is this - Given the opportunity to do whatever you want to do, you will do what you like to do. Very few of us in our free time would choose to wash dishes or clean up dog poop or carry big boulders up a steep hill. Most of us would choose to ride or see a movie or surf the internet. If you do whatever you choose to do a lot, you get pretty good at it. And after you get good at it, you like it even more and do it even more. Let’s say, for example, you like playing video games. It’s not all that much fun the first time because you can’t steer or kill anyone because your aim is off and you can’t get past the first level. However, as you do master those things the game is more fun and you play it more. Soon, you’re showing off to your friends and you are recognized as the “expert”. Here’s where the circle part comes in. Once you’re seen as the expert, someone is going to come along and figure out a way to make money from you doing the thing you do. Better yet, they will be willing to pay you to do it. So, it comes full circle and you end up getting paid for doing what you like to do. Some of us are really lucky and this exact thing has happened in our lives. Brett Favre; Bruce Springsteen; those weird father-and-son, TV, chop- per guys (the ones that yell at each other all the time); and everyday people like the hat guy, John Covington and me. We all are paid to do what we really like to do. Does this really relate to Motorcycle rights? Absolutely - albeit in a round-about way. Those of us who volunteer our time to this organization do so is because we like riding. And we want to ride the way we want to ride. We want to ride without having how we ride dictated to us by laws and reg- ulations. And we understand that to do this, we need to make our voices heard. We know that if we want to continue to have the freedom to ride the way we want to ride, we need to fight for the right to do so. And we know that a collective voice is stronger than any one voice alone. So, we join an MRO because we like riding. And we want to ride the way we want to ride. And we understand that to do this, we must make our voices heard. (Are you beginning to see a pattern here?) So, simply, it comes down to this - if you’re not a member of an MRO, then join one and protect that right. And keep doing what you like to do - ride. Gelman Editor, Motorcycle Patriot I

From the ChairmanWe got great reports from many people this

month on the excellent participation at ourMo t o r c y c l eDay at theDome. Wehave manyfolks to thankbut I mustmention Bettyand CJ, BobbiHartman, andour own TomCorr who pro-vided a won-derful meal fore v e r y o n edespite suffer-ing from anasty case ofpneumon i a .What a troop-er!

There was a great turnout of MMA membersfrom all over the state, and what has been report-ed to be one of, if not, the largest number of bikesin front of the Capitol since we have been doingthis event. Kudos to all who came, and especial-ly to those who volunteered in some capacity.Whether it was manning the registration andmembership tables or helping serve meals, thisevent was a success because of you. Specialthanks to Bo who did a fantastic job of makingeveryone feel welcome as well as spending timewith Steve Weir in his office discussing the issuesthat are of the most concern to those of us whowish to ride both free and safely.

The other event held this past month was theBeach Party. This too was very well attended. Italso succeeded in raising funds for our coffers, which could use a little "bailout" money. However, we’re helping ourselves and not lettingBig Brother do it for us, thus saving our kids andgrandkids from paying for the things we need to

protect our rights and those who come after us.Whether it was the band, the good grub (provid-ed by our friends at A.I.M.), the bike contest, tat-too contest, and new for this year (inspired by ourown Chubby) a great Hawaiian shirt contest, everyone had a great time. For those who attend-ed for the first time, we hope the memories madewill keep them coming back for years to come.

I must admit that it saddened me to be unableto attend both of these events, but I had majormedical issues I was dealing with, combinedwith a move from my previous digs to a housethat my lovely lady Meg and I just purchasedtogether. Thanks again to all those true friends ofmine who came and helped, particularly on thelast day of the move, which saw me winding upin the Emergency Room – again.

To end on a very positive note, more andmore folks within our MMA organization are par-ticipating at a much higher level of involvement. Our membership is starting to expand again, andnew Districts are being proposed. I received avery happy phone call from Ron Zimmer fromPage who had just signed up 5 new members, renewed a bunch more, and had about 5-6 peo-ple who all wanted to ride down together to theApril Board meeting. They want to introduce anewly nominated Board prospect as well as get toknow more of the folks from around the state andsee how a Board meeting progressed. With allthis very positive activity, undertaken by manymore people, my confidence in the strength andfuture of the MMA of Arizona grows weekly.

Keep up the great work and bring more ofyour friends and riding partners on board!

Thanks for all of those who do what you do!

If You Ride Be InformedThere are two very important Motorcycle

Rights conventions coming up. They are a greatplace to find a wealth of information pertainingto motorcycle rights, what you can do in protect-ing our rights and learn what other States and/orOrganizations are doing that might be appliedwithin our own community.

The first one is in Reno, Nevada. It is theNational Coalition of Motorcyclists’ (NCOM)24th Annual Convention. The Convention isorganized and funded by Richard Lester and histeam of Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM)Attorneys. What other attorneys do you knowthat put so much back into the MotorcyclistsRights?

The second one is right here in Phoenix, AZ.“Best of the West” is sponsored through theMotorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), Arizona’sonly Federal Motorcycle Rights Organization. This seminar is being hosted by ModifiedMotorcycle Association of AZ. (MMA–AZ),American Bikers Aimed Towards Education(ABATE) and Arizona Confederation ofMotorcycle Clubs (ACMC).

Both of these events will have meetings, sem-inars and group discussions focusing on safetyissues, legal rights, legislative efforts and litiga-tion techniques to benefit our right to ride. Wehave the opportunity to network with like-mind-ed individuals throughout the nation.

Don’t let these opportunities pass you by. Formore information, please contact Tom Corr(MMA –AZ Vice-chairman) at 1-520-252-9675,Bo Molzan (MMA–AZ Interim Co-vice-chairman)at 1-928-399-0238 or CJ Swinford (MMA–AZChairman Emeritus) at 1-602-788-2088.

District ReportsCasa Grande District

What a great success Motorcycle Day at theDome was this year! Some of the legislators rem-inisced back to when it wasn’t nearly as big of anevent, but they did remember the event and thepurpose of MROs. As it becomes larger, we makecontact with even more legislators who partici-pate.

Casa Grande had many people attend thisyear. The event is always a good experience. Many legislators attended the event to havelunch and visit with us, including two from ourDistrict.

This event is one of the most powerful meet-ings we motorcyclists can coordinate and attendto protect our rights in the future. Plans for nextyear’s Motorcycle Day at the Dome have started,so mark your calendars now as a reminder torequest time off in March 2010 so you can par-ticipate.

The location for the District’s motorcycleawareness booth for the month of May is beingdiscussed. We are hoping to be at one of the Cityof Casa Grande parks during the Cinco de Mayocelebration. We would like volunteers to attendand help for an hour. This is the perfect opportu-nity to include the entire family. You can donatean hour to help spread positive information, havefun, and enjoy great food!

Meetings are held on the first Sunday of everymonth at 11:00 a.m. at the Silver Bullet Bar, (520)836-1363, located at 1401 N. Pinal Avenue inCasa Grande. For more information about theCasa Grande District, contact Steve Musgrave at(520) 426-0069 or Tom Corr at (520) 252-9675.

Cochise DistrictThere was a vote at the last district meeting to

hold an MMA of AZ membership drive held inthe Cochise Dist., in Sierra Vista, AZ. The datewill be May17, starting at 11 a.m. at the SierraVista City (Veteran's Memorial) Park, use the FryBlvd. entrance.

State MMA representatives will be on hand tospeak with and explain why your participation isso important to you and the rest of the motorcy-cling community. The situation is growingbeyond each individual State's borders; we arefaced with dealing with more things on a Federallevel than we have in the past.

We plan to offer a hamburger, chips & softdrink (or bottled water) for $4.00 to all whoattend. If an individual joins at the event, they

will receive a ticket, which will allow them to gettheir food & beverage free (paid for by the Dist.)

Anyone with suggestions, please contact meand I’ll hopefully have the answers!

Grand Canyon DistrictGreetings and salutations to all of our MMA

Brothers and Sisters!

The Grand Canyon District held its monthlymeeting at Hog's Restaurant (a business member)on Sunday, March 1, at 9:00 am.

I discussed the issues from the Board ofDirectors Meeting held in January at the PunkinCenter. The members were advised of the issues, including those that need to be addressed withthe State Legislature. District members agreedthat a comprehensive ROW Bill, including felonycriminal sanctions for offenders, must be a prior-ity. Additionally, issues concerning the mobilespeed cameras and cell phone use by cagersneed to be addressed for the safety of motorcy-clists and drivers alike. District members askedthat I bring these issues to the attention of theBoard at the next meeting in April.

I also informed the membership that anNCOM account needs to be established for thedistrict so that members can attend the annualNCOM meetings. 2010 has been set as the firstyear for this district to send members since we'restill getting off the ground.

We had three prospective members attendthe meeting. Jim Klever, Tim Hoffman and CarlSmith were given information about the MMA,including what we are about and what we as adistrict intend to accomplish. Carl Smith notifiedthe district members that he intended to join. Wewish to let all riders know that MMA is a motor-cycle rights organization and that all individuals, riders or not, are welcome to attend our meet-ings. Then, if they like what they see and hear, they are encouraged to join this MRO. Carl notonly decided to join, he also graciously allowedhimself to be nominated and voted in as AssistantDistrict Manager (to be effective after his yearlydues are paid).

The District is excited to announce yet anoth-er business member. Jim Cruz, owner of 2Bar3Historic Restaurant and Saloon, 5877 LeuppRoad in Flagstaff, joined in February. 2Bar3 offersgreat food and has an excellent saloon, staffed byvery cheerful people. Jim is a hard-riding brotherwho cares about ensuring that all have a greattime in his biker-friendly establishment. If you arein the neighborhood, please stop by and supportthis new business member.

Speaking of 2Bar3, Jim allowed the District tohave its first-ever event at his establishment inJune. Brothers and Sisters, please mark your cal-endars for June 19-21 as the Grand CanyonDistrict hosts the Fathers Day Delight. This three-day event, in the cool mountains of Flagstaff, willoffer free on-site dry camping. There will be livemusic both Friday and Saturday nights, with raf-fle prizes and bike games on Saturday.Additionally, the district will host fun ridesthroughout the area so that you can enjoy ridingin the cool pine air. Ladies, you may wish toknow that our female members have a specialactivity scheduled for your amusement.

Vendors are welcome (donations will begladly accepted, but you will not be required topay a fee). We intend to have a great time and wewelcome all riders to attend. A Sunday meal isincluded with paid admission. Cost is $20 perperson all weekend ($15 for MMA members) or$10 per night. For more information, please con-tact Chris Kite (928-853-1211) or Steve Briggs(928-527-3151). We are really looking for otherdistricts to attend this first ever event for our dis-trict and we hope that you will join us. As a spe-cial note: Jim is not charging our district anythingto hold this event. He is doing his part to help ournew district become an even more effectivemember of the MMA family.

Back to the meeting - our district is going toget t-shirts made and start marketing them soon.

Chris Kite will attempt to contact the FlagstaffChapter ABATE coordinator, Scott Gold, to see ifwe can schedule a joint motorcycle awarenessevent to be held in May in Flagstaff. We will keepyou posted as to what occurs.

There are a number of officer changes. LisaGarner, our former Treasurer, resigned asTreasurer to become our Activities Director. JoanCasey-Briggs became the new Treasurer. As pre-viously stated, Carl Smith will become ourAssistant District Manager. <Editor, please notethese officer changes for both the Patriot and theMMA website>

This district doesn't give a damn what thatgroundhog forecasted. The Cabin Fever Crew isalready celebrating the riding season. We wouldlike to thank all who helped to make the BeachParty in New River a truly outstanding event.Although it was cold traveling down I-17 thatmorning (a cool 17 degrees), we had fantastic rid-ing weather the rest of the day and truly enjoyedourselves. The MMA is a proud organization andthat was readily noticeable at the Beach Party.

We are also excited about attending ScrewLaughlin as most of our members are planning togo. We look forward to visiting with you all atJake's Corner.

Camp Lunatic Members Appreciation PartyApril 4-5: Our new Activities Officer has put thisparty together for our members just for the fun ofit and everything will be free. There is evena trampoline (that should be interesting) to jumpon.

MMA State Rally May 22 -24: I’m really look-ing forward to this year’s State Rally (please don’tsnow this year). This event is always a good timeand a great ride to get to. The cost is only $15dollars for a single and $25 for a couple.

Verde Valley DistrictFellow Freedom Fighters,

Spring is upon us. The riding weather is greatto say the least, especially when it comes to cen-tral and northern Arizona. The snow is gone andthe average temps during the day are around 70-80 degrees. As you ride through the canyons ofnorthern AZ, you will see that they are comingalive again. This means it’s time to get out andenjoy these days.

It is also time to make sure we’re working toeducate and inform the public about motorcycleawareness and motorcycle rights. This is verysimple to do. If you are not comfortable talking topeople directly then you can easily carry some ofthe Governor’s office on highway safety motorcy-cle awareness councils literature with you tohand out or leave at places that you stop.Additionally, you can also find great informationon the MMA-AZ website that you can print upand pass out or again just leave a few thingseverywhere that you stop.

The more that we are all out there getting themessage out, the more effective we will be inaccomplishing our goals of motorcycle rights, safety and education. Be as involved and proac-tive as you possibly can. If anyone is interested inbecoming more involved feel free to contact meby phone, email or in person, I would be happyto help you with ideas and plans of action.

It was a great day down at the capitol forMotorcycle Day at the Dome. What a wonderfulturn out; thanks to all those that road in from outof town. Always remember that the town limitssign doesn't say "NO MOTORCYCLES BEYONDTHIS POINT." Get out and support events andgatherings as much as you can, especially oneslike the day at the dome.

I had the pleasure of meeting with District 1’sSenator Steve Pierce and Representative AndyTobin in their offices. They were very sincere intheir pledge of support for motorcycle rights andthe MMA-AZ in general. They gave me theirdirect contact information to avoid all the redtape in case we should ever need to get theirattention on something headed toward or movingthrough the Arizona legislature that would affectmotorcyclists. Additionally they both stated thatthey would contact me if there is anything theyget wind of that would affect AZ riders. I feel theday was a total win-win for both our legislatorsand us. Tom - great food man! You are the smok-er master!

The Verde Valley District has had a fewchanges recently, as you may know. As I havebeen working more and more at the state level, assisting Tom and Colin with the day-to-dayoperations of the MMA-AZ, it has taken timeaway from my working on Verde Valley Districtoperations. Have no fear; the district has been invery capable hands during this time.

Eric Seitz, our district Quarter Master, hasbeen appointed Interim District Manager duringmy time of transition and let me be the first to saythat Eric has been doing one hell of a fine job. Hehas organized and drafted the long awaitedMMA-AZ Verde Valley District working papersand district by-laws. They have since beenreviewed, approved by the District office andGeneral membership of the District, and for-warded to state for the official record. Great JobEric! We are looking forward to the future as wellas the State and our district working more close-ly together.

It has been great to see how the Verde ValleyDistrict has rebuilt over the last year. We’ve hada huge burst in membership with a large numberof old members coming back around and gettinginvolved. The unity and teamwork of the Districtleadership and officers has been phenomenal. Ithas truly been a pleasure to be part of this team.

Keep it up and rolling forward with the fullthrottle attitude, and we will move mountains inthe future to come.

Don't forget that the MMA-AZ 2nd quarterboard meeting will be held in the Verde ValleyDistrict, Saturday, April 11, 2009. It starts at noonat Flinn's in Rim Rock. Hope to see you all there.Come on out and see what your district reps andstate officers are doing for you.

Vigilance is a word you will often hear in theMRO world, and I suspect when most hear some-one talking about being “vigilant” and stayinginformed they immediately think about the statelegislature.

In all reality the cause extends way beyondthe state level and to be effective, you as a mem-ber of an MRO, need to monitor not only what isgoing on in your state but in other states too, andmore importantly you also have to watch what isgoing on in Washington D.C.

Gideon John Tucker was an American lawyer,a politician and a one- time (Arizona) newspapereditor. Tucker is credited for saying in 1866: "Noman's life, liberty or property are safe while theLegislature is in session." How true and pro-found, that statement is. It is those truths in partthat may have helped our MRO forefathers estab-lish organizations such as NCOM, and the MRF.

The National Coalition of Motorcyclists(NCOM) and The Motorcycle Riders Foundationwere both ideas whose times were long overdue. In the mid-eighties just a few months apart theybecame realities. The very first conferences, onein St Louis the other in Las Vegas found leaders ofvarious motorcycle groups from across Americameeting to discuss "coming together" on a regularbasis and the need for a voice on a national levelto protect our life-style and right to ride.

Seminars put on today by NCOM and theMRF are specifically designed to educate andmotivate members of the motorcyclists' rightscommunity. They are fantastic learning opportu-nities and offer a great chance to meet other peo-

ple who are just as passionate about motorcy-clists' rights as you are.

These gatherings afford U.S. motorcycle asso-ciations as well as motorcycle associations fromEurope, North America, Australia and NewZealand, a way of networking information andexpertise. It also affords opportunities for themutual exchange of information and legislativestrategy, and the combined strength to fight allthat is adverse to our freedoms of the road.

The bottom is everyone benefits.

If you care at all about your rights as rider youneed take a proactive stand and make plans toattend one or both of these conferences this year.

NCOM is holding its 24th AnnualConvention at the Nugget Casino and Resort inReno, Nevada on May 7 - 10. Reno is about 790miles away and takes about 13 hours to get there. If you ride it will cost you about $50 in fuel anda room will run you about $75 a night.

The BEST of the West 2009 conference iscloser to home in Phoenix on June 12-14 at theCrowne Plaza by the Phoenix Airport. A roomthere will run you about $90 a night and includesbreakfast.

There is really no reason for anyone in theMMA to miss the BEST of the West 2009.

The admission to these conferences are paidfor by the MMA, all we ask is that if you attendyou take good notes and bring the informationback and you share it with your district.

Take advantage of these conferences getinvolved "Ask not what the MMA can do for you,but what you can do for the MMA"

great for riding. We had over 682 people sign in,and as usual, it looked like everyone was havinga great time. Fools Life started playing at noon. They were great, of course, and kept the crowdgoing. I don’t know about you but this year is goingby way too fast. It’s April and before long we’ll becomplaining that it’s to hot. A lot of motorcycleevents going on around the state with a lot moreto come the rest of this year. Speaking of events -if you missed the “Motorcycle Day at the Dome”,you missed a great day. The Motorcycle RightsOrganizations- Modified Motorcycle Association(MMA), American Brotherhood Aimed TowardsEducation, hosted the event (ABATE), ArizonaConfederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC).What a turnout of bikes and legislators. We hadapproximately 150 bikes, close to 200 riders and32 legislators in attendance.

Motorcycle Day at the Dome was establishedto allow MRO members to spend time with thevarious legislators, talk about issues, and askthem for their support on bills that theMotorcycle Lobbyists have introduced. We alsowant to show them that we are not only on thesame page, but that we are actively taking a partin the legislative process and want and need theirsupport on our issues. It gives us a chance to per-sonalize ourselves and let them know that notonly do we take part in putting them in office, butthat as their constituents we hold them account-able.

I want to say a BIG thank you to all thathelped put this together and attended. We aremaking a difference and with your help, we cancontinue to do so. We received a lot of very pos-itive comments from our Legislative folks onwhat we’re doing and how we’re involved. Wecontinue to learn from each year and expand. We’ve already had a meeting to go over whatwent well and what things we can do to make itbetter for next year. It’s going to be a great trainride. So, let’s keep it moving.

I want to say again that the Lobbyist Team isreally committed to making a difference. Wecouldn’t do the things that we do or make

changes if it wasn’t for the Lobbyist Team work-ing together and supporting each other. We workhard at setting up relationships, and thereforebuilding the rapport and credibility necessary todo what we set out to do each year. We workclosely with Committee members to give themeverything they need to understand the purposeof our legislation, how important it is to allmotorcyclists in Arizona, and answer any ques-tions they may have without hesitation.

We need your help. Why? Because evenmore powerful than the voice of your lobbyistamongst the state legislators, is the voice of theirconstituents. You!

We need additional volunteers to participatein what we originally referred to as LegislativeSpecialist s– now called “The DefendersProgram”. Clubs and organizations throughoutthe country are getting behind their lobby teamsto support their states through this top-notch pro-gram.

Your club/charter or organizationdistrict/chapter can help by providing at leastone, if not more, member(s) to become aDefender. We will need that person’s Name,Phone, Zip code, Address, District, Org/Club,and Email. Send this information to [email protected]. Between the MMA, ABATE andACMC, we will pull all the defender’s together ona master list.

When your lobbyists need things done orhave a Call to Action, we will give you explicitinstructions and all the information necessary todo what we are asking of you. Many times, thiswill entail contacting your legislators. If you’renot sure who that is, your Legislative Districtnumber is on your voter registration card, or youcan go to www.votesmart.org, enter your zipcode on the top left and look under StateLegislative to find your District number and the

names of your State Senator and two StateRepresentatives.

Please – we can’t do this alone! Your voicespoken to the legislators that you put in office isa very powerful tool.

Currently, the two (2) bills that we’re involvedin and supporting are SB1060 and HB2133. Wecontinue to watch SB1137 but our main concernwith this one right now is to make sure that every-one has a Motorcycle Endorsement on theirlicense. That is critical to this bill.

Update on Emissions bill from last year:ADEQ will call us when they are ready for astakeholder meeting. Once they notify us, thePublic Hearing will be scheduled for MaricopaCounty. There is only going to be one hearing. After the hearing, they will only need a short timeto finalize the SIP and then get it sent to the EPA.Since our bill became final in Sept '08, this willlikely be done in less than a year. Unfortunately, the EPA can take up to another 12-18 months tofinalize it. Even so, with any luck, we should be“Emission Free” sometime in 2010, by the end atlatest.

I want to thank everyone for your support, emails and many comments. It’s not easy to getsome of these bills through as you all know, butthrough the involvement of our Lobbyist,Defender Program and concerned folks, it getsdone. This year and probably next year are goingto be difficult on some bills due to the economy. We’re already seeing this year that a lot of timewith our Legislative folks is spent on 2009 and2010 budget. Your continued support will helpmake sure that our issues aren’t forgotten.

I know this is overdue, but I wanted to take aminute to give a great BIG thank you to those ofyou that helped to make the 2009 MotorcycleDay At The Dome, the best one ever. I wouldguess that we had over 150 bikes and 200 ridersattending, as well as 32 state legislators present.

I can't even begin to tell all of you the gra-cious comments that we received from those leg-islators in attendance. Every time I lookedaround, I observed some of our members sittingand talking to them. Legislator after legislatorcommented on the fact that they had "personal-ly"' been contacted by our members and invitedto the luncheon. Everyone truly appreciated the'cheat sheets' describing our current legislationand its status, and they made a direct impact onthe legislators, who were sure to take one withthem.

The purpose of this event is to have our mem-bers spend time with the various legislators, talk-ing about our issues, and asking them for theirsupport on the bills that the motorcycle lobbyistshave introduced and are running. It also showsthem that we are not only all on the same page, but that we are actively taking a part in the leg-islative process and want and need their supporton our issues. It gives us a chance to personalizeourselves and let them know that not only do wetake a part in putting them in office, but that astheir constituents we hold them accountable.

The legislators LOVE this day as well. One ofthe Senators recently told me that when the

Motorcycle Day at the Domemotorcycle lobby first started coming to the cap-ital steady, which was about 1999, they, the StateLegislators, didn't take us very seriously. Theyknew nothing about us. They didn't have a clueas to what our issues could even be, and that itwasn't until we starting coming year after yearand passing bill after bill that they started to takereal notice. He agreed that they could no longerafford to ignore us, let alone not take us serious-ly.

I believe that had a whole lot to do with thefact that your lobby team, made up of lobbyistsfrom ABATE, MMA and ACMC are continuallyhard at work setting up relationships, thereforebuilding the rapport and credibility necessary todo what we set out to do each year. This one dayon the Senate lawn brings that all together for us.It shows the legislators that not only do themotorcycle rights organizations have a superblobby team, but that they have members, who aretheir constituents, that support their lobby andare all on the same page as well.

A BIG thank you to all who helped make thishappen! All the volunteers that helped with Sign-In, the Organizational Tables, the Food Line, andon and on. And, a BIG, BIG thanks to the ALMAfor their ongoing efforts in directing traffic andassuring that all motorcyclists in attendance aresafely parked.
