Getting to Know

Wayne Cordeiro is the Senior Pastor of New Hope Christian

Fellowship O‘ahu. One of the fastest growing churches in the

United States with weekly attendance of over 10,000 and satellite

churches in many communities on O‘ahu. His teachings are also

broadcast on television, radio and the internet.

Wayne has pioneered and mentored hundreds of churches in

Hawaii, the continental US, the Pacific Rim and around the world.

With a heart to train up and release young leaders that will impact

their generations for the Lord, he started Pacific Rim Bible College

in 1998.

Pastor Cordeiro is a prolific writer of both books and songs. His

most recent books include Leading on Empty, The Encore

Church, and The Divine Mentor.

As a world-class communicator, his ability to bring biblical clarity

and humor to the tough issues of life, has made him a much sought

after speaker. He regularly teaches on leadership, God’s design for

better living, and how to succeed in life. Wayne’s gift of leadership

is often focused on helping the Church, and its leaders, build godly

character and learn how to shepherd with integrity and vision. He

regularly speaks to leaders across denominational boundaries, as

well as in business.

Wayne and his wife Anna recently celebrated their 35th Anniversary

with their three children Amy, Aaron, and Abby. One of his greatest

joys is spending time with their children and two grandchildren.

Raised in Palolo Valley, Japan, and Oregon, Wayne is a local boy

at heart. When he has time, he loves to be outdoors paddling and

riding his motorcycle.

NewBeginningsIn the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

(Genesis 1:1-3)

The Bible says in the beginning of creation it “was formless and void, and darkness.” There will be seasons in our lives when we’re going to have that same situation, where it’s just chaos, discouragement and endless dark.

We were in Hilo for ten years and I fell in love with the people. All of a sudden something began to stir in me and I felt like I didn’t belong. What God was doing was uprooting me to plant me somewhere else. But I didn’t want to go. It was a time in my life where it just got very discouraging and depressing. I tried to figure out what was going on, but nothing was really going wrong. I felt like I was dying on the inside. I went home and worked in the garden. I didn’t know what was going on in my chaos, or how to get out of it. I had never felt so far away from God. So I cried out to Him.

Even though it seems like chaos, and everything is going down the tubes, even though it is dark and time is meaningless, entwined in the chaos the Spirit of God is moving just above the waters waiting for just one word from God, “Let there be light.” Bang! What great

news that was when I thought God had abandoned me!

All of us will go through seasons of birth pangs. You will go through them several times in your life. You will feel like everything is collapsing in on you. You’ll feel formless and void. But the most precious good news of all is that when I finally saw what God had planned for me, my faith doubled.

God is with you. He is always present, even when you can only “see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you.” (Deuteronomy 20:1) In other words, when the circumstances are overriding you and all you see are the negatives and the things coming against you, God says, “Don’t worry, I’m there.” The full power of God, the full ability of God, all of the strength of heaven is hovering just above the chaos of the waters.

God wants us to understand the power of prayer. Often when I encounter seasons of darkness, I bail out; relationships don’t go well, I bail out. The Lord is not looking for people who bail out. He’s looking for men and women who will stand in the gap because then His light is reflected and dispels darkness. We partner with Him in dispelling darkness. Prayer is when I call out to God and stand in the gap.

Often, we just pray once, and if He doesn’t answer, we bail out. Do you know what God is saying?

When God sees that my heart is committed, He adds His voice, “Let there be light,” and the Spirit of God immediately moves into action. Then what looked like a dead

end turns into a new beginning.

It’s like that in life. What are you going to focus on? If you bail out when you have birth pangs, then it becomes a dead end. But God is saying, “I can turn birth pangs into birthdays. I can turn an ending into a beginning.” Even if you thought it was an ending, if you cry out to Him and stand in the gap, you will understand the Spirit of God is hovering just above the waters even though you can’t see Him.

Don’t bail out on Him. He’s ready. Just one word from you and the Spirit of God will begin to move. If you understand the ways of God, you’ll do it together with Him. He will turn dead ends into new beginnings.

We are called to build up and encourage one another, yet so

often we slander, and judge others. The greatest cure for this

destructive way of life is to take a brutally honest look at areas

of our own lives that need mending. Then we will extend com-

passion, instead of critical judgment.

Grumbling and complaining, have been a problem since the

beginning of time. So many times during our walk we are

asked to persevere because it builds character, and if we stay

the course without complaining, the blessings that follow a sea-

son of trials are enormous.

We can all talk the Christian talk and maintain the image, but

do we really live up to our claims? One of the aspects of a true

faith is being able to “bridle our tongues.” Learning when to

be quiet and when to speak is an art!

When people listen to you can they truly rely on your word,

or do they have immediate doubts? God is asking us to let our

yes be yes, and our no be no. Our lives should be truthful and

reliable, in action and deed, from the core of our being.

What are the words that get us into trouble? Ultimatums, im-

petuous commitments, and more. How do we learn to deal

with what we have said? When should premature commit-

ments be kept and should they ever be broken?

Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. So

often when we speak out of anger we hurt ourselves and oth-

ers. We will look at the ways God gives us to put away anger so

that our mouth will be a blessing to God, ourselves and others.

The tongue is a small part of the body, but if we don’t bridle it we find

ourselves in deep trouble. God has asked us to keep a tight rein on our tongue,

otherwise it will be like a wild mustang, wreaking havoc and out of control.

And the walls came tumbling down …As I parked my car on a side street in Kalihi, I could

already hear the “pow, pow” of the hammers attacking

the crumbling tile wall. “Wow,” I thought, “the Aikea

Ministry is already at work. I’d best hurry.” Sure

enough, as I walked up the driveway into the backyard

of Loraine Cross’ home, the men had already torn

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way

you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

(Galatians 6:2 NIV)


down two sections of wall. I could see how the

wall was leaning and I mean leaning towards the

neighbor’s yard. No wonder Loraine was concerned

about the elderly neighbor whose home was on the

other side of the wall.

The men glanced up as I wandered into the yard—

gave me a smile, a wave, a “high 5” and continued

on hammering, drilling, and removing loose concrete

tiles.

Loraine is a single mom who lives here with her son,

Paul age 12. As I briefly chatted with her I learned

that she had grown up in this house and I guessed

the house was about 70 years old. Her mother had

recently passed away and she was trying to do some

much needed repairs. Not easy for a single mom! She

was totally astounded that this hazardous wall was

not only going to be broken down but that a new wall

would be built in its place.

It might have been a misty morning but the light

of Christ shown through each and every one of

the men working on the wall. They joked amongst

themselves, conferred as to the best plan of action,

and fellowshipped all the while working at a pace that

made me catch my breath. The wall was down by

10:30am, the area neatly swept and ready for the next

step—rebuilding. This will be done at a later date.

As a follow-up, I talked briefly with Glenn Ogasawara,

the ministry leader. I asked him exactly what called

these men to do what they do. Glenn quoted this

Bible verse:

The Aikea Ministry—men called by God to help

widows and single moms. They do a service that

saying “thank you” just isn’t enough. But … thank

you for your joyful and humble service.

Oh … I wondered exactly what Aikea meant. Well

… just pronounce the word quickly using your best

pidgin…I care!

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at

the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have

opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of

believers.” (Gal. 6:9-10 NIV)

Samuel the son of Hannah and Elkanah. Samuel’s birth was an answer to Hannah’s prayer for a child and she dedicated him to the Lord at birth. Samuel was brought to Eli the priest to raise, and grew up to be priest and prophet for Israel. He anointed and guided Saul as the first king, and then David as his successor.

Eli a priest of Israel who allowed his sons to do evil before God. He, his sons, and his family line bore the curse of their sins and died.

Saul the first king of Israel. Saul eventually disobeyed the Lord, and his place was given to David. He hunted David for years, and died with his sons in battle.

David the second, and greatest king of Israel. David was anointed king by Samuel at a young age while he was just a forgotten shepherd boy. He killed Goliath and gained the love of the people by his charisma, military skills, and relationship with God.King David excelled in leadership, strategy, and music. He was called a man after God’s own heart.David fell into adultery and murder. His son Absalom tried to usurp him as king.

Lessons to Live By

She fell at his feet and said, “On me alone, my lord, be the blame … Now therefore, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, since the Lord has restrained you from shedding blood, and from avenging yourself by

your own hand, now then let your enemies and those who seek evil against my lord, be as Nabal. Now let this gift which your maidservant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who accompany my lord. Please

This whole portion of scripture, featuring Abigail’s wisdom, is a poignant leadership lesson in problem solving. She models practical steps when solving gnarly problems. Four Leadership Lesson to Live By:

David’s answer? “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me, and blessed be your discernment,

and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodshed and from avenging myself by my own hand.”

1 Sam. 25:32-33 Dear Lord, thank you so much for this great lesson in problem solving. It guides me as a leader when I encounter difficult situations. Give me the humility of Abigail, together with the discernment and wisdom she possessed, as I serve You.

1. Diffuse AngerThe presence of anger will always skew every situation making it an uphill battle. The first order of business is to diffuse anger; otherwise it’s like trying to counsel someone who just slammed the car door on his finger. While his finger is still stuck, you want him to listen to your wisdom about enacting safety measures.

Abigail did that by vicariously putting the blame on an innocent party. The anger, which turned a young king into an out-of-control executioner, is pacified and now negotiations can be profitable.

This can also be done through genuine apology and sincere repentance. A choice to be merciful is always a more noble power than retaliation.

2. Give Thanks in Advance Abigail thanks David in advance for his good heart and ties that into what pleases God. She paints a picture of a preferable future. In faith, she thanks him and compliments him.

3. Honor Rather Than Compete She gives him what He wants in a way that doesn’t damage anyone else. Abigail gives David gifts and honors him rather than competing or getting defensive with him.

4. Ask for Forgiveness“Please forgive the transgression of your maidservant; for the Lord will certainly make for my lord an enduring house” (v. 28).

My wife had been in labor for 28 hours. Her energy was waning. Her contractions were not progressing as quickly as we’d hoped.We both wanted a natural birth. She didn’t want medication, and she wanted to stick to the birth plan that we had written out. The doctors wanted to pop her water bag and give her an epidural—neither being on our birth plan.

“If we are faithless, He remains

I now had to reconsider what was best for my wife and baby. The two of us went into the bathroom together, alone, and I told her we should pop the water bag. It would take one hour for the epidural to be prepared, and if she still wanted a natural birth we had one hour to deliver the baby; but popping the water bag meant her contractions would speed up and drastically increase the pain. She agreed to try.

We prayed.

We felt God had wanted us to have the baby naturally. We prayed hard, and knew that God would walk us through it.

With the drastic increase in pain and the rapid depletion of energy, everything spiraled downward. Laine lost hope, and watching her go through it, I too lost hope. It didn’t feel like God would come through, even though we were so sure of it before.

Just as the epidural was ready, they did one final check; she was fully dilated!She didn’t want the epidural and immediately sat on the birthing stool. In less than an hour of pushing, our first son was born—just as we had prayed.

We had gone from fully trusting God, to completely losing hope. But in the end, God came through.

They say having a child changes your life. It’s true. In my case it confirms, on a deeper level, how God is always faithful—even when we lose faith.

Did you know that Vitamin-D is produced by a reaction on your skin with the sun? Vitamin-D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestines as well as reabsorbing calcium in the kidneys. Calcium is an important mineral that is needed to build strong bones. When the body lacks calcium, it begins to rob your bones of this mineral. This can lead to a condition called osteoporosis which is simply a lot of “holes” in your bones that lead to weak bones and fractures. Another condition called Rickets is a bone softening condition found in children due to lack of vitamin-D and calcium and malnutrition. Since vitamin-D is produced by a reaction on your skin with the sun, researchers claim that 5-30 minutes of sun exposure between 10a.m. and 3p.m. twice a week without sunscreen generally produces enough vitamin-D. However, sunscreens above protecting factor 8 generally block this reaction. This is not suggesting sunscreen should not be used; sunscreen protects the skin from the damaging properties of the sun like skin cancer. For those who live in areas where the sun is weak or are not able to enjoy the sun, vitamin-D can be obtained from foods or supplements.

Way Dear Aaron,

This morning you made a picture in Sunday School for me. You color very interestingly and your imagination is great! However, I loved your gift not because of your impeccable “artwork,” but because you are my child. It was my relationship with you that brought worth to the artwork. It was precious because it came from my son.

Although the Lord gives us many opportunities to serve Him, our performance does not determine our position with Him. Rather, our position gives worth to our performance. God doesn’t applaud us on the basis of our results or relationship! We are His kids!

You also did a somersault for me last night. To be honest, it wasn’t the best one I’ve ever seen. You almost broke your neck! And even though you hit the wall (you ran out of space because you didn’t start in the middle of the room), you still stood proudly when I clapped for you. You enjoyed the applause because you did your best and felt my love and approval.

Some days you will feel as if there’s nothing you can do correctly. During those times, please don’t compare your performance to others or feel that you have to succeed to gain love and acceptance. I love you because you are my son, and I am honored because Jesus let me be your dad. Rest in that, and when you do, you’ll notice things getting better and better.

Look for God’s applause and not the world’s. Soon, you’ll be producing masterpieces. You’ll do spectacular somersaults! But always remember what brings value to all we do for God. The value is not in what we produce. What we produce is made valuable by our relationship with Him!

In 1994, just a week after receiving four of the Christian music industry’s coveted Dove Awards, Michael English’s double life came crashing down around him, as he confessed to an extramarital affair. After separating from the wife, he embraced the Nashville party scene, eventually becoming dangerously addicted to prescription painkillers. Over the next several years, that highly publicized fall from grace went from bad to worse, with a series of regretful decisions leaving Michael spiritually, physically, emotionally and financially bankrupt. By 2000 he was “a grungy unwashed hermit” who sold his performance clothes and other collectors’ items on eBay to finance his drug habit. Despite spiraling further than anyone could ever imagine, Michael had a life changing encounter with God and his life was dramatically renewed. A voice told him that he “could keep heading down the road of addiction and be dead at forty” or he could turn his life over to God. “When the lowest thing that could possibly happen happens; don’t give up, because you might be missing a blessing down the road,” says English. Not only has English been completely delivered from all substances, but also experienced a second chance at starting a family, which he credits as the ultimate miracle. In 2002 Michael married Marcie, a pastor’s daughter and a few years later the couple welcomed a daughter, Issabella Grace (Bella), into the world. An avid gardener, Michael is a veritable encyclopedia regarding species of plants, where they will best thrive an d how to best care for them.

ww Having been in the financial services industry for nearly six years, I don’t get asked this question nearly enough, “What should I do with my tax return?” I actually love being asked this question, because most people who receive a “windfall” from the Internal Revenue Service spend it faster than they can say IRS! My experience has been that the majority of folks use their tax refund to pay off credit card debt amassed during the previous year. Then, with

a zero balance on their credit card, they feel “free” to start charging again, forcing themselves to repeat the process next year. the family strong and tight knit …

1. SPEND QUALITY TIME TOGETHER! Because of our various schedules, we don’t have a lot of time to spend together. However, we realize quality not quantity is most important for our family. We enjoy simple things like car rides and meals together.

2. LAUGH…A LOT! We laugh a lot in our family, even if it’s not funny! Everyone (Lisa, Isabella, Olin, and I) has our own personal, quirky style that keeps us laughing all the time.

3. MANAGE EXPECTATIONS! I didn’t marry an expectation of a wife, I married Lisa. That helps me not to expect her to fulfill me. It also helps me not to expect my kids to be perfect. If we don’t manage our expectations, we’ll be disappointed.

4. COMMUNICATION! We communicate great, when I can remember what I need to tell her.

5. DISCIPLINE!God disciplines Lisa and I when we need to be disciplined—which is often. He disciples us because He loves us. The same goes for our kids. We discipline them because we love them.

Currently, I am on tour with Natalie Grant for her Spring “Make It Matter” Tour which feature artists Chris Slign (from American Idol), Meredith Andrews, and introducing Evan Milby! I am singing with Natalie as well as leading worship for the show! It’s been a blast to travel with this group while being in between seasons with Revolve (which just ended in February).

I’m still amazed that God has kept me working this long! It’s been a year and a half already of non-stop touring! That’s amazing in this day and age…and only reminds me of His Promise to us in Revelations 3:7…What

He opens, no one can close; and what He closes, no one can open! With that, I pray that He is opening LIFE-CHANGING doors for you in ways that only He can!

Roll-Out Sugar Cookies on a Stick1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened 1 cup sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons baking powder (sifted into flour) 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour Pre-heat oven to 350º F. In a large bowl beat butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add the flour-baking powder mixture gradually, until all ingredients are well blended.

Divide dough into 2 large balls and 1 small ball. On a floured surface (Or preferable parchment paper which is affixed to a smooth flat surface), roll out the small ball until it is about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out 25± round discs (or square shapes cut with a butter knife) about size of a half-dollar. Set this aside.

Affix another sheet of parchment paper, and dust with flour. Roll out the larger balls into slabs about 1/4 inch thick. Using the cookie cutter, cut out the shapes, making sure you dip them in flour before each use.

Place a half-dollar disc a few inches from the edges on one side of a cookie sheet. Lay one end of a cookie stick in the middle of the dough and place the cut-out cookie over it. (All sticks face the middle of the cookie sheet; nothing protrudes.) Gently press the top of the cookie so that the half-dollar dough and the cookie adhere to each other. Place the next half-dollar disc on the opposite side of the cookie sheet. Continue until the cookie sheet is full. Bake for 15 min. or until golden brown. Let cookies sit for about 10 minutes before removing them from the cookie sheet. Cool completely, then decorate with Royal Icing. Wrap with plastic bags and twist ties when decorations are dry.

Beat all ingredients at med., then high speeds for 7 to 12 minutes until icing forms in peaks. Divide into small batches and color with food coloring as desired. Keep icing covered with a damp paper towel to keep it from drying out. Add a few more drops of water if icing does not flow easily. You can fill a small Ziploc bag and cut a very tiny hole in the corner to squeeze the icing through. Or you may use the decorating tips, couplers and bags that bakers use to decorate cookies.

•2 blocks of softened butter•4 tablespoons powdered sugar•1/2 cup walnuts or macadamia nuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 325º Combine ingredients together. Press into a 9 X 34 inch pan. Chill for 1/2 hour. Bake until golden brown--approx. 25 minutes. Cool completely before adding filling.

Beat sugar and cream cheese together. Fold in whipped cream and vanilla. Pour on cooled crust, chill until ready to serve. Serve topped with chilled blueberry pie filling.

Ala Moana Beach Park

Homeless FeedingOn any given Tuesday if you stroll past the Diamond Head concession at Ala Moana Park, Glenn Yasue and his team from New Hope are ministering to the street homeless. “We’ve been here at Ala Moana for the past three years and it has been such a blessing,” said Glenn, who conducts a church service and feeds about 60 homeless each week. Glenn shops at the FoodBank for the raw ingredients and the students at the Farrington High School Culinary Program prepare the food for the outreach.

“It’s something God asked me to do back in 1999 when Pastor Wayne Cordeiro challenged us to go on a mission. I had my own business and was involved in so many things, but then I heard God tell me that my mission field was the homeless of Hawaii and He wanted me involved in this. I started in Makaha doing outreaches and it all came together.” In all outreaches, there is a mini program that includes singing, prayer, a Gospel message, and then a gifting is given. Through gift donations, the first week clothing is given, the second week is a snack they take with them, the third week

AA batteries are exchanged so they can powerup small items, and toiletries are distributed on the fourth week. “It is my heart’s desire to share the gospel with these people, and also encourage them and give them hope” says Glenn. The first thing I think of when I think of Easter is… chocolate, and Jesus! Hmmm, what else…Oh, I also think about eggs, and bunnies and being with my family, and going to church.

In the Bible I read about Jesus, dying on the cross, and getting stabbed in the side. I don’t like to think about that.

Jesus’ friends went to the tomb and he was gone. He had powers from God to come back to life. At Easter we celebrate how Jesus died to save us, and I like to celebrate Easter with my basket full of chocolate!W
