Competency Three

The student will express, communicate, evaluate, or exchange ideas effectively.


Important Considerations

• In the new framework, the composing process is addressed instead of the writing process. Why was this change made? Reminds teachers to use varied forms

of communication Allows students another entry point into

the curriculum

Competency Three – Objective A

K - The student will use an appropriate composing process (e.g., planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing/sharing). (DOK 3)

[*Writing for kindergarten students is defined as making marks and/or symbols on a page that possess meaning for the author.]


Competency Three – Objective A

1st to 3rd Grades – The student will use an appropriate composing process (e.g., planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing/sharing) to compose or edit. (DOK 3)

[Note: Editing will be tested under competency four.]


The student will use an appropriate composing process (e.g., planning, drafting, revising, editing, publishing/sharing) to compose or edit.

1) Planning – Use graphic organizers to generate and organize ideas.

2) Drafting – Put thoughts on paper using words and sentences.

3) Revising – Revise compositions by clarifying and adding details.

4) Editing – Edit for capitalization and punctuation.

5) Publishing/ Sharing – Share compositions by displaying, retelling, and/or reading ideas.

Marsha is writing a report on burrowing parrots. Read her entire outline of the report.

Burrowing Parrots

1. Compose drawings/visual images and orally describe compositions.

2. Compose oral descriptions of a familiar person, place, or thing.

It was the biggest toy plane I had ever seen, even bigger than my little sister’s tricycle. I want to fly that plane when I become a pilot one day.
