Down Memory LaneB Y S A R A D O W N S

Are there any of my contemporaries out there who remember the old – I mean old – radio days of the 30’s and 40’s.? The other day, apparently when my aches and pains had tried to resurface, I recalled a particular character of those days. Who remembers The Duke of Paducah? He was what we might refer to these days as a “stand-up comic”. He played a backwoods hillbilly type character, telling jokes of that genre and banjo playing. He was on programs on WLS in Chicago and the ever popular Grand Ole Opry to name a couple. His signa-ture “sign off” was always, “I’m goin’ back to the wagon boys; these shoes are killin’ me”. The Duke of Paducah’s real name was Benjamin Francis Ford. He died in June of 1986 at age 85 having been elected to the Country Hall of Fame just about four months before his death. His shoes were no longer killin’ him. That signature phrase of the Duke’s brought back a memory of my Dad who would say, referring to shoes, something like, “I wear a seven but a seven and a half feels so good I buy an eight”. Yes, he had small feet for a man. Another was, “I always wear my new shoes to a funeral. I am feeling bad anyway and don’t notice how much they hurt”. Another “hillbilly” character of the era was Bob Burns who was known as The Arkansas Traveler. He, too, did the stand-up comedy. Country/hillbilly was very popular during those decades. He also had a musical in-strument – well you could loosely call it that. He called it a Bazooka, apparently a made up name. It was fashioned primarily with stove pipe (remember stove pipes?) and a funnel. He attempted to get a few “tunes” out of it but my recollection is its sounding somewhat like a cow or bull mooing/lowing in distress. However, I am sure he

Listenin' to the radio...became wealthy from it. I found out something I don’t think I knew before – He was married to Judy Canova for a few years. I remember her. She, too, while being a talented actress/singer, found her most prominent fame being a “hayseed” type. These three people did appear in various mov-ies along with their radio work and may have even had a stint on early television but I remember them most of all from their radio days. When I finally did see either a movie or TV I wasn’t disappointed as they were “dooded up” to pretty well match my former imaginations. Some of you folk may relate the word BA-ZOOKA to a military weapon created during WWII as an anti-tank weapon. It was awkward, cumbersome and heavy for a soldier to carry but reasonably effective at short range. It wasn’t a weapon used for long and now who thinks of land warfare with tanks and such? The bazooka weapon was named for The Arkansas Traveler – Bob Burns’ bazooka. The “Retro” TV stations have revived a lot of old old TV programs. Wouldn’t it be fun if radio sta-tions could do the same with those old radio shows? The thing is, if there were recordings they were more crude and of poor quality and probably weren’t well (if at all) preserved. I seem to remember some years back there being cassettes available of some of the old radio shows. I wonder why I never had any? May have been at the time in my life when my money well was a bit shallow. Let’s hope that some of those tapes of radio personali-ties (like Benny, Burns & Allen, Fred Allen, Bob Hope. Red Skelton, “mean wittle kid”, etc. early TV) are still around and we may get to hear them again or for the first time.

“Are We Truly Sorry?”

When we do something we know is wrong, we say we are sorry – but are we truly sorry in our hearts? It is so easy to talk of being sorry when we are not. We think of this as a minor sin. We also talk to God about sacrifice ( giving up something we love), when we have no intention of sacrificing. I guess maybe we think God won’t notice. Then, to make matters worse, we talk to God about doing things for His kingdom, when we al-ready are too busy with other things, and tell ourselves that we will try to do something for God, but we aren’t making any promises. We fail God in so many ways, and yet He always for-gives us. We are so blessed to be His children and re-ceive the lavish love He gives us every day. What an amazing and forgiving God we have. When our hearts are afraid to admit our failures (of which there are many), He give us the courage to admit them. Above all, God gives us courage and strength when our own is failing us every day. We need to thank God for watching over us and serve Him as we should. Prayer: Lord, we fail You so many times every day, but You are always there to encourage and support us. Nudge us when we start to fail You. Help us put You number One on our things for which we are thankful. Thank You for Your love. In Jesus Holy Name. Amen

Thank you!Deep Gratitude, During the past four year I have had the opportu-nity to meet many people from Dayton and the surrounding area. Whether at community events, at the Southeast Webster Grand School, worship services, or on the streets, I have met many of you. During my last weeks many of you have been kind and express good wishes. As I leave this community where I lived and served as pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, I am thankful for this community of caring people. Thank you for your support and words of encouragement. As I prepare to begin serving a new congregation in Northwest Washington, I recall the many memories and wonderful people who crossed my path. Best wishes to you. ~Arhiana Shek

Jaguar boy’s golfteam starts seasonwith great 3-1 record The 2016 edition of Jaguar golf opened their season strongly at Manson Golf Course. Paced by junior Keegan Goodwin’s two under 34 score, the Jags shot a fine 158. The Jags defeated GTRA, Sioux Central and hosted Manson in the process. Conner Conrad’s 39 brought home the runner-up medal, and Logan Boerner’s 40 finished gave him a third place finish individually. Other SV golf scores were Josh Johnson, 45; Michael Vosberg, 52; and Garrett Houdek, 54. Nolan Brand’s 46 paced the Jaguars junior var-sity team. The Jag’s golf team suffered a 169 to 161 team golf defeat to the St. Edmonds Gaels in Gowrie. After an impressive 158 team score the night before in Manson, the Jags could not take advantage of the home course and struggled a bit to finish at 169. Keegan Goodwin paced the Jags with a 39, fol-lowed closely by Conner Conrad’s 40. Logan Boerner golfed a 44, and Josh Johnson’s score was 46. Zach Ball and Mitch Reck lead the junior varsity squad with 51s. The Jags are now 3 -1 on their young season.

Landowners call the Law Enforcement Center When conducting a burn... Webster County Emergency Management is re-questing that landowners in Webster County call the Law Enforcement Center, my office, Webster County Sheriffs office, or their local fire chief to let them know if they plan on burning in the county. Webster County currently does not have a coun-ty wide burn ordinance so it is important to notify offi-cials when burning. The issue we get is when a landowner conducts a burn, someone that drives by or sees the fire calls 911 to report a fire. Then dispatch will send out the appropriate fire agency based on the caller information. The rural county departments are volunteers and are coming from all different locations in an emergency response only to find out it is a controlled or intentionally set fire by the landowner to remove CRP, untilled/grassy/crop residue. The information we are requesting on a burn is: Callers name, address time/date of burn, and the caller’s phone number.Contact Information:Law Enforcement Center 573-2323Webster County Sheriff 573-1410Webster County Emergency Management 573-1403Or your local Fire Chief.Thank you,Scott ForbesWebster County Emergency Management Coordinator

Anna is the daughter of Denis and Lila Heatherington of Fort Dodge. Anna is currently a senior at Southeast Valley High School in Gowrie and is planning to attend Iowa State University in the fall. During high school, Anna has been involved in stu-dent council, FCCLA, National Honor Society, Math Club, Spanish Club, softball, track, cross country, the spring play and musical. Anna has spent a great deal of time volunteering in her community by participating in FFA and 4-H, ringing bells for Salvation Army, working at the Village General Store, working church suppers and speaking in front of the congregation, and participating in the Otho Memorial Day Service. Anna credits being born into a farm family with her appreciation of agriculture and realize the vital role farmers have in today’s society. “I started learning about the family farm operation at a young age. As I got older, I eventually bought and showed my own cattle and drove the tractor my-self. My work experience varies from helping build a fence, to bottle feeding a newborn calf,” Anna explains. Her experi-ence has made her want to learn more about agriculture and share her knowledge and enthusiasm toward a business near and dear to her heart. Anna is planning to enter college in the field of Agriculture Studies with a possible minor in Com-munications Studies. She says, “I don’t want to leave college with just a degree; I want to leave college with experiences that will last a lifetime. One dream I have is to visit a third world country to volunteer and learn more about other cul-tures. Iowa State’s study abroad program can help me fulfill this dream.” Webster County Farm Bureau congratulates Anna and sends its best wishes for all of her future endeavors.
