THE RESPONSE | Psalm 16 Margaret Tice & Steve Bohall, readers Conserva me, Domine

The Leader and the People pray responsively      Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;  I have no good apart from you.”

 As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,  in whom is all my delight.  Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;

their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out  or take their names upon my lips.  The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;  you hold my lot.  The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;  I have a goodly heritage.  I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;  in the night also my heart instructs me.  I keep the Lord always before me;  because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.  Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;  my body also rests secure.  For you do not give me up to Sheol,

or let your faithful one see the Pit.  You show me the path of life.  In your presence there is fullness of joy;  in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

GRADUAL HYMN | “Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken”

1. Jesus, I my cross have taken,  All to leave and follow Thee.  Destitute, despised, forsaken,  Thou from hence my all shall be.  Perish every fond ambition, All I’ve sought or hoped or known.  Yet how rich is my condition! God and heaven are still my own.  2. Let the world despise and leave me,  They have left my Savior, too. Human hearts and looks deceive me;  Thou art not, like them, untrue. O while Thou dost smile upon me,  God of wisdom, love, and might, Foes may hate and friends disown me,  Show Thy face and all is bright.

4. Go, then, earthly fame and treasure,  Come disaster, scorn and pain In Thy service, pain is pleasure, With Thy favor, loss is gain I have called Thee Abba Father, I have stayed my heart on Thee Storms may howl, and clouds may gather;  All must work for good to me.  6. Haste thee on from grace to glory,  Armed by faith, and winged by prayer.  Heaven’s eternal days before thee,  God’s own hand shall guide us there.  Soon shall close thy earthly mission,  Soon shall pass thy pilgrim days,  Hope shall change to glad fruition,  Faith to sight, and prayer to praise.

PUBLIC DOMAIN. MUSIC: Bill Moore, © 2001 Bill Moore Music   THE GOSPEL READING | JOHN 21  Minister The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People  Glory to you, Lord Christ.  After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias;                             and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas                           called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of                               his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will                                 go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was                                 Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They answered him,                             “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find                                     some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so                                     many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon                               Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped                                   into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for                                   they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off.

When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10

Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter                                 CCLI License #53025 4

went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them;                               and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and                                 have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because                             they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did                                     the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples                                 after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do                             you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.”                                   Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John,                                   do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to                                     him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love                                   me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he                                   said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him,                                 “Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your                                 own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out                                 your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do                                 not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify                                   God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one                             who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going                                     to betray you?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus said                                 to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” So                                         the rumor spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not                               say to him that he would not die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what                                         is that to you?”

This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know                                 that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every                                 one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the                               books that would be written.

THE NICENE CREED    We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation   he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit   he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,   and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;   he suffered death and was buried.   On the third day he rose again   in accordance with the Scriptures;   he ascended into heaven   and is seated at the right hand of the Father.   He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,   and his kingdom will have no end.  We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING  The Lord be with you. And also with you.  Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.  It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:  SANCTUS

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.  He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.  On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”  After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”  Therefore, according to his command, O Father.  We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;  And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.  We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with St. Michael and all the angels, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.  By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,   THE LORD’S PRAYER  Our Father, who art in heaven,  hallowed be thy Name,  thy kingdom come,  thy will be done,  on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,  as we forgive those  who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,  and the power, and the glory,  for ever and ever. Amen.   THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD  Celebrant Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.  People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!   Celebrant  The Gifts of God for the People of God.

Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you,  and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

PRAYER FOR “SPIRITUAL COMMUNION”  Lord Jesus Christ, with the faithful at every altar of your Church - and especially                             those at the table of All Angels Church - where your death and passion are pleaded                               before the Father, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving; I present to you my                               soul and body with the heartfelt wish that I may be ever united to you. And since I                                   cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I                             unite myself to you with all the affections of my soul. Let nothing ever separate me                               from you. Let me live and die in your love.

O God our Father, whose Son our Lord Jesus Christ gave, in this wonderful                           Sacrament, a memorial of his passion: Grant that we might so cherish the sacred                           mysteries of his Body and Blood, that we may ever perceive within ourselves the fruit                             of his redemption; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for                               ever and ever. Amen. ( adapted from BCP 201)   COMMUNION HYMN | “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross”

1. Jesus, keep me near the cross: There a precious fountain, free to all, a healing stream,  flows from Calvary's mountain.   In the cross, in the cross be my glory ever,  till my ransomed soul shall find rest beyond the river.  2. Near the cross, a trembling soul,  love and mercy found me; there the Bright and Morning Star shed His beams around me.

3. Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me; help me walk from day to day with its shadow o'er me.   4. Near the cross I'll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever, till I reach the golden strand, just beyond the river.

And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father,                         so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all                                   such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our                               Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without                               end.
