April 18, 2021Third Sunday of Easter
Life is springing up all around us. Have you seen the blossoming trees or smelled the scrumptious honeysuckle? What joy! Of course, that means that not just a few of us are sniffling and sneezing in the wake of all that goodness. New life comes with all kinds of side effects, be it allergies due to pollen, sleepless nights with a newborn or downright discombobulating awe when your life takes a turn — even for the good.
We come to worship this week after more than a year of really hard living, and perhaps we can sense a transition on the horizon. More and more people have been vaccinated. Families and friends are cautiously reuniting. States and municipalities are starting to carefully (or not so carefully) reopen. Even our church has its sights on in-person indoor services in a matter of weeks. This is new and different. Here in the Easter season, new life is buzzing with a palpa-ble bit of hope.
Let us not forget to anticipate the side effects, though. As we prepare our hearts, souls, minds and bodies for worship, I wonder how we might bring God both our high hopes of the season and all of its side effects, too. Our minds can
wondrously imagine the return to life together out of isolation, but our bodies know what we all just went through. That is holy knowing, beloveds. Preparing for worship in the fullest sense means using that knowledge. It means gathering up our whole selves in offering to God. It means pulling out all of our dreams and all of our fears, collecting all of our strengths and all of our sores and offering ourselves to be tended and transformed by the arms of grace.
Worship is an honest act. It cannot be done any other way.
With new life catching our eye (and perhaps making it itchy), let us not lose sight of the en-tirety of our sacred and embodied existence. We are both joyful and aching. We are excited and scared. We are ready and we are hesitant.
This is new life. It is good and it will challenge us in ways we do not always expect. So let us turn to its Maker. Let us walk in step with the Firstborn of this New Creation. Let us give our entire selves in worship to the One who makes us whole.

Prelude All Creatures of Our God and King arr. Michael Ware
Call to Worship With a Voice of Singing Kenneth JenningsNova
Recorded May 7, 2017
With a voice of singing declare ye, and tell this; Utter it even to the end of the earth. Hallelujah!
The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob. Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Make a joyful noise unto God all ye lands.Sing forth the honor of his Name, sing forth the honor of his Name;
Make his praise glorious.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Opening Sentences Adam Scheuermann
We want to know that the risen Christ still lives among us. In our worship this day, may we perceive him with our eyes, hear his message with our ears and experience new and abundant life in our bones. Nourish us, O God, with the teachings of your Son, whose body given for us is the bread of life.

Psalm Reading — Psalm 4:1, 6–8 Jenna Sullivan
Answer me when I call, O God of my right! You gave me room when I was in distress. Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer. There are many who say, “O that we might see some good! Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!” You have put gladness in my heart more than when their grain and wine abound. I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.
Responde a mi clamor, Dios mío y defensor mío.

Gospel Reading — Luke 24:36–43 Leigh Curl
While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate in their presence.
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gracias a Dios.

What a joy it was to see each other and gather on Palm Sunday and Easter. We were encour-aged by the great turnout for these in-person opportunities that provided a safe way to begin transitioning back to corporate worship. These services, along with the introduction of Midweek Bible Study and youth and children’s programming, have served as the first aspect of our phased approach to safely returning to indoor activities as outlined in our March report (available at wilshirebc.org/covid).
Beginning April 20, the next phase com-mences with church office hours resuming on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. As we continue to monitor COVID-19 sta-tistics in Dallas relative to vaccinations and risk level, we are simultaneously solidifying plans for returning to worship services in the Sanctuary on June 6. We are looking forward to sharing specific plans for summer in-person worship and protocols in the coming weeks. Stay tuned as we provide the plan for return that upholds the SEE principle of providing a Safe Experi-ence for Every Body.

Wilshire is co-hosting a free virtual Rama-dan dinner with Dialogue Institute of Dallas on Monday, April 19, at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
The holy month of Ramadan, which began April 12 this year, is a period of fasting and spiritual growth for Muslims worldwide. The Dialogue Institute has a long tradition of cel-ebrating this spiritual and charitable month at fast-breaking dinners with interfaith part-ners, including Wilshire.
While the event can’t be held in person this year, we can still share friendship and make meaningful conversations online. A free Ramadan dinner (dates, beef sauté, rice with chickpeas, mashed potatoes, vegetable salad,
Kemel Pasha dessert) prepared by the Insti-tute will be available to pick up at Wilshire between 5 and 5:55 p.m. on April 19, but this is optional; you are welcome to join the event without picking up a meal.
Dialogue Institute Dallas (dialoguedallas.org) is a nonprofit organization that pro-motes mutual understanding, respect and cooperation among people of diverse faiths and cultures by creating opportunities for direct communication.

Pray for Wilshire health care workers
Rapid-response teams availableHealth Response Team is comprised of medical professionals in the church who are willing to make themselves available for general counsel and encouragement. These volunteers are not dis-pensing medical care but are available for general questions and guidance, especially when it may be harder to get to a doctor. Lead contact is Linda Garner, [email protected] or 214-452-3151. Food and Supplies Response Team is comprised of volunteers from our Missions and Ad-vocacy committees who are at the ready to help those who are isolated and need food or other supplies brought to them. We have identified existing designated and budget funds that will be used to meet urgent needs of members, such as food and medicine and limited rent assistance. Lead contact is Heather Mustain, [email protected] or 214-452-3110. Spiritual Support Response Team is comprised of trained lay leaders and staff who are available to talk with members who are lonely, scared or just need to talk during this time of isolation. This is not a substitute for professional counseling. Volunteers will call care receiv-ers on at least a weekly basis to listen to them and offer emotional support. Other referrals for additional identified needs will be made to the appropriate teams or staff. Lead contact is Gail Brookshire, [email protected].
