KEYNOTE ADDRESSThe General Counsel as lawyer/statesmanBen Heineman Jr Moderated by Catherine McGregorBen Heineman Jr, legendary former General Counsel of GE and pre-eminent thinker on the role of the in-house lawyer in the modern organisation, will present a keynote address which argues that the General Counsel has a new function: that of lawyer/statesman. This shift is one that is needed to keep up with the demands of global corporations and requires a reconfiguration of the role of the lawyer from reactive to proactive.

Tom Sager is the former General Counsel at DuPont Co. Mr. Sager was a strong and early proponent of diversity in the legal profession and helped pioneer the DuPont Convergence and Law Firm Partnering Program, or DuPont Legal Model – an industry benchmark that has received national acclaim for its innovative approach to the business of practising law. The program redefined the way in which law firms measure success, encourage creativity and collaboration, increase efficiency, and retain and promote women and minorities.

Ben W. Heineman Jr. was GE’s senior vice president–general counsel from 1987 to 2003 and then senior vice president for law and public affairs from 2004 until his retirement at the end of 2005. He is currently a senior fellow at Harvard Law School’s Program on the Legal Profession and Program on Corporate Governance, a senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and a lecturer in law at Yale Law School.

Tim Harford is an economist, journalist and broadcaster. He is author of the million-selling ‘The Undercover Economist’, a senior columnist at the Financial Times, and the presenter of Radio 4’s ‘More or Less’. Tim has spoken at TED, PopTech and the Sydney Opera House and is a visiting fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford. He was Economics Commentator of the Year 2014, winner of the Royal Statistical Society journalistic excellence award 2015, and also won the Society of Business Economists writing prize 2014-15.

Ritva Sotamaa, LL.M. has been Chief Legal Officer of Unilever PLC/NV since 2013. Ritva served as General Counsel at Siemens Healthcare, Siemens AG from 2009 to 2013. She also held several General Counsel positions at GE Healthcare, General Electric Company from 2003 to 2009.

Ellis Watson is Chief Executive of DC Thomson Publishing, one of the world’s largest family-owned media groups. He was previously global CEO of Syco Entertainment, the joint venture between Simon Cowell and Sony - running the global format and commercial strategies for The X Factor and Got Talent, as well as the recorded music businesses. The Syco appointment followed spells on the board of Menzies and FirstGroup, the huge public transport operator with brands from First Great Western to America’s Greyhound Bus network. Before that he was at the helm of Mirror Group Newspapers, running five national titles.

Karen Dillon is the co-author of New York Times best-seller, ‘How Will You Measure Your Life?’ (HarperCollins, May 2012), which she wrote with Harvard Business School Professor and best-selling author Clayton Christensen. Dillon was the editor of Harvard Business Review (HBR), arguably the most influential management magazine in the world, until 2011. Prior to joining HBR, she was deputy editor of Inc., a monthly magazine for entrepreneurs.

Patrick Rowe joined Accenture in 1995. During his time at Accenture he has worked in a variety of different roles in Legal. Currently Patrick is Deputy General Counsel with global responsibility for compliance, operational matters, regulatory and ethics programmes. Prior to joining, he worked in commercial litigation for a law firm in Australia. Patrick has a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Law from the University of Western Australia and is a qualified solicitor in Australia and in the UK.

Barry Matthews is Director of Legal Affairs & Third Party Sales at ITV having joined the broadcaster in 2004. Matthews is one of the pioneers of the Legal Social Mobility Partnership, an alliance of law firms and in-house teams providing enriching legal work insight and skills training to year 11, 12 and 13 students from disadvantaged backgrounds. ITV was also the first company to offer a solicitor apprenticeship under the Trailblazers Apprenticeship in Law initiative. The team will take on one apprentice, who will start in September 2016 and qualify as a solicitor with the company in August 2022.

Kirsty Cooper has been Group General Counsel and Company Secretary of Aviva plc since 2010 and serves as its Head of the Office of the Chairman. Kirsty has been a Group Executive at Aviva plc since May 2012. She established the legal and company secretarial function as a global team and is responsible for the provision of legal services to the Group, legal risk management, and compliance with UK and US listing requirements. She also supports the Chairman and the Board in the discharge of their responsibilities. She joined Aviva in 1991.

Matthew Flood is the global General Counsel for Ingeus. Ingeus operates in 12 countries, with its biggest market being the UK. While most of its services are related to workforce development, it has recently become the 2nd largest provider of the UK Government’s National Citizenship Programme, and taken on offender rehabilitation and probation services for the Ministry of Justice as part of the Reducing Reoffending Partnership.

Richard Moorhead took up the first Chair in Law and Professional Ethics at University College London, Faculty of Laws, in 2012. He is also the Director of the Centre for Ethics and Law. His work focuses on lawyers’ ethics, professional competence, the regulation of legal services and access to justice. Often employing empirical methods, he has conducted a wide range of studies, including for the Ministry of Justice, Legal Services Board, Civil Justice Council, and the Law Society.

He has been a member of the Civil Justice Council and the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Legal Ethics, the Legal Services Consultative Panel. He has also served as Specialist Adviser to what is now the Justice Select Committee. He sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of the Legal Profession and the advisory board of the Journal of Law and Society.

RICHARD MOORHEADUCL

Paul Gilbert leads many of LBC’s significant projects and lectures in the UK, Europe, North America and South Africa. Themes include legal services strategy, skills development and the changing face of the legal profession. Paul qualified as a UK solicitor in 1987 and for much of his career he was an in-house lawyer. Paul was the General Counsel in two major UK financial services companies and held positions as chairman and chief executive of the national in-house lawyers Commerce & Industry Group. For six years Paul was a Council Member of the England & Wales Law Society and was elected to the Society’s Main Management Board.

Richard Burcher has over 35 years’ experience as a New Zealand practising lawyer and managing partner. Following post–graduate study in pricing–related disciplines, Richard established Validatum® in 2008. As Managing Director of Validatum (UK) Limited, he has been based in London since 2012. Legal commentators regularly describe him as the leading law firm pricing consultant in the world.

His pricing consultancy services and speaking engagements take him throughout the UK, Asia, India, Europe, Australasia and North America.

Steph Hogg is an experienced procurement professional who has worked within the financial services sector for the past 15 years, and is one of a handful of Legal sourcing specialists in the UK.

Specialising in legal services procurement, Steph has worked with FTSE 100 company Aviva’s GC team for the last four years to source and manage complex Legal Panels, and is passionate about world-class value propositions and relationship management.
