Bargello designs are worked in straight stitches and may form geometric patterns, motifs or miters. Stitches may repeat or change from line to line. The ex-amples here show a zigzag pattern, a diamond motif, a wave, and a mitered four-way design. Bargello is also known as flame stitch, Irish stitch, Hungarian point or
Florentine stitch and is often used for uphol-stered cushions or pillows. Some of the earliest examples are housed in the Bargello Museum in Florence, Italy and include chairs, curtains and wall hangings from the sixteenth century. Traditionally, Bargello was worked in wool, often using a variety of shades of a single color to create a shaded ef-fect. Today, we can choose from silks, cottons, and even bamboo and soy. Experiment with the stitches on painted canvas, too.
Bargello Easter Egg Our Bargello Easter egg features heart motifs, curves and zigzag patterns in pink, apricot and lavender. Stitches are worked with five plies of DMC floss on 18 ct. canvas, using a #20 tapestry needle. The egg is 3 inches high and 1 3/4 inches wide. Back to Basics—Bad habits broken here
The name says it all. In this notebook class, Tony will help you improve your stitching by taking you back to basics. You will learn new techniques and review those you may have forgotten—stitching pathways, beginning and end-ing stitches, and much more. You will leave this class with increased confi-dence and skills to make your canvas perfect.
Canvas Enhancement
A Canvas enhancement class with Tony is a great way to learn new techniques and stitches on a canvas purchased at the Needle Works. Select a canvas from your stash or, better yet, get that new canvas you love. We’ll send it to Tony, and he will select the perfect threads and write a stitch guide with personalized diagrams just for you and your canvas. When class starts, you will work one-on-one with Tony to learn the stitches and perfect your tech-nique. These classes always fill quickly, so sign up now!
Safari Teapot
African animals adorn the latest teapot in Tony’s series. A giraffe’s neck serves as the handle and an elephant’s trunk for the spout. A snake winds around the base, and a lion sits regally in front. The teapot is topped with a pith helmet for a lid. Drawn on 24-count Congress Cloth with Tony’s stitch guide.
African Batik
A companion piece to Patterns of the Orient, Journey to Satchidananda, and In the Footsteps of the Pharaohs.
