April is Child Abuse Prevention Month The month of April is recognized nationwide as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Prevention accord-ing to Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana (www.pcal.org), refers to activities that stop and ac-tion or behavior, or the promotion of a positive action or behavior. Research has found that successful child abuse prevention must address both. These goals are at the heart of the Diocese of Lafayette’s program “A Safe Environment for the Protection of Children and Young People.” You, your family, church and school communities can order “Pinwheels for Prevention” at www.pcal.org. To report Child Abuse, please call: 1-855-4LA-KIDS (1-855-452-5437). From the Pastor’s Desk

I have only begun to explore the riches of Pope Francis recent exhortation on “The Joy of Love”, which is a response to the two sessions of the Synod of Bishops held in 2014 and 2015. This 260 page document explores many aspects of marriage and family, including the recognition of challenges and shortcomings. But I want to share at least a few quotes, as I often do. More can be found on our parish web site, stpat.org.

“31. The welfare of the family is decisive for the future of the world and that of the Church. Countless studies have been made of marriage and the family, their current problems and challenges. We do well to focus on concrete realities, since “the call and the demands of the Spirit resound in the events of history”, and through these “the Church can also be guided to a more profound understanding of the inexhaustible mystery of marriage and the fami-ly”.

“33. On the other hand, “equal consideration needs to be given to the growing danger represented by an ex-treme individualism which weakens family bonds and ends up considering each member of the family as an isolated unit, leading in some cases to the idea that one’s personality is shaped by his or her desires, which are considered absolute”. “The tensions created by an overly individualistic culture, caught up with possessions and pleasures, leads to intolerance and hostility in families”. Here I would also include today’s fast pace of life, stress and the organization of society and labor, since all these are cultural factors which militate against permanent decisions. We also encoun-ter widespread hostility in families”.

“54. In this brief overview, I would like to stress the fact that, even though significant advances have been made in the recognition of women’s rights and their participation in public life, in some countries much remains to be done to promote these rights. Unacceptable customs still need to be eliminated. I think particularly of the shame-ful ill-treatment to which women are sometimes subjected, domestic violence and various forms of enslavement which, rather than a show of masculine power, are craven acts of cowardice. The verbal, physical, and sexual vio-lence that women endure in some marriages contradicts the very nature of the conjugal union.

“123. After the love that unites us to God, conjugal love is the “greatest form of friendship”. It is a union pos-sessing all the traits of a good friendship: concern for the good of the other, reciprocity, intimacy, warmth, stability and the resemblance born of a shared life. Marriage joins to all this an indissoluble exclusivity expressed in the stable commitment to share and shape together the whole of life.“
