SPOTLIGHT FNR Graduate Seminar TODAY, April 16: The consumptive uses of wildlife and why they matter for conservation in the U.S. This seminar will build upon the premise that regulated hunting, angling, and trapping are a primary source of conservation funding and critical for the sustainability of many wildlife species in the United States. The perpetuation of these activities, advancement of policy, and funding of research is facilitated in a large part by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). What drives these NGOs, what role do they play, and is the academic community collaborating with them to the fullest? Join us to find out! The seminar will take place at 3:30 pm in PFEN 241. Tree Planting Workshop THIS SATURDAY: Sign-up Today! Brian Beheler and Ryan Hensley will be facilitating a tree planting workshop Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Lugar Forestry Farm. Topics include: planning, site preparation, storage and handling, planting method details, and post-planning care. There will also be hands-on tree planting with a machine, by hand, and augered holes. Come to the OSS (PFEN G003) to sign-up. Only 2 spots are available! Field Assistants Needed for Summer 2019 Forest Research Undergraduates will have an opportunity to collaborate with four different interdisciplinary labs on laboratory and field work focused on plant and ecosystem ecology, forestry, and plant-insect interactions. Wildlife Internship Opportunity at Hoosier National Forest The Hoosier National Forest and the National Wild Turkey Federation will be offering internship positions for the summer of 2019. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to gain wildlife experience, perform wildlife projects and to

learn about the U.S. Forest Service and NWTF. These internships were developed for those going into the wildlife biology/natural resource fields. Applications are due this Friday, April 19. Internship at the Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning Commission The SIRPC is seeking an intern who is interested in acquiring multi-disciplinary work experience working at a regional entity who addresses a variety of community planning and development opportunities and issues. The position will allow the intern to learn and provide staff assistance in the planning and execution of community/economic development projects. The Hoosier National Forest and the National Wild Turkey Federation will be offering

internship positions for the summer of 2019. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to gain

wildlife experience, perform wildlife projects and to learn about the US Forest Service and NWTF.

These internships were developed for those going into the wildlife biology/natural resource fields.

POSITION:

The USFS/NWTF internship is available to students seeking to learn more about these two organizations

while accomplishing habitat improvement projects on the ground. They shall work with and be

mentored by a wildlife biologists, botanists, soil scientists and/or foresters. They need to possess a valid

driver’s license. The intern will also be working independently at times, outdoors, with varying weather

conditions and terrain. Most restoration projects will include seeding, driving equipment, using hand

tools, creating wildlife piles, using GPS equipment, botanical/ wildlife surveys, spraying herbicide,

working in wetlands and early successional habitat.

The intern will be based out of Bedford, Indiana and will use the Hoosier National Forest office as a

reporting station. They shall work approximately 800-430, M-F, and can be paid up to $8.00/HR.

Starting date is approximately June 1 and can last up to 12 weeks. The intern will be responsible for a

pair of work boots, lunches and recording daily work activities. Work hours can be negotiable. The

starting date can be in May if this is convenient for the intern. Some interns have worked through

December, when funding allows. There is no housing available.

This individual needs to be HIGHLY motivated, independent and energetic. Showing initiative will be a

must. This will be an excellent chance for someone to gain field experience fast. This is perfect training

for a student wanting to become a wildlife biologist. Any questions can be directed to Steve Harriss,

based out of the US Forest Service office in Bedford.

past experience, career goals, contact information, 2 references and a paragraph of why they want the

internship. Resumes should be addressed to Steve and received by April 19th. Emailed or mailed

resumes are fine. Getting college credits for this is up to you.
