Upon entering third grade in our Sunday School, each student receives a
Bible of their very own. The first quarter of the Sunday School year is
spent in a unit studying about the Bible and how to use it. During this
unit, the students learned that the Bible is still being translated into new
languages, and the students wanted to further that important mission
work. On January 22, they participated in a “Bowling for Bibles” activity
as a fund raiser for Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT). LBT will use the
money for computers and computer programs in literacy in Liberia, West
Africa. The total amount raised was $1,105.25. The students are so grate-
ful for the generous support of the congregation!

The Biblical word “Sabbath” means “rest.” A word
derived from that Biblical word and concept is the term Sabbatical. A com-
mon practice in most Universities and Church bodies, the idea of a
“professional Sabbatical” has been encouraged and even required for several
centuries. The idea behind it is that professors, educators, and pastors give
themselves over to their work to such a degree that a time of rejuvenation
and refreshing is seen to provide an essential benefit for both the individual
as well as the future of the institution served.
Sabbaticals tend to be individually crafted by each professional to
give a time of rest that allows them to pursue some sort of goal and unique
adventure that makes them reenergized, rejuvenated and better equipped to
serve their current institution for many years to come. Professors at Univer-
sities normally take between 6 and 12 months for a typical sabbati-
cal. Pastors tend to take 3 to 6 months, with the experts warning that any-
thing less than 3 months risks limiting the effectiveness of the “break.”
A number of years ago Pastor Krause introduced me to a Christian
foundation in Indiana that gives grants to pastors for sabbaticals. They will
give up to $50,000 to a congregation to support their pastor in taking one of
these life changing experiences. It is suggested that the pastor be at their
current church at least 5 years before applying and perhaps even longer.
When Pastor Krause mentioned it to me the thought of five or ten years at
Immanuel seemed like a lifetime away. Believe it or not, this month will
make 15 years of God creating a partnership between Immanuel Lutheran
church and me serving as your pastor! This year also marks my 20th anniver-
sary of my Ordination. Where did the years go?? While it may seem like just
yesterday that I arrived back in DeKalb to serve as your pastor, the thousands
of lives that I’ve had the honor of serving and touching over so many phases
of life remind me that the years have indeed passed. Immanuel is without a
doubt my family, and while I am tasked with being your pastor, my love for
you all goes so much deeper than simply serving in that role as my job.
I’ve spoken with many of Immanuel’s leaders about the possibility
of a sabbatical. Numerous boards and individuals have encouraged me to
explore the idea more fully. This caused me to think “what would I do?” with
this time. I’ve given that a fair amount of thought over the past six months
and if given the opportunity, I’d like to continue a writing project I’ve been
working on for about a decade. I’m writing a series of stories, with four al-
ready completed, in the style of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, which uses a
fantasy world to express God’s message of love in a creative way. Should we

April 1—May 14, 2017 Page 20
together decide to pursue this, my dream would be to spend about 11 weeks
living in Auckland, New Zealand with my family, giving me daily time for
dedicated writing as well as exploring a land known to be the “the most
fantastical place on earth.” The Lord of the Rings movies, the Narnia mov-
ies and many others were all filmed in New Zealand because it inspires the
imagination. I would love to have that inspiration to help me in my writ-
ings. The idea of having relationships with people from around the world
(Auckland itself is made up largely of people from around the world, not
just New Zealanders!) is incredibly exciting to me.
In case you were wondering, this adventure would not be the same
without Krista and the kids along. Krista would home school the children
and we’d keep in touch with their school to make sure they can integrate
back in smoothly upon our return. I can’t even imagine the stories and
memories they would have for the rest of their lives from this experience.
Riley would run with a track club in Auckland, Sadie would take art les-
sons, and Carter and Chloe would also find ways to plug into the culture
there.
As you all know, I think, preach, teach and counsel in a
storytelling way. The idea of having a unique story to tell from this adven-
ture, coupled with learning the stories of others from across the globe, is
about enough to make my head pop off with excitement! Upon my return
I will have stories to tell, sermon illustrations for years, and a new and ex-
cited spirit to get at God’s work here in DeKalb which will hopefully help
us all to be better and more effective servants.
While I love you all, I must admit that fifteen years have taken a
drain on me from time to time. A time to refresh would likely do me good,
even if I don’t fully realize it right now. I’d like to think I’m as excited and
honored as ever to serve in this role, and the thought of several months
away without the constant responsibility (yes, even on days off and vaca-
tions) seems both scary and exciting.
Pastor Ray and Darlene have assured me that they can handle
things just fine and I do not doubt their ability in the slightest. As a second-
ary benefit this would give pastor Ray the opportunity to be in the lead pas-
toral role of our congregation, a role he is well-equipped and excited to
take. Others within the congregation would have the opportunity to step into
leadership roles they may have not tried before. While I hope my presence
is missed a little, I’m excited for the opportunity for the people of Immanuel
to have their own adventure and stories to tell me about upon my return.
The grant from the Lily Foundation is highly competitive, so it is very pos-
sible our request will not be selected, but I hope you prayerfully and excit-
edly consider this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us all. While I was
gone on the Spring Break trip, the Church council put a voters meeting on
the books for April 11th at 7pm to discuss and hopefully approve us apply-
ing for the grant as a congregation.

Everything Matters —Pastor Ray Krueger
God’s Word teaches us, “For everything there is a season,
and a time for every matter under heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck
up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break
down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time
to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to
gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from em-
bracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to
cast away; 7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a
time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a
time for peace.
We learn numerous things about what matters in this life we are living. It
should open our minds through the Holy Spirit that what we do, every-
thing we do, matters. Not only what we do but what we choose not to do
matters. What we do defines us as individuals, what we choose not to
do, defines us as individuals. As Christ’s body, the Church, what we do
both individually and corporately matters! What we choose not to do
individually and corporately matters!
We must be careful to protect and honor God by what we say and do and
what we choose not do because it does matter. God teaches us that each
of us matters and out of His unconditional love for us grants us the gift of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for new life, eternal life, life forgiven,
life set free from sin death and the devil, life that matters.
The Body of Christ is to reflect the love and character of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ! We join together encouraging and building each
other up into Christ recognizing that all we do matters and all we do not
do matters. We recognize that none of us does this perfectly but we also
recognize each of us matters in the Body of Christ for God has brought
us together for a purpose that is a matter of eternal life or eternal death
and torment. Everything matters! You matter! Join together as the
Body of Christ for YOU MATTER!
Your Servant in Christ,
Pastor Ray

Reformation Nook: For those who have not visited the
Reformation Nook in the Board Room on the upper level, per-
haps the following introduction might prove to be useful. To
reach this room, take the church elevator to the 3rd level, enter
the 2nd door on your right as you exit the elevator.
Locate the thin book which is usually on the table, entitled ‘Martin Lu-
ther – a man who changed the world’ by Paul L. Maier. Reading this
book provides one with a glimpse of how and why the Reformation oc-
curred.
Take the 2016-2017 Commemorative Calendar off the wall and view the
pictures while reading the descriptions below. As you are doing this, you
will observe that nearly every day of this 16- month calendar marks the
anniversary of some occurrence during the Reformation years.
On the book shelf, you will notice a small black 3 ring binder entitled
‘Information’. Open this binder to find:
1) More information about the banner hanging on the wall inside the left
cover.
2) The first page in this binder provides information about checking out
and requesting your own copies of the any of the volumes on the book
shelf.
3) The succeeding pages in the binder provide brief remarks about each
volume.
A Note from CJ
Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As many of you may remember , I graduated in
the Lay Ministry program at Concordia University Wisconsin in December 2015.
The Lord has blessed me abundantly in completing this program and becoming a
Certified Lay Minister. I feel the Lord is calling me as His humble servant to further
serve Him. As part of serving Christ, I would like to offer Christian caregiving to
others. I want to share the love, compassion and healing found in our Lord and Sav-
ior, Jesus Christ with those hurting in this world. This will provide an opportunity
to share hurts or needs and discuss in a Christian focused way. Some examples may
include loss of a loved one, stressors in life and/or relationships, self-esteem, person-
al spiritual growth, or finding answers to some of life’s problems through scripture.
If when working together we ascertain any issues go beyond my expertise or beyond
sharing the love of Christ through His Word, prayer and devotion, I will assist you
in finding appropriate referrals. Please give me a call or email at
[email protected]. God’s peace to you always.

Time & Talent
As you drive into, and enter the church, here at Immanuel, Dekalb, you may
have noticed some changes recently. A new shed has been built to house our
mower tractor and other church equipment. The Narthex has been painted
and new bulletin boards and furniture have been added, there is a new con-
ference room upstairs. There are some new pipes on the outside of the build-
ing that represent a roof and drain repair over the nursery and a new set of
boilers installed to replace our 50 year old unit with 2 energy efficient units.
There is painting and remodeling underway in fellowship hall and hallway
area. we hope to have the floors downstairs refinished in early summer.
There has been work done on all the entry doors also.
Although all this work, and more, is made possible by your financial support
of the Lord's house it is also made possible through the work of many to
share their Time and Talent whenever possible. There are many ways to
serve our church. The church has many ministries and opportunities. Hope
Garden will be starting soon, mowing will begin, there is still painting, land-
scaping, planting, trees to cut and trim, a playground area that needs refur-
bishing and much more. We are truly blessed here at Immanuel Lutheran
Church to have such a wonderful place to worship and share the Lord's word
and to have the congregation we have to share it with others. Sometimes all it
takes is an hour or 2 of your time and talent to help make all this possible.
Come join us when you can, we look forward to that time of fellowship.
Steve Brown and the Board of Trustees
Saturday, April 22, 2017

We are excited for VBS this summer! VBS dates

God's world through music, crafts, games, snacks, and Bible lessons. Mark your
calendars and tell your friends. Registration will begin in mid May. We will be
looking volunteers in all areas so please prayerfully consider helping and being
part of this important ministry. You can contact me at 815-5018354 or email

University Village family nights continue of the third Tuesday of
each month in the University Village Community Room.
Thanks to all who helped spread the love of Jesus last Tuesday
night through our Family Night program "The Hidden Life of
Trees." Those attending learned that the language of trees is
"scent!" For example, trees warn other nearby trees of predators by giv-
ing off gas when attacked, so other trees can pump toxic substance for
their protection. The marvels of God's creation are truly many. Our
game of Tree Tag, learning about tress, and fruity snack all made for an
enjoyable gathering. Our next program is slated for April 18. Can you
join us?
Sound like fun? Come, meet our neighbors on Tuesday, April 18 and May
17 from 6—7:30 p.m. and join in a FUN TIME!

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER MAY 4, 2017
National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 4. The theme
this year is “For Your Great Name’s Sake! Hear
Us...Forgive Us… Heal Us!” Taken form Daniel 9:19,
which says, “O Lord, listen! Oh Lord, forgive! O Lord, Hear and Act! For
Your sake, O My God…
The church will be open during the day for you to come and pray. Also,
there will be any email with suggestions for who to pray for, and then for-
ward to others.
The church will be available for praying from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
(Please note Little Lambs will be having chapel at 9:30 a.m. and their
Spring Sing at 6:30 p.m.)
There will also be items on our FaceBook page that we encourage you to
“like” and “share” with others!
We would once
again like to invite
everyone to be a
part of our email
prayer chain again
this year!
Everyone with a computer has an opportunity to participate and pass on
prayer opportunities to others. We will start with an email through our list
serve on Wednesday in the late afternoon. Every member whom we have
an email for should get an email. The email will include some prayer ideas
and a brief description of the process. We ask that, as time allows in your
day, you take a few moments to say a prayer, adding any of your own re-
quests. Then cut and paste the email to send it on to others. We ask each
person to add their name and location on the email before passing it on.
The email will include instructions that this is about a “thirty-six hour” ac-
tivity. Once Thursday evening rolls around, we will ask the “last person” to
forward the email to the church email address. We hope to have many,
many, many lists come back, with names and places from all over the
world!
For those who do not have a computer or simply wish to come to the
church to pray, as we have done for several years, the sanctuary will be
open from 8:00 a.m. through 6:30 p.m.
Please Participate in our e-mail Pass it on Prayer!
1. 1. Read it.
2. 2. Cut & paste it into a new email.
3. 3. Say a prayer.
4. 4. Pass it on.

Dear parents and friends-
I want to thank everyone who supported our Spaghetti Dinner and
our Used Book Sale! Thank you for all the food and used books
that you donated for our sale and dinner. Thank you to all those who work to
set up the sale, prepare for the dinner and those who worked at the dinner!
Thank you to all those who bought books and attended the dinner! It was a
great success!
I can’t believe we only have 2 months left of school already!
April is the start of our biggest fundraiser of the year. Our silent auction will
begin on April 23 and run through May 4. If you have any items or services
that you would like to donate, please contact Kim Moncrief at 630-476-0765
or myself at 815-756-6669.
In the month of May we will have our bike safety day at school. The children
will be able to bring their own bikes to school and learn how to be safe this
summer while riding their bikes.
On May 4 at 6:30 we will have our annual spring sing. All family and friends
are invited to come and listen to the children sing. We have LOTS of new
items coming in along with many of the favorites people look for each year!
Each class will be working on theme baskets to put into the auction. Parent
participation in this portion of the event is very important! Please take a mo-
ment to check to see what your child’s class is working on!
Our silent auction will come to an end that evening at 7:30. Make sure you
come and get your bids in!
We will be having parent teacher conferences on May 8-12. This is a time for
the parents and teachers to get together to discuss how their child is doing in
school.
We will end our year with our graduation ceremony and family picnic on
May 24 and 25. All family and friends are invited to exciting event.
Here I am at the end of my third year as the preschool director of Little
Lambs Preschool. I want to thank everyone for all of your support and en-
couragement! I have been helped and supported by everyone from our great
parents to the staff and from the congregation. I cannot thank all of you
enough! I am looking forward to another great year.
