RAC Clark: Inside The ACMs A conversation with 52nd ACM Awards Executive Producer RAC Clark: Let’s get right to the elephant: Ratings were down again. We had the insanity of the 50th where everything fell into place,
and that’s a hard standard to hold to. I don’t know what the new normal is for country music awards shows in the spring, but we’re finding it out. And I really don’t know what else to do. We had great music, great partici-pation from our stars – I’m stumped. Can we do something different with marketing, with production? We had stiff competition – base-ball, Walking Dead and WrestleMania – but we always do. At the same time, it was Final Four weekend, which has always been good
to us, and CBS had huge ratings. We’ll do an extensive debrief over the summer and get into all the different factors. The show was well-received in the room and our radio readers gave it high marks last week. I will happily say we were technically flawless. I haven’t heard any complaints and from where I sat, every team hit their marks. Having the Entertainer nominees open was so strong and such a simple concept. Why hasn’t that been done before? We’ve tried, but there’s usually one holdout. You can’t open with, “Here are four of the five Entertainer nominees!” This year, Carrie’s manager Ann Edelblute said, “We’re in. Why don’t you ask everybody else?” She gets producer credit on that one. Talking about following the energy of that, and with Chuck Berry’s untimely passing, we thought it was the right fit to put our hosts in their comfort zone as musicians. Then Joe Walsh was available and we did a two-minute version of “Johnny B. Goode” – verse, chorus, solo. How did it go with Luke and Dierks in their second time together hosting? They did great and put a lot of effort in. We brought in a new writer, Paul Greenberg, and they committed to starting earlier and really fine tuning the script. When we were discussing the mono-

CRS Revisited: Slicing & Dicing One of CRS 2017’s best-received panels mixed original research from Stone Door Media Lab’s Jeff Green with commen-tary from top record and radio execs on the ever-changing factors that go into music decisions. Green’s research identified five reliable early indicators of song acceptance, while the panel offered valuable and at times cautionary perspective. Green started with those five proven predictors: 12 or more Shazams-per-spin in their second chart week, No. 1 Most Added, early Airborne status, 12 or more sales per spin in chart week two, and fast Pandora chart pacing. “Yes there are many exceptions,” says

UPDATE
Universal Music Publishing writer Blair Daly discusses his most influential music: 1. KISS’ Asylum Tour, The Cajundome, Lafayette, LA: It was the first concert I ever attended. My mind was blown. After that show, there was no question about what I was going to do with my life. 2. Eddie Van Halen: I remember so clearly as a kid, sitting in front of the fireplace in my parents’ living room, watching MTV. The “Jump” video came on. As soon as Eddie
shredded that solo, I was done. That next day, my parents ordered me a right-handed harmony acoustic from Sears for $25. I flipped the strings to make it lefty, and the rest is history. 3. Def Leppard’s Hysteria: I grew up in the ‘80s and am a huge fan of rock and hard rock. This band always had great songs. Also, Mutt Lange’s production on this record is incredible. To this day, there aren’t many occasions when I’m writing a song or doing a demo, where I don’t pull out something from that book of tricks. 4. Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite For Destruction: This band and album were game changers for me. They came out of the same Sunset Strip scene as most of the big ‘80s rock bands, but G N’ R did their own thing. They combined great songs with, what was to me, the true spirit of rebellious, badass rock and roll. 5. Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”: I love great pop music. I was an instant fan the first time I heard “I Kissed A Girl.” She’s the real deal. A superstar, onstage and off. And, she knows how to write huge pop hits. I’ve been asked many times, if you could pick one favorite pop song you didn’t write, what would it be. “Teenage Dream” has been that song for me for a good while now. • Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface. I’ve heard bits and pieces. But nothing I’ve connected with to make me want to listen to the record. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Kanye West records. • An album you listened to incessantly: Shinedown’s The Sound Of Madness. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Chris Cornell’s “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart.” His voice is insane! He has it all. The soul, the range and emotion. In my opinion, one of the best singers of my lifetime. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: If I enjoy it, I’ll gladly admit it!

Green. “Some songs don’t score well on any of these indicators ... and still become big.” As for what programmers actually look to, Green’s survey asked reporters to rank 38 factors that may impact their decision making. The top three were artist stature, gut feeling, and tempo and sound. See the full piece here. Following Green’s data presentation, Sony/Nashville EVP/Marketing & New Business John Zarling said he looks at Spotify, Pandora and other key streaming partners. Singles sales through iTunes and video data from YouTube and Vevo are important, too. As is market-specific streaming data. He also stressed the importance of looking for reasons why one platform may be outperforming another. “What’s going on with that pool of listeners that is allowing that particular song to over-index,” he asked. CBS VP/Programming and KMLE/Phoenix PD Tim Richards looks at Shazam, Spotify, video and extraordinary examples of social engagement, but warned attendees to only use mScores over multiple weeks and only on songs with at least 150 spins. Richards also welcomes data from label partners and en-

courages his fellow PDs to do the same without falling to cynicism. “We live in an on-demand society,” he said. “We need to adapt or die.” Zarling noted that the label’s task is to show how each artist is different through their charitable works, touring and imaging. “There are so many artists that frankly all of us on the label side are challenged with finding that differentiating point,” he said. Zarling also said an opportunity may exist for a third party to provide data to radio pros, who may be skeptical of what labels supply. Richards emphasized the importance of treating labels as partners, not only in terms of the music and data they provide, but also for the acts they bring to the table for station events. Green offered advice on using Shazam charts for tracking growth and trends, and said Wikipedia views and data from Next Big Sound are free and useful (click here). See the entire presentation here.

logue, they hit on the idea of what people do when they’re in Vegas. We talked about a video package, but those can fall a little flat and the pictures were more their vibe. So was Kellie Pickler sort of an auxiliary host? T-Mobile sponsored the New Artist categories and wanted one person to present all three of those awards. She was their pick and we’ve had great experiences working with her, so that worked out well. The “don’t change the channel” performances across the tops of the hours were Keith Urban and Carrie Un-derwood and the Tim McGraw and Faith Hill duet, right? What more could you want? And we followed up Keith and
Carrie with Lady Antebellum, and followed Tim and Faith in the 10pm hour with a string of collaborations. The challenge was transitioning from “Blue Ain’t Your Color” into “The Fighter.” What you may-be didn’t see in the house was the first was a black-and-white performance with blue highlights, then into big, bright, vibrant colors for “Fighter.” We talked to both camps about how to make that work for a seven minute block of music.
I went to Nashville in January, which is when I usually go for meetings with labels, managers and publicists. [UMG/Nashville’s] Mike Dungan and Cindy Mabe made me hip to “You Look Good.” I’m a horn freak and love to have them on the show as we did last year with Little Big Town and Trombone Shorty. In discussions with the label and their manager Daniel Miller, the idea was to get Chicago or Tower of Power, which eventually became the march-ing band. Then it was Dave Haywood’s idea to include a little bit of the hook of Bill Withers’ “Use Me.” Ultimately it was a very collaborative process taking the germ of an idea and blowing it up. During rehearsal I stood on stage so I could really be blown away by all those horns. As much as the early part of the show blasted out familiar hits, the last hour did seem to be the new music segment of the night. We knew Tim and Faith would be a big moment across the 10pm hour no matter what the music was. The fact that the song
hit so hard so early only confirmed that people would really want to see that. Then, with Thomas Rhett and Maren Morris, Cole Swindell and Dierks, it became our collaboration hour. Before I’d even heard Reba’s album I wanted to find a way to involve the Contemporary Christian audience and broaden the tent. Pairing her with Lauren Daigle was something she was very open to. How did the Backstreet Boys and FGL performance come together? I worked with Backstreet Boys on Miss USA last June and saw 30-40-year-old women go crazy. When I heard about “God, Your Mama, And Me,” I said we’ve got to do this and blend in one of their songs, too. BK, Tyler and the guys em-braced it, but when they first rehearsed it, there wasn’t that moment when BK and Ty-ler joined in the choreography. I said, “You might want to try that.” They went for it and that moment was priceless. Our director Glenn Weiss got the shot of Tim McGraw, which has already become this classic meme. Ideally, you end the show on that performance, but with FGL up for Entertainer, I didn’t feel it was appropriate. I don’t like to do that to folks. Working in radio hosts Bobby Bones, Ty Bentli and Storme Warren hit another level when WYCD/Detroit’s Rob Stone was able to recognize the late Linda Lee. How did those moments happen? We want radio involved. They’re our partners in getting the word out, and in discussion with CBS and Dick Clark Productions, we decided to try to get one from each of the major groups. We also had voiceovers from the ACM personality winners going into every commercial. We initially had Rob and Linda as one of those bumpers, but had to re-record it once he got to town and we heard the bad news. Having him walk out to present developed over the weekend. And how was the new building, T-Mobile Arena? I’d done Miss USA there and visited DCP when they were doing the Billboard awards. I like it, only because it’s a sports arena and those long zipper screens that wrap around the arena add something visually. It feels more compact and the seats are closer to the stage, which makes it much louder and more raucous in the house. It has its physical challenges, but we had a new co-execu-tive producer Baz Halpin, who has designed shows for Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and P!nk. He helped design a huge look without taxing the crew too much. We were the heaviest show that’s ever been in the building. We went right up to the line. –Chuck Aly CAC
